I've never thought about not turning a club in no matter the stick. It's so annoying to lose a club.

I have turned in every club and headcover I've ever come across, but I still think people suck...maybe I'm a cynic.

I was playing on a little 9-holer in the sprawling metropolis of Tres Pinos about 10-12 years ago, and got paired up with a couple of guys, one of whom rolled in a nice putt on the first hole. The putter he was using had a terrific sound, which I mentioned, and he showed it to me.

It was this really old Ping Anser.

Engraved on the sole was, "Property Of The Pebble Beach Golf Company".

Maybe he purchased it from them?

I'd have to agree with this. Where else do people leave hundreds of dollars worth of stuff sitting around with no security cameras or watchful eyes around? When I started playing golf, I was really surprised by that.

I think older people are more inclined to return clubs.

From what I've seen with younger golfers (College --> younger) is that they seem to view finding a club as a 'finder's keepers' mentality. It is likely just a lack of maturity, but I agree it's annoying.

Fortunately I have never left a club, largely due to me walking 99% of my rounds.

If you find a club and don't turn it in it's the exact same thing as just taking it out of somebody's bag at the bag drop. Stolen, no exceptions.

This is my feeling as well. I would never feel right about it if I was using some club I found on a course. Turning it in is the only play.

I go out to the range to hit balls b/c it's probably the prettiest day all year in BigD. Head out to the far left of the range so there's no one with in 30 yards of me (place probably has 50 spots) and I'm just chillin hittin eggs and then all of a sudden two separate couples show up and they're the boyfriend teaching gf type except the bf couldn't break 100 and they're both loud and flirty and all that crap. Such a nice night too, **** like that reminded my why I didn't enjoy working at a private club, could never actually get any privacy when I was practicing/playing.

The chicks were good looking too, I made sure to impress them by hitting driver for 20 minutes while their bf's looked all jealous of my ****.

I had a situation a while back on a public course where the first tee got backed up three groups because of some idiot trying to teach his girlfriend how to golf for the first time. So tilting, but at least she quit after a few holes.

Do i win?

My trip to play golf includes getting up at 5.30 in the morning, driving to get the ferry, half hour ferry ride to clear customs, back on the same ferry, taxi to course and normally straight on to the first tee.

So you get there and see that it is pretty packed out there. The group in front is just waiting for them to clear the first fairway so you drive down to wait for them. The first cart pulls up behind and then another zooms in front of you to tee off on a packed course as a two ball with her mum

now ive seen her play before and she does ok and im certainly in favour of anyone playing golf as i think its the best sport out there but do you not think why on earth did i get out of bed for this.

As an addendum they got put in the group behind us with the aforementioned 4 ball in front of us and their was clear distance between us and them behind for three quarters of the round

Quick question for you guys.

So Westhoff and I hit up Heritage Range north of Dallas today. Really nice course. We tee off at 2:24 and receive the "super twilight" fee. We paid for a cart.

We play as a twosome, and don't see other golfers a single time and finish pretty quickly. We go into the pro shop to tell them we're going to keep going and they tell us that they have a "re-play fee" of 20$ + tax.

I've never had anyone charge me to keep going. I brought my wallet in with me, thinking they may charge us a 9 hole cart fee, but the idea of charging for more golf seems really lame to me. Isn't the whole point of a "twilight" fee for the golfer to be able to play until it becomes too dark? Otherwise, it's just an 18 hole fee.

Comments?

yea that would irk me a bit i suppose. it doesn't appear to be a genuine replay since i'm guessing that it would be a bit of a stretch to play the entire last round...how about a super twilight replay rate compromise?

Twilight fees are reduced rates because the golf course does not guarantee that you will complete the 18 hole round. It's "Up to 18 holes". Anything before twilight rates, you really should be finishing 18 holes no matter how slow the course is playing. If it was as empty as you say it was, you guys could've been the only ones out there.

Let me say this though. If I was the pro and my staff would be there until after dark anyway with whatever other golfers were on the course, I'd let you guys keep going at no charge (or just tell you to make sure you tip the bag drop/cart guys when you come in).

I definitely agree with Reid that if I ran the place, of course you could keep going, but at the same time the way you wrote your post ZBT it sort of irks me that you "told them" you were going to keep playing.

Had a similar situation yesterday we started at 2 pm on a completely empty course (monday afternoon + long drive anyway), we get done around 5:30, come in to get some drinks, and I ask the pro "is it ok if we play a few more holes" and he sort of looked hesitant but then said no problem. Not entirely sure what the hesitation was but I would have been annoyed if he said no, I mean the place has to be losing a ton of money (I've been there twice and its been completely dead both times, probably seen 6 other golfers on the entire course those two weekday afternoons), they need some good word of mouth I'm sure.

A friend of mine won an auction for a foursome at Eagle's Nest, one of the country's top golf courses. We're playing there this Saturday and I'm pretty stoked. It's normally 185/round but it's costing us about 75$. I played it once and was absolutely blown away.

I was looking around the page for a link to their directions/address to see where this was and I saw that they have a Heliport. Holy **** lol.

hahah yah. They are one of the few public courses that are actually situated in Toronto, most of them are outside of the city limits. The piece of land they built the course on is in a really prime spot in the city and apparently their taxes are out of this world.
Most consider it to be one of Doug Carrick's greatest pieces of work and apparently he feels the same way.
Unfortunately, because of where it is and the price they charge, it gets a lot of corporate golf play. Hence the heliport. I guess douchebags with lots of money don't have the time to drive to golf courses anymore.

Golf courses in general are teetering on the edge of profitability.

Replay rates exist, I've worked at a course that had em. The actual cost to a course of you playing another 9 is virtually nil as long as there are other golfers who will finish after you. But if you end up being the last cart in and force 4-5 people to stay an extra 30 minutes then you've clearly cost the course money labor-wise and there are also minor depreciation/energy/etc... costs that could add up over time.

Like everyone who worked in the business my first real job was as a cart attendant and the worst people ever were those who played until it was pitch black and just left the cart and scampered off. If you're the last cart in and roll up and 2-3 cart guys and an assistant pro are waiting on you it's good form to tip something if you're at a private club. Whether that's leaving 3-4 beers in your cart or throwing everyone a few bucks, you'll be better off for it in the long run.

Twilight or super twilight definitely does NOT necessarily imply unlimited golf holes, although courses often add that provision. I'm not sure why either of you would be mad that the course wanted to charge you more. Try going into McDonald's, ordering a #3, and then telling the cashier, "Hey bro I'm just going to have some more fries, okay? I'm sure you need to the good word of mouth in this economy, mmmmkay?" Bottom line is they run their golf course the way they want, and you had no reason to think you could get something free. IMHO.

Spenda,
OMFG been there done that (including hitting massive drives to impress the girls who I'm sure were THIS close to insta-leaving their bfs and dropping trou wihth me on the range). Nothing tilts me more than roided up dbags who make contact ~75% of the time "teaching" someone else how to play.

Wow terrible analogy Jshuttles, french fries are a fixed cost, it doesn't cost the golf course anything more for you to keep playing (Spenda's point about being last in as the exception). A golf course is in the service industry, you aren't buying a product.
