I don't get why they have the points system at all - except that it gives a chance to advertise the 'fed ex points' all through the season even though everyone knows they're completely meaningless until the last few tournaments.

Just have a fed-ex playoff where the tournaments are qualifiers for the next one (top x of the first one reaches the second, top y of the second reaches the third etc) and then have the results of the last one count for the total as well. I guess they could still have a seperate points system to decide who gets into the first of the play-offs.

Pretty solid analogy between this and the 16-0 NE Patriots. Makes it a true playoff, I guess.

The alternate scenario is that the someone who doesn't win a playoff event wins the Fedex Cup based off of early-season success. This would be horrible as well.

There's no way to make it perfect or even all that good, but at least we get an extra three season ending tournaments with loaded fields.

Fedex Cup isn't all that different than the NHL Playoffs, which are preceded by a season-long fight to gain home ice advantage, which is rendered meaningless as soon as the playoffs begin, leading to constant instances where low-seeded teams win or make the Finals. I mean, you've had plenty of seasons where teams seeded 4 or worse have gone all the way.

The system they have in place isnt that bad right now. The points just need to be scaled back a bit so someone who has played well enough that deserves to win actually wins it, not someone who luckboxes the last tournament

According to the scoreboard at pgatour.com, 6 players who were out of the top 100 coming into this week's event will finish in the top 100 and advance to next week's event. Granted, it depends on how well those 6 do this weekend.
