Also 2 majors in 5 years. Woah. For the record, of all golfers who have won 2 professional majors(34), more than 75% of them won them in a 5 year period. Only 8 didn't.

Of course I'm in the camp that doesn't give a whole lot of weight to age, but rather to experience, and Rory has plenty of that with nowhere near GOATish results.
Well if success as a golfer was the same at 23 as it is at 33 then you might have a leg to stand on with the bolded sentiment. Otherwise you are again buffing up against human development and evolution. You might want to think that though.

And if predicting someone's golfing future was best calculated by extrapolating the best 15 month stretch of their career and ignoring all other evidence you may have a leg to stand on.

Golfers in the last 50 years with 2+ majors by 30: (to the best of my knowledge, the list is complete)

Jack Nicklaus
Tony Jacklin
Johnny Miller
Tom Watson
Seve Ballesteros
John Daly
Ernie Els
Tiger Woods
Rory McIlroy

Other than Daly, all members of the Hall of Fame. Not saying McIlroy is a lock for the HOF, just pointing out the company he's currently in.

Good post BO

If you want to project Rory's future success, compare his current results to past players of the same age.

It's not at all unreasonable that a potential legend would get much better between their age 20 (2009) and 23 (2012) seasons.

You are talking like his 2009 season has equal weight to his 2012 season. The only inflection point so far in his career has occured between 2012 and 2013, in which it has ticked downward.

What does this tell us about the future? Almost nothing.

Should I assume it was an honest mistake you failed to mention Jack also had 14 professional majors by age 37.75?

How could I resist?

The best case scenario is that he got "bored" after winning twice in easy fashion. Worst case scenario is that he can't get it up to play for a million grand prize when Nike is paying him $50 Million a year just to swing clubs. Somewhere in between are various other possibilities.

But for 15 months he played like a guy who would win 8+ majors, and for 12 months now he's played like a guy who will win 0 or 1. I'd still say his O/U is somewhere between the two. Natural talent trumps everything so I wouldn't start betting against him to be elite again someday soon.

Rory needs a private session with Tiger to really learn how to please the ladies. Once the kid gets that off his mind he'll start playing like he used to.

2009, 2010, and 2013 all look very similar, with 2011 seeing an uptick. 2012 is the anomaly in his career so far. So I'm not giving equal weight to 2009 and 2013, I'm weighing the whole of his career (four years) against a single one year stretch.

I can honestly say I didn't realize Hal had a major let alone 2.

Ok, just Wiki'd Hal and I see the PGA in 1983 and that's all.

I wish I could have "an anomaly" like Rory had in 2012.

I think calling 2011 "an uptick" is wayyy underselling Rory. He shot up the OWGR and almost won 2 majors. I mean he was winning The Masters by 4 shots with 9 to play in his 3rd Masters. Then he totally choked and people on this forum were wondering how long it would take him to bounce back, if ever. Next major (US Open) he played a historically great tournament and killed the field.

Just goes to show you that even BO subconsciously knows that the US Amateur is not a major!
