Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

I either read or watched something the other day about iron distances. You can easily have people with the same driver distance be 2 clubs different in the irons. It's all about how hard you go after your irons.

Come to think of it it might have been a post on WRX. Someone was comparing swing speeds. Both had 110 with the driver and their 7 iron speeds were 6 mph different.

Yeah thatís why Iím so interested in this topic...I struggle a bit with my anything longer than a 7-iron and am really quite good with 7-pw.

If I were to get 20 extra yards with a juiced 7 iron and hit it like my 7 iron now as opposed to my 5 iron, thatíd be a game changer. And this has at least made me feel good, knowing that Iím (probably) not really inadequately short, but just using ďoldĒ equipment.

My case is more extreme than yours. My clubs were 20 years old...maybe more. I lost track of how long I had them, but they were Titleist DCI, the first year they came out w/ DCI. I got them and have used them up until 2 years ago when I was finally fit for new irons.

When I hit them side by side 2 years ago after my P790s were delivered, there was literally a 2 club difference between the P790 and the DCI. On top of that I was so much more accurate w/ the new P790s.

Go get a fitting, but it's like going to the dog pound to "look at dogs." Don't go unless you plan on spending the money, because you will probably be hooked right away on the new clubs!

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Crazy! Unfortunately my fitting would likely be extremely boring. Either the Titleist guy was a fraud, or I'm just an extremely average person, because I was stock everything.

The p790 7 iron is 5 degrees less loft than the AP2 I'm hitting, which is probably a club and a half. That's insane! Not even accounting for other new technology. That means I'd be hitting it 165-170? hard to fathom.

Even if you end of with stock everything its still worth paying for the fitting because you know you have the right equipment.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Couple of interesting (and related) golf podcasts I listened to recently...

Malcolm Gladwell re-aired an episode called A Good Walk Spoiled on his Revisionist History podcast. Evidently it is one of his most popular episodes as voted on by his listeners. Essentially Gladwell's rant about all the reasons why golf sucks and is a stupid sport for the rich, white, and entitled. He does make some valid points about the ludicrous tax advantages offered to places like the Brentwood Country Club.

The guys at The Drop Zone podcast then did a response, talking about the stuff Gladwell got wrong about golf (a lot), as well as the areas where they agreed with him. It was good.

BTW the Drop Zone is an excellent show that I highly recommend. They did a great interview with Joel Dahmen a few months back, about being a "regular", relatively anonymous member of the PGA tour. Dahmen is a great interview and I became a fan of his after listening.

Your Titleist fitter only had a few shafts to choose from, only the ones that Titleist offers which wasn't that many at the time. And only Titleist heads as well. So a fitting like that is extremely limited.

As far as iron fitting, figuring out the head is the easy part. Figuring out the shaft is the tricky and probably more important part. You probably can gain almost two clubs with a good fitting, the question is can you be consistent with the distance in doing so. It doesn't make any difference if you can hit a 7-iron 175 one time and then 155 the next.

FWIW, at 5'10" 165 lbs, my stock distance for a Ping i210 7-iron(33 degrees) with a 105 gram Nippon steel shaft is 170 yards. You can't necessarily compare driver distance, it's all about learning how to properly compress the ball between the blade and the ground with irons. You don't swing up on it like a driver. I can hit a club like the Ping g710(29.5 degrees, hollow body) with a lighter graphite shaft 190 yards, but it's not as easy to control the numbers.

If you want to get fit correctly in the DFW area, I can tell you where. It's $150 for an iron fitting which does not go towards the purchase of any clubs. The builders are the best I've seen, you wouldn't want to take the specs and have someone else try to cobble the components together.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

All I can say is I did an iron fitting last fall at Club Champion. I was still carrying Pings from like 2004 some with replaced shafts, etc

The end product has been a revelation. Iron play went from far and away the weakest part of my game to somewhat of a strength. I hover between a 2 and a 3 fwiw though I expect that to improve this summer. I was ~+3 when I was playing.

My perspective is that the shaft tech is the largest improvement since I was last "fitted".

Great experience. Highly recommend
