The greens thing is interesting and I knew it was an issue when I saw it discussed on TGC about this time last week. They aren't talking about the putting surfaces at a random tour stop a week out unless it's news. Funny thing though, these conditions are so much better than they were years ago that they'll probably still be a lot smoother than pros putted on in the 70s and prior.

Separate post, separate topic: I saw that TGC is running "golf's greatest rounds", which is something I really really like and hope to see more of. Last night it was the 1996 Players. Set it to record before I went to bed, the leaderboard was a time capsule of interesting names past and present. You had some guys that are still relevant or were until recently at the top like Vijay, Lumpy Herron, and Couples, and some gummers like Jay Haas and Tom Watson still going strong.

Broadcast was as still is put on by NBC, with a notably less vocal Johnny Miller in the booth. Haven't yet had time to sort out the others except for Roger Maltbie, and I think Don Criqui may have been Miller's sidekick.

Dick Enberg and Dave Marr (not Don Criqui imo)

The 1996 players was an entertaining watch for sure! One of the last tournament in the pre-Tiger era where Fuzzy was still relevant and cool as ****. Where Phil was still playing without a cap/visor and hitting it stiff using the Yonex irons with graphite shafts. The Great Big Bertha and the Burner bubble were ruling the world. David Duval had yet to win on tour and was perceived as somewhat weak mentally coming down the stretch...2 years later he would be the world number 1 haha.

Most importantly, I didn't hear a single ''Get in the hole'' from the tee box or even from around the greens...

I watched that last night. Was weird seeing Phil without his KPMG hat on.

Even when Fred Couples is cruising to victory he looks like an *******.

Nice post.

Great Big Bertha really did rule the world. Loved that driver

I met this dude at Pebble Beach during the open and we were hanging on some par 4 on the back watching the tee shots. When Tiger or some other big name came up he asked me to yell "Get in the hole!!" with him. I told him no chance and he seemed pretty disappointed. It was my first encounter with Get-in-the-hole guy.

When playing with friends who are all pretty good, if one of them hits a major hook off the tee that is obviously not going to turn out well, I like to yell "Hook ball hook....draw a little." It always goes over well and gets some laughs because it's the exact opposite of what most peoople say. Most people would say "fade ball" or something similar and would only say that when it was going to be a close call as to whether the ball was in play or not. So if it's clearly out and hooking drastically, there is just something funny about telling it to hook...comedy on multiple levels.

I always crack up when my friends do it to me. But I like dry humor, so maybe that's why I find it so funny.

Just came back from Quail Hollow, honestly I think it's been overstated in general. Don't get me wrong there are some bad greens, 13 and 9 come to mind, they look worse than a muni (saw Steve Marino sink a chip across the green on 13 though, he seems to not care). Then there are a few that are a bit bumpy but honestly not terrible. Rest are pretty decent, they are rolling well. For all the talk about the re-sodding, I thought 8 honestly rolled the best out of all the greens I saw today. Saw Bud Cauley knock a 20 footer in on 8 that was nothing but pure, roll was absolutely beautiful. You can see the seems from the re-sodding it's extremely apparent, but it still rolls well. Didn't check out the 10th green to get an idea of how the re-sodding went on that.

Granted I am an 18 hdcper not used to tournament style greens, so of course my assessments can be off. One thing I will say was consistent throughout my time there was players leaving it short; it was rare to see someone putting past the hole.

Also pretty surreal moment, was walking on 18 with my dad and we see Faldo going by us with his cart. It was weird because I looked at him for a good 5 seconds before I was like "**** is that Faldo?", he looked like a tournament official. Looked kinda like he was in a pissy mood, didn't say anything to anyone or even acknowledge them, can't really blame him I guess.

Let's go Kokrak. 2 under through 8 w/ a clean card. How about parring in w/ birdies on the 5 Pars to get to 4?

I think everything in that commercial was CGI'd though. I know the "ball" rolling into the hole certainly was.
