Looks like Mahan pulled out about 8.5 months late....

All DJ's wins and close losses seem to be tainted in some way. He's got multiple 54-hole wins, and he's now leading a tournament in which the leader was 2 shots ahead and still had 18 more holes to play. He might win this one. Then there's the major that he lost because of that "bunker". Crazy.

He's gonna have a cool story to tell his kid when he or she is older. Hunter's wife: "I remember the day I went into labor. I texted your dad. He was up in Canada for work. He was winning a PGA Tour event by 2 strokes and was getting ready for his third round in the rain. I texted him and he left and came home and got here just in time to see you and that's why you're named "RBC Canadian Mahan".

Hunter could have started a nice college fund for the little one with that prize money if he stayed. Wonder why he even played if they knew she was that close to popping one out. Seems like if you're that dedicated to your wife and family you wouldn't even play this weekend.

She was a month early.

In other news John Merrick is still being treated like a leper all these years later by having to play in the last group ALONE.

Seems like he's going to be able to manage the college fund anyway.

Should be a great finish tomorrow, nice leaderboard.

Hunter Mahan is rich. Not sure if you know that or not. And the baby wasn't due until the week of the PGA Championship.

Is there anything more exciting in all of golf than when Matt Kuchar is near the top of the leaderboard going into Sunday?

Nice to be in a position to walk away from about $600K EV with no worries and have a story to tell your kid.

Back in Jack's day he didn't have pussies that WD'd, especially in first place! No wonder Tiger has all those wins going against competition like that.

lolaughable that people are giving props to Mahan for leaving for the birth of his first child. He is rich as can be and sponsorships for days. I'd be much more interested if it was a player leading who never had a top 10 and was fighting for his card. It's easy to make the right choices when there are no consequences

Tour wins are what these players are judged on. It's never easy to give away an opportunity to get one, especially in such a parity-heavy era where it only takes maybe 12 or 15 wins to have a sick career.

It's also a ton of money when you factor in that a high finish increases your FedEx Cup equity a lot. And just because he already has millions doesn't mean he doesn't want more.

And he thinks the birth of his first child is more important than all of that. Good for him. Hunter will have plenty more opportunities.

but if the player was fighting to stay on tour the right choice would be to stay and play so he can continue to support his family.

Yeah, I asked my wife this question and she said she wouldn't let me come home if it was this type of situation.

Its nice that Hunter is in a spot where he can hop on a jet and have no worries about a golf tournament he was leading after 36 holes. Someone trying to keep their card is a whole different story though.

Meh, that EV calculation seems a little high all things considered (his recent form when going into the weekend around the lead).
