Well, to the last part I was part of an online golf community for Links LS around that time and specifically remember bitching in the forums there after the 1997 US Open at Congressional how annoying the "get in the hole" people were, so if it wasn't an issue at The Players in 1996 it was right around the corner.
Final pairing that day was Tommy Tolles and David Duval. This was a good three years before Duval had that huge breakout stretch, was surprised to even see him contending then.
