Ok we agree. I usually devote the last 10 practice shots to messing around with 7 irons 8 irons and 5 woods(the closest thing I have to a rescue club) because these are the clubs that get me out of trouble most often.

What if that object blocking your shot is wind?

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

I just discovered golfballstamp.com and am seriously glad that I did. They can make me a custom stamp?! I was getting tired of drawing **** on my ball for identification, and now my troubles may soon be lifted.

Chipping with the driver isn't the worst play that guy could make.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Any tips or tricks to help keep lead tape in place on the bottom of the driver? I hate having to fix it after every swing. I currently have two strips on the heel of the club and the back 1/3 of it wants to bend. Not like I'm hitting the ground or anything.

Thoughts?

I have no personal experience with lead tape. However I know that adhering two smooth surfaces is difficult. It might help to scuff the adhering surfaces.

Nope. Holding the ball against the wind is something extremely high level players do that other players should never do if it does against your stock shot. I don't do it very often.

Bob, I'll tell you something that of course I don't know for a fact because I've never seen your game. But from what I've seen you post, if you had properly fitted clubs, I could quickly turn you into a single digit handicapper without touching your swing. Just by simplifying everything.

But as I also previously mentioned, not everybody plays this game to shoot the lowest score possible. Some play to create, experiment, and enjoy. And there's nothing wrong with that.

In the past I've never had issue with lead tape adhering properly. Only thing I can think of would be to make the top piece longer on both ends than the bottom piece so both ends would be thinner and perhaps less likely to come loose. Completely cover the bottom piece.

Two questions. 1, if your driver has a weight in the heel you can always put a heavier weight in eliminating the need for the lead tape. 2, weren't you fitted for this driver? If so, you shouldn't need lead tape.

For the most part, lead tape should be a thing of the past with all the options there are from custom fitting.

Callaway Rogue so no moveable weight. Self fitted but I'm an admitted golf equipment junkie so I knew how to fit myself into a club. I'm messing around with lead tape so I can try and turn the ball over easier. It's an admitted band-aid but it does work for me, at least til I can go to another fitting later this summer after I do SuperSpeed.

Was thinking maybe some duct tape would hold it a little better? If I like how this feels I would look into some hot melt until I buy a new one.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Just go to the auto supply store and get some bondo body filler. **** will never let go.

Hey bo, i appreciate the time you put in here helping us. I definitely do like to have fun with the game, particularly with 5 and 6 irons. The longer irons dont really do what I tell them to; I gotta stick with whats consistent with them. The shorter irons dont respond the way mid irons do to creativity. So basically 5 or 6 irons are those that I'm most confident drawing the ball in addition to hitting it straight. I'm not confident this year hitting a cut with anything but 4 3 or 2 irons so I havent been trying.

The Straight shot is working great though and its my most consistent shot with 8 7 6 5 irons.

My wedges draw slightly and I'm totally fine with that. I just aim a little to the right and it seems to go in the right direction.

3 wood and Driver are currently in experimental phase of trying to hit it straight on the range and using the results as guidelines for where to aim on the course.

I'm actually a huge fan of keep it simple stupid strategies. But I do get myself in tons of tough spots off the tee still.

Keep in mind that last year was 100% experimental. Previously I hadnt played golf nor been to the range in over a decade. Then after the winter, I was still in experimental mode. The shots I listed above are those that I have now limited myself to as the experimental phase is complete. I know which direction my clubs like to hit it now. I know my stock shots and I'm sticking to them. I shot my all time best 18 hole score the very day I decided to quit experimenting two weeks ago.

I still believe in the creation of the shot, Except that now its creating shots much more selectively. I think this is nice and congruent with rotellas teaching of "conservative strategy, cocky swing"

A golfer who tries to fit himself has a fool for a client.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Ive long since been fascinated by links golf. As a kid I had absolutely no interest in golf but around 12 years old I learned that the British open was a unique test because of the links courses the open championship is played on. I would tune in for a few holes some years or other years it came and went without notice by me. Then when I got into golf at age 20 in the year 2000, I was introduced to donald Ross courses, which are known for similarities with links golf. I sucked so naturally I loved the idea of being able to run the ball onto the green. This only enhanced my affinity for links golf. Then as I became aware of more and more golf stuff, Tom Watson slowly became my favorite player. Watching his incredible open run in 2009(I believe) with my dad was a great time. Last year when I began to frequent this forum, someone shared the tom Watson interview where he discusses the origin of the game, the way he was taught to treat others in part by golf, and luck, among other things. Well I must have been a ****ing shepherd in a past life because I saw the dunes and the ocean, which instantly looked like where I wanted to be. Now I wish I was on cape cod, but I digress...

