MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Yeah not even going to bother clicking that, prices on the secondary market are insane even during normal years.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

I randomly decided to enter the lottery for next year's Open Championship at St Andrews.

Let's see how that goes.

I could start insulting posters again if that would help drive up traffic.

A lot of it is the most prolific posters were by far the worst posters. We have a much higher substance posted now.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

I keep reading about component shortages, mostly grips, but finally got nicked by it today -- got a call and learned that the shaft I chose for the wedge I ordered last week is out of stock. Oh well, there were plenty of others to choose from.

Match play. A "serious" amateur tournament. Your opponent hits it into the tall grass; do you help him look for it?

Nope, although I'll forever consider them a dick.

I wouldn't get mad personally but I wouldn't be helping you find your ball on the next hole

I hate it when you're helping someone find their ball and you know it's deep in that bush as it was pretty obvious yet they continue to take the full amount of time looking for it.

I also have a guy in my group that I play with regularly that hits his ball and when he hits a bad shot he'll look at the ground in disgust and lose his ball because he didn't get line on where it went.

I have a second thing to consider in Florida, snakes!

I might not be walking through the long grass but I am happy to look from the shorter stuff and eyeball into the longer stuff.

This.
I'd look but I wouldn't search.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

This is all about what I thought. I was caddying for a friend in said tournament, friend hit it in the tall stuff and opponent didn't even budge to search. Friend was mad, but I honestly didn't know the decorum there. Friend took it a bit further and told the opponent he was annoyed he didn't help him search....turned out to be an ok move because opponent was beating us to search areas for the rest of the round (which weren't too many).

One guy on the other team almost did something super assholish (at least in my mind)....his opponent hits it into the tall stuff, and while mumbling something, hits a provisional. Except he didn't clearly announce it was a provisional. He found his ball, but as we're walking up the fairway ******* guy says, "he didn't declare, he needs to hit his provisional and take stroke and distance." I mean, that's a somewhat silly one anyway, but the kicker was this guy was up 5 with 6 to play. I guess he really wanted to close it out (he ultimately let it slide).

As someone who has hit like 20 balls into tall fescue/native in tournaments this year, people basically universally help. I will always help other people, even in a match play situation...

I've played with some people who don't help over the years, and they are generally just bottom feeders.

Obvious exceptions if your group is running way behind or something and they want to hit first, or they're 100 yards on the other side of the hole or something.

I always grab my phone and just throw the stopwatch on now when I get to any ball search area so you don't end up with these ambiguous search times, my own searches included.

Do you think the Olympic golf should be amateurs? The pros probably dont want to be there and it would be an awesome experience for ams.

Important qualifier: This is just my opinion.

I don't think this is true - for a lot of the pros, the Olympics are a big deal. See, for example, the fact that Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson have Olympic tattoos. It's also a major-level opportunity to make a splash if you are not already one of the biggest names. A couple of the female pros, e.g. Charley Hull, withdrew from a major in order to be sure that they wouldn't have quarantine issues and could play in the Olympic event.

Sure, there are some who don't want to be there. But I think that's a pretty small minority.

As for whether the contestants should be amateurs, that ship has sailed in all Olympic sports. Amateurism is largely dead and buried. Personally I don't think there is any reason to make it all amateurs, that would shut out a lot of countries who might only have one or two golfers who could even possibly qualify and those players are almost certainly going to be pros.
