Feel good for him. He has been really solid all year and seems to be on the leaderboard every saturday so to see him close it out is great.

Billy Horschel's path - I'd say he earned his little celebration (most of this is from Wiki, but it's quite the circuitous route for being so young):

- He's 26 years old. In 2006, he shot a 60(!) in the first round of the US Amateur - the lowest round at any USGA event ever. He followed it up with a 78 the next day, but was still medalist.

- He walked on to his college golf team at Florida. 4-time All-American, including 3 first-team honors. SEC player of the year in 2007 and 2009.

- Got his card at Q School in 2009. Only played 4 events in 2010 because of an injury.

- Made it through Q School again in 2010. Didn't make his first cut until his 11th Tour event, and finished 140th on the 2011 money list (conditional status for 2012.)

- He did get a 3rd place finish in an opposite-field event (from the British) last year, but again couldn't crack the Top-125. 148th on the money list. Conditional again.

- BUT, he made it through Q School again(!) last year. He's finally healthy this season, and then this last month happened.

-----------

A couple months ago, I heard Horschel give a random interview to John Maginnes on his XM show - Horschel seemed smart, mature for his age, and likeable. I became a fan that day.

-----------

Also, just as an FYI, I watch as much golf as anyone, and am going to try to be more active in this thread - seems like a good knowledgeable crowd, and it's tough to find good discussion about random PGA Tour events. Been reading for a while.

What a round by both horschel and points. Great golf today, especially with all the start/stops.

Not a fan of either player but played with Horschel in a Western Am a while back and I can tell you the guy has some serious talent and could possibly win majors if he continues to work as hard as he does.

Also and FYI Horschel is fairly nice but is pretty arrogant.

Well then his 6 boisterous fist pumps after his last putt sorta make sense. That's what I'd expect an arrogant douche to do.

I've seen plenty of guys win for the first time and don't remember such reaction.

Didn't bother to post yesterday although I watched. Funny how quickly it went from literally 20 guys with a chance to win to just two. Points has won, Stanley has won, Horschel hadn't, so he was the guy I wanted to win. Remarkable finish by him considering the untimely weather delay.

Only other thing worth noting is that they got smart and put the flag on 18 yesterday where the water could have been a factor. In past years it's been clear in the back-left of the green away from the hazard. Considering this event seems to have a lot of playoffs that's been a suboptimal location for drama.

EDIT: UMTerp, thanks for the overview w/r/t Horschel.

to add to the Horschel personality dissection ... here is what my friend says who travels the Tour working for ShotLink:

Yea.. he has been impressive. He's a little bit if a strange dude.. the girl I work with knows him well. He's different.

Well since the McIlroy story is out. I guess I will tell my Billy Horschel story that is somewhat along the lines of the McIlroy situation but albeit different.

Anyways so those of you not familiar with the Western Am it's 72 holes of stroke play and then cuts to the low 16 and goes to match play. I had played well that week and was in around T12 going into the final round of stroke play qualifying and I get paired with Horschel and some older mid-am player that had just got his status back. Anyways we get on the first tee and, lol, if the mid-am didn't tee it up with a brush tee. Needless to say Horschel and I made eye contact and gave eachother a smirk. I mean it was highly unusual that someone at that level is using a brush tee because it's just a gimmick. Anyways, fast foward to the 16th hole and all of us are in a pretty dead heat for being in the top 16 and moving on to the match play portion. If any of you have played Point O' Woods you would know how tough that tee shot is, lets just say you got to fire a laser beam down. The mid-am is first to play and we have a wait on the group in front of us. As the group in front starts to clear the mid-am tees it up and is about to start his pre-shot routine when Horschel says, "Dude, why the hell do you use those brush tees?". Literally 45 secs before he is about to tee it up on a tee shot that is a 10 on the difficulty level. My caddie and I were both like WTF is this guy doing so inappropriate and just horrible ettiquette. Might not mean that much to people who don't play tournament golf but it was extremely inappropriate.

That said to this day I'm not sure if he did it on purpose or if just wasn't aware he was doing something wrong. He was always polite to me and interested in how I played etc. whenever we saw eachother after that so I think it was unintentional but the Rory thing and other stories make me think otherwise.

That story is great. No clue whether it was intentional or not but reminds me of Joey Snyder III, currently a minitour/fringe Tour player I grew up playing with. He was known for not being afraid to tell you when you were in trouble, e.g. hit a shot slightly offline, instead of saying "that may have caught part of the fairway" or "you should have a shot from there", or simply nothing at all, he would invariably say something like "you're dead, you'll have to punch out" or a similarly discouraging sentiment. I really don't think he was doing it to be a dick either, it was just sort of golfing Tourette's.

I think I do that a lot on the course too, is that really something that people hate? Saying a shot "might be alright" when it's clearly headed for trouble is a million times worse IMO.

I always root and verbalize for a positive outcome to an off line shot. I think its just common courtesy. If the shot is obviously in jail I just say nothing.

Yeah I don't think it's a huge sin or anything, but it seems normal to throw out a best-case scenario even if it's a longshot. Snyder stood out because he tended to throw out worst-case scenarios, which in retrospect is kind of hilarious.
