What do y’all think about this prop bet?

My buddy (15 index) from the tips (6800 yards or so) vs my non-golfing wife from 100 yard marker on each hole. Match play.

Wife’s strategy is obv exclusively use putter. Difficult course fwiw. Probably brings his course handicap to a 18 or so.

I think your buddy wins pretty easily. My wife usually makes in the 7-10 range from 100 yards on short par 3 courses and she's played 2-3 times and been to the range 3-4x.

Depends on what you mean by non golfing though and how much practice is allowed beforehand. If shes never hit a ball before theres going to be some big numbers.

Nongolfing = never played? If so, you lose every time. Unless you can teach her to hit like a 9 iron around 50+ yards consistently and how to lag putt very well, you are going to lose. She's going to make double or worse almost every hole with the occasional lucky bogey IMO.

She took lessons 20 years ago in HS and does twilight scramble with me every now and then. She is semi athletic but a terrible golfer. A true 40 handicapper at least.

But how much would a strategy of her putting like she is playing croquet increase her odds? I’m thinking putt w driver until she’s on the green. Match play also obviously helps her odds.

IDK. From 100 yards she is going to have to swing pretty hard with either putter or driver. Lot of room for terrible shots. To beat him she would need to get on the green in 3 and 2 putt or better basically every hole. The occasional double bogey may be good enough for a tie but he will bogey most holes with a few pars. She hopefully wins all the par 5s which helps, but not enough imo. Whatever club she can most consistently hit 50+ yards would be the one I'd recommend she uses for every shot until putter is usable.

I think she would be a significant dog. Just think of a 36 cap player and how much they 3-putt. A 2-putt happens maybe 1/2 the time???

If the course was open in front of all of the greens then I think chances of winning goes up.

Yes she should likely win all of the par 5's but she would likely lose all of the par 3's.

If using a putter the whole way is the optimal strategy she's a huge dog.

If she's only a 40 hcp I'd find a 460cc, maybe 15-18 degree loft club with a shortish shaft and I'd just have her hit that off the tee on every hole.

She's not playing from the tees.

She's not allowed to tee it up?

She can tee it up from 100 yards like it’s a normal tee box.

I've always felt like having your fingers pointing down the grip made it easier for the club to twist out of position, but that's not based on anything but words coming out of my ass.

Played the last 27 holes with this and so far so good. I went and changed the Scotty back to normal length and added a counter balance grip, so basically the same as the Odyssey I had. Looking for even better things.

Here's an odd one. My wife has a starter women's set from Top Flite that cost about $200-$250. The driver she just started using because she's swinging a little faster this year. Previously she was using 3W.

I just got this driver

Model: Epic Flash SubZero
Loft: 9°
Setting: -1/D, weight set to full draw
Shaft: Evenflow Blue 65
Flex: 6.0
Length: 45"
Grip: Tour Velvet 360 Standard

Stiff shaft, 8°. She wanted to hit it and I said go ahead. You probably won't get it off the ground. She doesn't get the ball up very easily. She smoked one out there at a decent loft for her, about 150-155 vs hers that she hit about 140-145.

How can that be? I know it cost more than twice as much as her set, but it was setup for my swing. I swing around 95 MPH. She was swinging so slowly last year that her coach suggested using 3W off the tee.

The longer the shaft the easier it is to get the ball up in the air. I'm guessing her shaft is much shorter than 45".

And of course the newer technology in your driver assists in getting the ball up in the air.

Yep. I just checked and it's 3"taller than hers

Starting to get my speed back. Trackman is set to Denver altitude.

Looks just like mine, except cut the speed in half and change all the number 3s in the distance column to 1s.

Nice.

How did you get all that information; club speed, spin rate and some others? The driving range about 40 minutes away has trackman, but I don't have all of that in my Android app. Was it a private session? Total, carry, ball speed, launch angle and height is all the data points it captures.

I was on an individual trackman for an hour or so. I'm assuming the range has trackman range or whatever it's called?

Yes. It was a buggy mess all last year and didn't record the shots very often. Supposedly they've got it figured out this year.

120mph. Nice. Would love to see a vid of the driver swing. I am always amazed by people who can swing that fast. Think I hit 97 on the trackman once.

I'm happy to be within 3 mph of your lowest # as a 45 year old. Hockey was good for something growing up.
