Not really an etiquette breach, but a mistake for certain. If you tell a group they can hit up, then it is assumed you are letting them through. No doubt. Regardless of the oddness of the single, the issue would have been easily rectified by calmly explaining the situation and that there is no place to go.
It's easy to explain and understand when you aren't in the heat of the moment, but now you know for the future and will be properly prepared.
As far as singles on the golf course, if the course is crowded then they aren't and should not be playing through. But if groups are scattered sparsely over the course, then the single should be allowed to play through if he catches one of them. It's basically just common sense when it's all said and done.
