i've tracked/mentioned this stat before...

kenny perry shot a 60 today on champions tour. 5 strokes better than anyone else in the field....

i remember once that delaet was 5 strokes better and i think others had done it. delaet's doing it was what got me thinking.

we tried to figure out if geiberger's 59 was 6 strokes better than field but can't remember the conclusion

ok, it looks like geiberger's 59 and furyk's 59 (59, NOT 58) were 6 strokes better than field.

not exactly sure how old the article was but it listed alot of sub-60 rounds and none of the others were 6 strokes better. and i don't think furyk's 58 was 6 strokes better...... alot of sub-60 rounds were 4 or 5 strokes better.

apparently one of the best rounds vs. player average (different than the stat i mentioned in previous posts) was ken duke shooting 65 at TPC. obviously scores very high... or another excellent score vs. field was Jager in web.com bahamas way 7 or strokes better than field at 71. remember my acquaintences shooting horrible scores in that event.

Someone in Houston shot a 65 when the wind blew like crazy. Scores were super high that day.

Things I think:
Jesper Parnevik
4th Round
2005 or so

I remember olazabal doing something like that, don't remember where or exactly the number, but it was like a 63 with barely any other scores in the 60s.

Was the Bahamas one a couple of years ago with like a 40 mph wind?

Charley Hoffman 65, first round 2017 Masters (William McGirt 69). Biggest first round lead at Masters since 1955.

Larry Nelson 65, third round 1983 US Open (3 others 69).

Tom Watson 68, second round, 1979 Memorial. Tom Kite only other player to match par, 72. 42 of the 105 players in the field failed to break 80.

Ted Tryba 61, third round, 1999 LA Open (Tiger Woods 65). Tryba had to make birdie on #18 to shoot 59 at Riviera. He ended up missing the green and bogeyed.

Here are the results of my searches for players who had the best round of the day by at least 5 strokes in an official PGA Tour event.

I have covered all Masters tournaments, all stroke-play PGA Championships, and went back to 1930 for both the US Open and British Open. For non-majors, I went back to 1958.

I am pretty confident that the rounds appearing in the table below are correct, but there may be others as well (though I tried to be comprehensive).

By the way, I would estimate that there are several hundred rounds in which a golfer bested everyone else in the field that day by at least 4 strokes.

Does everyone have multiple putters that they rotate in and out of the bag? I have a mallet right now and have had a blade and a mid-mallet as well within the past year. Had to sell the last two to fund some tournaments and now I'm kicking myself for doing so.

I have noticed that on courses with big greens I tend to get wild with a mallet putter. Like I have no clue on distance control on the long putts. I can also be multiple feet off on direction from my intended line. I def love the mallet for faster greens and for putts 15 feet and in.

Maybe try a squareback desgn?

All I know is that mid-mallets do not seem to do the trick for me at all.

I have lots of putters and when I'm putting poorly (like this season) they get shuttled in and out of the bag with great frequency, often two at a time. Which is not to suggest that that is a good idea. The couple of seasons where I've putted decently I stuck with the same putter. I really should go back to the center shafted model and stick with it.

Also in the genre of the search for the holy grail, pondering the idea of picking up an R flex driver shaft. The R flex redboard in the 917f2 I picked up is performing well.

Experiment with weight. Add weight to the head 10g at a time. It helps to steady your stroke, specially on long putts for me. It also forces you to slow down your stroke. Heavier putter seems to need less force to make the ball go the same distance. You can also add weight to the grip end to counterbalance it and find your happy median. I've never putted better in my life than I do now that I've found my perfect balance and I rarely practice putting anymore.
