Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

i'm reading a quick preview version of Tales from Q School and had to quickly google this Joe Daley putt that Feinstein mentions as there is no way it could have been as brutally unlucky as described.

OMG I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. And that putt kept him from getting his card. BRUTAL.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

So getting back into my golf over the past month after not playing for a few years and thought I search youtube for some tips, Came across of what I think is a great little channel.

Less of Club should be here, Turn Like this etc and more of free, Natural and effortless. I thought I'd share it because I know from my experience when I used to play I was so bogged down on swing thoughts.

Let us know what you guys think would love to get some opinions from the more experience golfers on here.

I agree, So glad I found it. I'm yet to actually practise this down at the range though but it feels so refreshing not to be bogged down with so many thoughts.

I may actually try and pay him a visit if I don't start picking it up.

I've been going to the range a lot and am realizing how damn expensive it is. I'm thinking I might do well to find a spot that offers unlimited range use with some type of membership. Anyone here have that sort of thing?

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

On swing thoughts: when I complete my preshot routine and my only swing thought is making solid contact, I hit much better shots compared with the times I either dont complete my routine, or when external factors creep into my mind during the swing. For examples, I dont always have the tight front shoulder engaged, sometimes my right hand is Too loosey goosey, sometimes I forget to waggle, occasionally my right leg gets lazy at top of backswing, oh and between 80 yards and 150 yards out with a good lie and a pin that I can attack, about 30% of the time thoughts of birdie putts creep into my mind. My thoughts are generally visually oriented and thus this takes away concentration from putting the clubhead on the ball.

Its interesting to me, and its generally a pain in the ass in all aspects of life. My concentration sucks. Being a visually inclined thinker, sometimes I will be deep in some analytical thought, or I might be telling a story, or explaining something complicated, when I can literally see the thoughts I'm visualizing fade away into the void of my mind. A moment later I'm clueless as to anything that was happening just a moment ago. Its a huge pain in the ass, but it has actually improved a lot due to improved clarity of thought from meds.

On the other hand , physical tasks hold my concentration. This is why I excel at physical labor. When youre carrying heavy **** up a set of stairs, only something very significant might break your concentration.

Where does golf fit on the spectrum? I think we need to look at it as a binary issue with physical and mental aspects.

Reminds me of my baseball coach. His number one rule was that he didnt ever get pissed about physical mistakes. However mental mistakes were treated differently. As a full time catcher, I screwed up from time to time mentally and it usually landed me on the bench. Of course theres no riding the pine on the golf course. Thus the mental mistakes need to be examined differently on the course. Physical mistakes are still tolerable, as muscle memory is learned and its continuously evolving through central nervous system development and or muscle gain or loss. Thus we must accept our physical limitations.

Perhaps this is why I enjoy the challenge of golfing. Feeling the weight of the club in my hand engages my mind and holds my concentration much like swinging a hammer. Its not the same concentration issue that I mention above. There are no vanishing thoughts on the course. However there are hopes dreams aspirations and fears that do distract me from the one and only swing thought that really matters. Put the clubhead on the ball.

End mental game ramble.

I'm in for a 2+2 Bandon trip any time once they lift border restrictions. Gamble Sands is another good PNW option. Or basically anywhere in the US for that matter. Got a huge golf travel itch after this covid crap.

No. They used to give you a 10% bonus when you loaded a range card, but they recently renovated the range, and ever since they no longer do that. They also raised the price by a dollar. If I bought a large bucket every day it would approach ~$4,750 by year's end! My twilight membership for the course is a fantastic deal at $1,070 for the entire year by comparison, and it is unlimited rounds from either one or two hours prior to regular twilight time.

A year or so back I checked out a place about 12 miles from me that offered for a year unlimited use of a grass range and a somewhat restricted short game practice area that I assume is in nice condition for around $2,500. Now I'm thinking it isn't necessarily so expensive after all. But I feel like the 12 mile commute is a big minus not just because my home course is a mere 4 miles away, but also because traffic could come into play more significantly. If the other place was the same commute, I might snap take the deal.

