Nobody really asserted this, and nobody really understated the importance of them, it was more of an objective look at strength of field, difficulty of courses, how bad players can win majors but won't be winning multiple total Tour events, etc.
Again, history and media love affair with giving them attention are what makes them the most special tournaments. They do not have the best fields, period. This isn't an opinion, it's mathematical fact.
