Even post technology, 7800 yards is pretty stupid long. I mean aside from Whistling Straits, is there even a course out there that long that isn't a gimmick? 600 yard par 5s without helping wind aren't exactly easily reachable in 2.

I highly doubt they'll play Erin Hills from 7800 yards for the US Open.

Would be pretty awesome though if they do imo. I would love to see a few holes where guys have to go Driver - 4I through 6I into a par 4.

The full yardage number is often irrelevant because a) the effective playing length due to fast conditions etc is shorter and b) some of the tees are moved up each day usually

I've played a Nicklaus designed course in Montana that is 7700 from the tips with a 76 rating. It plays a bit shorter due to elevation but it's long as ****. There was a US Open qualifier there last year when I was on vacation that I thought about doing. But nah. I think -2 was medalist.

My point wasn't that the USGA is opposed to par 72's for the sake of it. More that almost all courses designed prior to 2000 at a minimum are just not big enough for modern golf. So absolutely the USGA could play a course designed in 2006 as a par 72 because the par 5's and 4's make sense as originally designed. You just are not going to find a course designed prior to 2000 that doesn't have at least one terrible par 5 that needs to be shortened and played as a good par 4.

I would expect the Open at Erin Hills to play in the 7400 yard range each day. That is said with absolutely no knowledge of how fast the course plays or any other thought.

I must be misremembering but I thought they reverted Pebble Beach in 2010 to a Par 72 by having the second hole play as a par-5 again. Evidently not. Scoring to par was plenty hard whatever it was.

Chambers Bay - there must be a par-5 that they'll shorten to make it a 71 but can't remember. One unique thing that I recall about the US Amateur there is they played the 18th at very different yardages over the course of the week - 100+ yards difference iirc - and described it as a par-4 one day and a par-5 the next. But that's completely arbitrary not to mention even more meaningless in the context of match play anyway.

Anyone going to the event in Memphis this weekend?

Also, U.S. Open and Tour courses in general play so fast that the yardage you are looking at is almost irrelevant. It plays nothing like what your home course at home plays like I bet for some of you the greens at an open run as fast as your courses greens.

You're talking about the Old Works, great golf course for Montana. What did you think about the slag in the bunkers?

I love the course. One of my favorites. I try to play it every time I'm out there for vacation.

The slag is awesome. It's the exact opposite of what I thought it'd be. Really fine and light. Plus it makes the course look baller as ****.

It's a byproduct of ore. The course is basically built on an old mining area.

Here's a pic I took last spring

Wow. That looks beyond sick!

Do they still play like sand bunkers? Obviously it looks super hard...

EDIT: i was a little slow in posting the above. now it's 2 strokes and both he and 2nd place guy are finished for round 2.