I also checked out the website of a spot that is quite popular in my larger vicinity that actually has two courses, one having been designed by Jack Nicklaus. They had membership deals for the courses that included unlimited range use for like just under $3,000 IIRC! But it is 30 miles away, which seems prohibitive. The 4 mile drive to my local course is huge plus really.

There is a funny tidbit about my range card at the local course that goes several years back, which is that one time they accidentally loaded $1,000 when I paid for just $100. But I got to thinking that it might have been a friendly gesture as they could have been well aware that I was frequenting it quite a bit, but I didn't want to seek clarity lest they end up correcting the "mistake." In hindsight though, that is still just peanuts compared to eventual expenditures. I wish I had started playing the course way back then rather than only using the range and practice greens, rather than waiting all the way to last November to finally get a membership. I had only played the course about two times with my brother many years ago around the time that he was on the high school golf team.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Had my first lesson in approximately a year. I will say that I have significantly improved in my over the top move over the past year, but I still have a long ways to go. I actually thought I was doing better than I thought but I am just getting better at squaring the clubface up while making the wrong move. That's going to take some working on.

The real trick is for me to get on the course without money on the line to be able to practice this.

I paid for a fitting at Club Champion and bought a 3W. They also speced me out for a hybrid with a custom shaft. Where do you guys go to purchase clubs with after market shafts?

I have the opposite problem. I need to stop playing on the course and just have a few range sessions. Literally I've gone full circle with my swing in the past month or so. I hit a few balls before the round and really I'm just trying to find something to get me round the course on that day and my swing could change the next day because I feel a bit different. (Probably doesn't change all that much in reality, probably just the feeling)

I want to say I shouldn't struggle with power with me being quite athletic, but I'm pretty short in distances. I feel myself thinking about being more worried about mis hitting the shot (Top, Chunk and Shank), in turn making me try to control everything to much just so I can get a half decent contact and I think this makes me use my hands and arms a lot more than I should.

The place where you were fitted for it. Companies like Oban and Graphite Design don’t send their shafts to every random golf shop. And then you have to have somebody extremely good at building to do it even close to correct.

It’s not worth trying to save a few bucks to have it done half ass.

Emergency 9 this evening to try it out. Def still a work in progress. Short irons and surprisingly driver were going good, all else questionable. I thought I killed a drive and it measured out at 288. I was thinking WTF that was downwind on the tee box. Til I get to the shot and wind is blowing directly into me. /brag

Also had 240 to pin and 208 to cover water on 2nd to par 5 that I rarely get to. Hit 3 hybrid to what I thought was a downwind shot. Nope, straight in.

Did I mention I hate playing in the afternoon wind?

I read this five times as "today I learned" and kept wondering how on earth it took a day to figure out which way the wind was blowing.

I finally just read it as "til", as in "until" and, um, ok, got it. I'll see myself out.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Did some swing videos today:

Couple things. Fast forward to about 12 seconds so you don't have to watch me waggle to death. It's hard for me to get comfortable when working on my swing. Also, click through to YouTube to watch it from there at 0.25 speed. I didn't auto do that otherwise its a 2 minute video.

Stuff I'm working on.

1. Shoulder alignment. I am slightly open in the video but getting better here.
2. My takeaway is way inside. This is one of the next areas of improvement I am working on. I will be taking it a little further outside on the way back so...
3. I have a slight over the top move right when I start the downswing. That's the really big work in progress. It was terribad 2 years ago.

Disregard me flashing the #1 at the end. This is me noting on the video the quality of the swing 1 = good, 2 = ok, 3 = bad.

Not really looking for suggestions, just thought I would share my process.

How do you get your YouTube video to show up in the post. I'm trying to put one of my swings into a post, and I just uploaded it to google, but when I preview the post, it just shows the link.

I want to learn how to post a swing, and I also thought this was a good one.

Refreshing to see that players that are way better than me can also kinda have the butt suck move towards the ball. Trying to keep my butt out and away from the ball through impact and it really helps prevent me from coming over the top and casting at the ball.