I felt that was necessary for me to lay the foundation of why I love links golf because I'm about to review the front 9 of olde Scotland links in Bridgewater Massachusetts, after my morning coffee date. This is the card:

https://imgur.com/a/U9lYYtf

Front 9 is links style with tight firm fairways. Water on 3/9 holes. Undulating greens. Funny bounces everywhere. If you miss the fairway by more than 10 to 15 paces youre either in environmental protection areas with penalty, or youre in the high grass. Lots of forced carry off the tees. Really the only thing missing is pot bunkers.

Back in a bit. Good luck today.

Also a fan of links golf.

Not, however, a fan of "links"-style golf that doesn't involve firm turf. Overwatered lush shaggy bentgrass fairways in a wide open field does not make for a links.

But I digress.

I technically was fit for it at a demo day. The shaft I went out on a limb since I knew that bend profile fit me. I also had a full bag fitting about a year after that at True Spec in Naples and he said "I wouldn't change a thing."

Also only hit driver 4 times today but the duct tape route seemed to keep the lead tape in place. The last swing with it I heard an odd click sound but it still looks fine to me.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Ive been carrying an extra club since I added driver and 58 wedge. Think im going to drop the Wilson 5 wood and the 2 iron, replacing them with either a decent 5 wood or some driving iron hybrid. The gap between 3 iron and 3 wood on a 65 degree day is probably from 185 to 225 with a decent strike early in the round. Usually by the middle of the round I'm pretty fired up and get a few more yards. Late in the round can go one way or the other depending on how tired I am and what kind of contact ive Been getting that day. So lets use beginning of the round as reference.

So the halfway point from 185 to 225 is 205, but thats the fairway side of the coin. I want something that can be played from a wide variety of rough lies from 175+. I'm fairly ignorant of the pros and cons of 5 wood and hybrid, particularly out of the rough.

Please advise. Thanks.

Hybrid is going to be the easiest to play out of the rough.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Started SuperSpeed training yesterday. For sure placebo effect this early in the game but I seem to be getting distance back in my irons again, with remarkable ease.

Was gonna take my last round as a gauge of whether I am truly back to normal again. Went well so I signed up for the state 40+ championship the second weekend in July.

I went through the first superspeed protocol and part of the second but I had to hang it up due to mounting hand pain, careful of overtraining.

I have gained about 6mph of club head speed with driver though

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Since we are first out and have 5 tomorrow we are starting out 15 minutes early and playing the ladies tees. Should be fun. Yardages

1 - 409y par 5
2 - 273y
3 - 405y par 5
4 - 308y
5 - 236y
6 - 109y
7 - 281y
8 - 147y
9 - 234y
10 - 107y
11 - 302y
12 - 280y
13 - 427y par 5
14 - 271y
15 - 303y
16 - 132y
17 - 295y
18 - 453y par 5

3 of the par 5s are easy birdies, the 18th is a big dogleg that I can't cut the corner from the ladies tees as trees are too close. 6 of the par 4s are driveable. Some of the shorter ones have tree or water issues so they are questionable.

My handicap from the ladies tees is +2, see how it goes!

Playing from the ladies tees is just weird. You think itís going to be super easy based on yardage, but then you realize youíve never played from there before and it changes more than you think.

Iím predicting over par and hope you prove me wrong.

I have played the tees i thing 3 times prior. The key is to not be a pussy and hit iron off the tee. That being said guaranteed I am doing that if I'm going low late, lol.

Driver and/or 3 wood needs to be on point.

We play a heaven / hell event every year and I always play like crap from the forward tees and am nowhere close to my handicap.

How do you not not be a pussy when you're playing the ladies tees?
