It's the kind of thing I'd keep on in the background while doing something else if I happened to remember it and I didn't have something else to do (and it was free ovb).

And at the end I would realize I hadn't been paying attention and look for the final results somewhere on screen.

I'll just leave this here as any accompanying comment I could make to try to be funny or add to it would be too painfully obvious to be funny anyway:

I would pay -$30 to watch Phil play golf right now, so I am not going shell out $50 to watch the spectacle...

What are my chances of winning this bet?

I’m a healthy, semi athletic 34yo male with a 25 handicap. Just joined a country club this summer that is just down the road from my house. Ten years ago before I had kids, I was a 13 handicap playing every few weeks on public courses.

My buddy is same age w a 5 handicap. At the lowest he’s ever been.

He just gave me 4 to 1 odds that I can’t beat him straight up before I turn 38.

I get 5 official chances at any time of my choosing. I must give him 1 week notice. Cannot veto/cancel my request unless dealing w legit issue.

I pick the tees we play from and if match or stroke play.

FWIW, I’m motivated to get better regardless of this bet and will be taking lessons on some kind of normal schedule.

I actually like your chances a lot. The only thing really going against you is getting 5 chances. If you play and practice enough I think you could easily get down to a 10 or lower. Then you have a chance.

If he plays and practices a lot he should be almost even money on any single round against a 5hcp within like 3 years imo

I don't think that's the only thing really going against him here...

25 vs 5 is a really big difference. Especially when the 25 was 13 in their prime.

It clearly depends a lot on how much time and effort can and will actually be put into improving here, but realistically for most people, and even assuming friend will not improve, or perhaps even get worse from here, I'd take your friends side of this bet any day.

So you think you can beat a golfer currently 20 strokes better than you given only 5 chances within 4 years? People always underestimate just how difficult it is to improve this much. And some will never get to a 5 no matter how much they practice, that's what many don't understand.

You can win, but are a substantial dog.

if you can get him to agree with you teeing from the forward tees and him from the pro...you got a chance otherwise, my $$ is on your friend.

Any possibility of catching him at the course while he is stumbling drunk?

If not, you are a significant dog with those terms.

What's your technique for greenside bunkers with somewhat compacted sand?

This used to be a shot I totally dreaded. It felt nearly unplayable for me with how I used to play it, either trying to pick it clean or play a digging type of shot.

Since I've tried practicing it a decent amount, I've found normal/traditional bunker technique does pretty well, with just a couple adjustments. I play the ball forward in my stance, but only slightly. I come in more steeply to avoid skipping the club off the sand. Club is still super open. I've had good results with it, got close from all 3 bunker shots I had today.

By compacted, I meant somewhat wet sand, actually.

Well I certainly wouldn’t play him stroke play. Match play depending on your strengths is your best bet. Play the closest tees you can, and become very good with your putter. I played my cousin who is a teaching pro, I was a 14 and he was scratch. We played match play and I was up 1 after 3 holes...forgot how it finished though.

I figure I’m a dog, but not by a significant margin. My thoughts:

- I was down to a 13 ten years ago with limited play. Before I picked golf back up a couple months ago, I probably played 5-10 times in the last 10 years at corporate scrambles. I’m assuming I can get to sub 15 more quickly/easily than if I had never been there previously.

- My golf game was completely self taught and I never played more than once/week. I picked up the game after college. I was never close to full potential.

- Based solely on the two points above, I think it’s a near certainty I can reach single digits in the next two years or so with lessons and a regular but reasonable practice schedule.

- My buddy can spank the ball off the tees. Playing the ladies tees will help me bridge our skill difference.

- Playing in the middle of winter may possibly bridge the skill gap...just a hunch on this, may hurt me too much to make a difference.

FWIW, I walked 9 Sunday and went: double, par, par, bogey, par, bogey, double, triple, quadruple.

from 13 to 5 is 5 times harder then going from beginner to 13.

Does the 5 ever play in tournaments or under pressure?

I don’t need to get to a 5 though to have a decent shot at winning one out of 5 on my terms though. Does a 9hc beat a 5hc 20% of the time? Serious question - I have no idea. Any way to do the maths to come up w an estimate?

Club tournaments - no serious amateur tourneys. Also, we play wolf once/week or so. I’d say under pressure he’s no better or worse than expected.

your best bet is to practice for two years, hope he forgets about the bet, and then you challenge him on like the third week of february

Why are you assuming your handicap will drop yet your buddy's will remain constant?

And while I have read what you wrote, you are underestimating the difficulty of improving. You are also assuming you will stay disciplined and put in the time, not always easy.

But, you seem to understand you are a dog, so you've got nothing to lose.
