I've watched a good bit of the Euro Tour on the weekends on Golf Channel this year. If the purses are about or even 80% that of the PGA Tour events, judging by the crowds it would be hard to believe that Euro Tour is making any money overall. Also I have no idea of how the Euro Tour is structured finically speaking. However, this said the great thing about the Euro Tour is the fact that it takes golf to some very out of the way locations and exposes golf to much more varied type of audience.

it's more about TV exposure, the sponsors aren't selling ads for the people who show up on the grounds

Exposure where? Europe? US? Or local to where the events are being played?
So why is there a large charge to people to go and watch a Golf Tournament?
Who keeps this pot of money? The course? The sponsors? The Tour? if so what is the break even point? I don't have any of the answers to these questions that is why I am asking.

golf tours don't make money by selling tickets to the golf tournaments. they make money by selling ads. that's all i tried to say.

At the end of the article, shouldn't they be comparing the 100th on the euro tour to the 100th place on the web.com tour? Apples to apples please.

While I agree with the point they don't make money selling tickets to the general public, they make a ton of money selling corporate suites. Not all sky box buying companies are buying ads so many of those boxes are additional revenue sources.

Let's do a little math taking an hypothetical PGA tour event. Using $40 a day for a ticket to get into the event and an average of 30,000 per day attendance you are talking about just ticket sales of $1,200,000 per day or for the 4 day event $4,800,000! Don't think that is chump change and judging by watching the Euro Tour I would guess the crowds are more in the 5,000 to 10,000 range with some being a lot less than that. I'm just wondering what all that money get used for and if it just getting used to cover expenses then how does the Euro Tour cover their expenses?

The Greenbrier Classic, I use this because its the closest PGA Tour event to me. Had for different price packages.
The cheapest was the Grounds Badge - $159 for the week.
Next level was the Benefactor Badge - $285 also for the week, let you have a little more access.
3rd level was the Alumni Badge - $495 again with a little more fluff and stuff.
Then the Top level the Clubhouse Badge - $5,000 giving you basically total access to the Resort.

So you can see my numbers, in the hypothetical, was based upon the low end not even the mid range and certainly not the upper range. I agree with ship---this that they wouldn't be making a money selling the tickets to the general public, so that must be covering some kind of expenses.

I am not sure of the actual numbers, but if attendance is 30,000 I'd like to know how many of those are actual public that pay some sort of face value for a ticket. I know I am a country club guy, but I don't know a single person who has ever actually bought a ticket to an event. I would bet at a minimum half the crowd is there on a corporate badge or tickets from the Pro-Ams or some other source than just buying a ticket at the box office.

So while yes, $1.2M is not chump change, most of that revenue is already made whether you have 10k spectators or 100k via the corporate box sales.

Nah, I think $25 for a day badge is reasonable.

ship--this I don't doubt what you are saying at all, and finding actual numbers about who is public and who is corporate is very hard to find, and the 30,000 was low balling the attendance figures reported. I know many people that bought the tickets to the Greenbrier Classic gets you into the concerts at night. However your model of sales may explain how the Euro Tour covers their expenses and why the crowds are so much smaller. Thanks! for the info!

I'm pretty sure every PGA tournament since the US Open they've said that the greens were "major" or "US Open" speed. Maybe not the PGA or wherever that was Tiger was complaining about how slow they were.

Patrick Reed is a pretty incredible story. 23 years old and has his bag on the bag and is seemingly in whatever tourney he's playing in almost every time.

If Spieth could take DL3's career (20 wins, 1 major, 2 Players, lifetime exemption) right now, would he?

*wife on his bag

And yes, he would be foolish not to take that career line

I think it's an interesting question. His ceiling is higher than that career, but getting that lifetime exemption would be sick. But you only get 1 major with it.

Also it's going to be harder and harder to win 20 tournaments in the future.

In no possible way would he take it. Thats essentially saying he is only good for 1 win a year and may luckbox a major one year. The kid has been around the Tour since age 16 and already has won prior to turning 20 and seems to be on the top half of the leaderboard much more often than not.
