Had a conversation with an old guy today who used to work for Sports Illustrated. I asked him if he ever covered golf. He said he did, and one time he was talking to Arnold Palmer and he invited him to hit some balls with him. But he said he didn't play golf at the time so he had to turn Arnie down since he had no clue how to even grip the club. The old guy was shaking his head as he told me this. Ouch.

Can anyone recommend a golf club travel bag? I have an older SKB hard shell, but thought I'd try a soft shell for my wife's clubs. Maybe someday I would transition to one to make packing the rental car easier.

I picked up the Club Globe collegiate w/ the pole and this thing offers no protection whatsoever. $320 for this? Nowhere near me has anything to look at, unfortunately, so it's all trial and error, and the collegiate was definitely an error. Might as well use a trash bag. It's not as pretty, but does about the same thing. I don't trust it to protect her $700 of clubs and there's no way I'd ever think to use it for all my brand new custom fit clubs!

in the old days you probably could have sent this paragraph in a letter to the manufacturer and received some type of worthwhile compensation. i think now the most you can hope for is a jelly of the month temp subscription and a pat on the butt, if you're lucky.

i've used a club glove with pole on three separate flights, one overseas, and never had a problem.

Anecdotal but I’ve used club glove collegiate with stiff arm for the last 8 years, about 15+ trips with no issues. Airlines, ship sticks and the bag is still in good shape as far as the exterior and I’ve had no damage to my clubs. The club area is well padded and the whole thing feels solid to me. What about it seems trash bag like?

It's a nice design and looks good, but it's more of a cover and doesn't offer much protection. I thought it would be reinforced in places somehow. She likes it though so I guess it'll be my guinea pig. Her driver and hybrid heads don't screw off.

just an observation, but all the guys i know who frequently fly with bags use soft sided cases with no complaints
it's the give and take with not choosing a shell
easier packing over confident protection

That's comforting. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Went through this this year. My partner is a lefty, we'd been to the range before, she tried right handed (my clubs) and had bought a 7 iron for hitting balls left handed.

But this year she moved across to be with me so joined my club as a social member, she can use the practice facilities and does as well as local driving range.

She actually went cack handed (yes left handed stance but right handed grip), she wouldn't listen, and was humoured by other members who just thought she was fannying around never having seen this woman before this year, even the assitant pro didn't change her grip on the *first* lesson

It was 5 months before she had her second due to a health issue keeping her off the course, by this time the AP had got used to seeing her around as she had done some practicing in this time, his first comment "did we talk about your grip last time"? He very quickly managed to get her onto a proper left handed grip and so we have moved on.

My point, unless she's very ambi, then go with left handed, yes it makes equipment a pain (jesus try even getting a RH ladies glove), but you've got to give yourself the best chance to succeed

I thought a common understanding is that it would actually make more sense to flip these and how right-handed people play is actually how left-handed people should play and vice-versa, because in a right-handed stance the left hand/arm actually is more dominant and it's better to push the club away rather than pull it away?

This is false. One reason is that the trail arm supplies the power in the swing.

Recently there was a yahoo in NVG advocating big time for this and I gently corrected him. His reply was I didn’t have an understanding of various things which of course is hilarious. I let it go because hey, it’s NVG. No real surprise. Just didn’t want others thinking it was true without a bit of pushback.

All things being equal, righties should play right handed and lefties should play left handed.

redeye, i love that channel. found it looking for links golf vids. im not certain of the exact situation, but it seemed like they went to Scotland to shoot some golf vids, and got stuck there because of covid. so they just kept making more vids visiting more courses. like the dream come true version of castaway.

Playing a mixed 9 hole scramble in a week and was wondering about something.

Our 6th hole is like 420ish it’s a par 4 for the men and a 5 for the women. How does this work in a scramble? In this particular scramble we have to take 2 tee shots each. So if it’s a Par 5 for the ladies I’d rather take theirs even if they only advance it like 50yards or so.

I imagine it might be different club to club though.

If I’m understanding this correctly, par doesn’t matter. In golf, lowest score wins. Usually score and relation to par are equal relative to each other. But if it’s not, lowest score wins.

Just received an email from the USGA officially announcing information regarding the golf ball rollback. The quick and dirty of it….

For elite players it starts 1/1/2028.

For others it starts 1/1/2030.

Longer hitters will lose more distance than shorter hitters.

Driver head tolerances will also be tightened.

This rollback is a terrible idea. Freeze distance gains where they are, sure. But no one is going to be interested in spending more money on a sport where they artificially can't hit it as far anymore. This is bad for interest in the game in general. For me as a hardcore golfer it may actually be good since courses will be less crowded.

I agree that it’s not good for the game for anything below elite events. The USGA’s statement said the overall opposition to bifurcation was extremely strong so that’s the route they went.
