If I'm the Captain, Spieth is on my team for a few reasons. He's obviously in great form. There's a pretty good chance he's going to qualify for the Ryder Cup next year, and it'd be nice to get him some experience on the International stage. And regardless of if he's on the team or not, the US will be a huge favorite. The one thing that might sway me would be if Tiger lobbies hard for Stricker, because I think I want DJ on my team too.
Yeah, I like the idea of Spieth as a pick for reasons you state, hope he goes with him. Would rather see that than DJ. Stricker presumably has an inside track on another pick - is generally playing well in his limited schedule, is currently in the 11th spot, and this could well be his last chance at international competition.

The Int'l team used to be absolutely stacked and stronger on paper than the US team, but for whatever reason still couldn't win. Not going to look up OWGR but they had peak Vijay, Ernie, Goosen back during that period when they were anointed three of the "big five" at the time when Goosen was winning US Opens, Vijay was world #1, and Ernie was hanging around and taking the occasional major. There was also K.J. Choi at his best, Adam Scott, Tim Clark, Allenby and Appleby. But then they'd lose anyway.
I think any difference in competitiveness has less to do with that side though, more like the US team is probably a lot more talented than it was at that time. No randos like Brett Wetterich or Jeff Overton taking RC or PC spots, the qualifiers are legit and there is a much deeper pool to choose captain's picks from.
