Mods please delete if against rules...

I just posted a blog about the similarities between golf and poker. Not sure if any of you are interested in reading it but I thought I'd share.

the Callaway sale for Kingdom59 doesn't even beat the prices on new equipment that can be found on ebay. I'll check with some of the other manufacturer's equipment when they release another batch or two of goods.

Hell, if he's just selling merchandise he has to order and it doesn't ship for a week or so, what's stopping him from just taking orders for things, buying them on ebay for cheaper and then shipping them for profit? lol

Yeah I think about that stuff a lot too - one thing I'd add is how important tilt/emotional control are in both games. I'd be really surprised to know about a high level non-tilty poker player who is a tilty golfer, or vice versa

The only time I've ever tilted in either game was when something outside of golf/poker was weighing heavily on me.

Day 1 of an Invitational at one of the local clubs here tomorrow. Should be interesting. I had been hitting it really, really well leading up but then hit it bad today in a practice round.

Golf course is completely opposite of what I normally play too. I am used to a mid length Dye (PB) course with huge undulating greens. The place tomorrow is more like an old Ross. 6000 yards, greens are tiny. And they are old 419 Bermuda so they suck and are super grainy.

It will probably take some career golf to have a chance to win it. I would guess 5-6 under will be the number, and I have never put that up in consecutive rounds. But if the driver and wedges cooperate, and the putter just hangs in there, you never know.

I hit it at 11 tomorrow.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

How do you win a golf tournament? One shot at a time.

How do you hit Carpal \'Tunnel? One post at a time!

I mentioned that in the blog -- related to allowing emotions to lead to -EV and compound mistakes.

Supposed to be a beautiful weekend in Buffalo. I'm going to try to get in as much golf as possible (it helps that the Bills are blacked out).

Yep, going to be a good weekend in Toronto too. After last weekend's cold spell, I was starting to think my season was over. However, I am playing a minimum of 54 holes this weekend. Golf till I drop.

One of my favorite things in golf is ...

During a lesson, when your pro says something that clicks in your brain and you go back to striping the ball. It has been so long since I have hit the ball in the center of the club face and the ball hasn't gone left, put on it's blinker to signal left, then went further left.

I am actually excited about golf again. I haven't felt that way in almost 2 years...

I love that too.. I've taken lessons from multiple pros in the last years, but there's one guy who I really click with. I've taken about 20+ lessons with him.

I'll go him with some sob story; "i'm shanking the ball again.. i'm hitting huge slices.. it's a nightmare.. i'm *this* close to quitting for the year, etc etc". So we go back to the fundamentals and work from there and by the end of the session i'm putting on a clinic for him.

I just wish I could make that happen on the course.

Was anyone watching the Dunhill Links today? McIlroy played a chip at the 17th at St. Andrews that had me simply mesmerised. Amazing shot.

Amirite?

Quick noob question: What do the Handicap numbers on a score card mean? The ones that go from 1-18... are they a simple ranking of hole difficulty?

Yep, stroke index 1 is the hardest hole 18 the easiest

HiC isn't exactly right. The holes are ranked on the difference between a scratch and bogey golfers expected scores. So the #1 HC hole is where the biggest difference is, and the 18th is where you would expect the scratch and bogey golfer to score the closest.

Any of you guys ever give someone a tip and see immediate results?

I'm not a huge tip giver (I don't have much to offer and I'm not a great golfer by any stretch) but I was golfing Friday with a guy who kept screwing up his fairway woods. He didn't top them, but they were all worm burners. Anyway, I just told him that he was trying too hard to get the ball in the air and that he should just concentrate on hitting the bottom of the ball and let the club do the work.

His next 3 wood was a beauty. 180 yards, nice and high, right own the middle.

He was a great guy and thanked me profusely for the next 5 holes. Anyone else?

About the only thing I'll tell people without being asked is if they are hitting the ball where they aim it but for whatever reason they don't realize they are aiming 30+ yards off target.

Yeah, I rarely give tips. That's basically my go to tip though. I've given it before and seen immediate results so I'm willing to offer it up.

When I'm playing a casual round with someone, I will usually mentally critique their swing -- spotting flaws and areas of improvement.

I don't speak up unless I'm asked though since I believe that providing unwanted assistance and input is the best way to lose company.

Mistakes are often the same though (Feet/Hips/Shoulders squaring up, ball position, etc).

It is a cool feeling when someone asks, you deliver, and the results immediately surface.
