Anyone ever play a scramble just for fun when out with a 4some? MY buddy constantly wants to just play a scramble whenever he golfs with us. He's a pretty good golfer (11hc) but he says it's more fun, less aggravating since less focus on the score and we are all working as a team, etc. My feeling is that aside from charity outings, I'd rather keep score and play my own ball. Scramble seems to defeat the purpose.

Play a four man scramble or 2 vs 2? Playing a scramble by yourselves seems kind of pointless and not fun. But 2 vs 2 can be fun.

This!

Only time I do a scramble outside of a tournament is when my 11 yo comes along and plays.

A lot of bad golfers who only play 1-2 times a year like playing scrambles bc of less pressure, lost balls, etc.

In the "I'm officially old" department I am eligible for my first seniors event. I have actually been eligible for a number of years now.

Don't think I have ever played a 4 man scramble by ourselves before. We do play a lot of 2 v 2 better ball shamble though. Everyone tees off and you and your partner pick the drive then both play your own ball from that spot. Good way to have some fun off the tee

Yea single 4 man scramble sounds super dum. I want my individual score, that's why I play. Save that stuff for tournaments.

At a club I belonged to for several years a large group gathered every Saturday morning, split into foursomes or fivesomes and had all kinds of bets swinging everywhere. After 27 or 36 holes, some would leave and those who remained often broke off into groups to play a scramble against one another--with more bets, of course.

But playing a scramble with a single group and no competition seems like the height of golf stupidity and boredom.

+1, playing a scramble is pointless unless there is competition, whether it's against 1 other group or a whole field.

Kind of related: One of these days when the course isn't busy I'm going to play a one man scramble, where if you wish you can hit a second shot and play the better one. I'm curious to see how much, if any, my score would improve. I'm thinking probably four or five shots, but that's without spending much time pondering.

My home course has a two ball scramble but of course they play it from the women's tees

You only have to be 40 for that, so that's not too bad.

play a two ball, one man scramble but choose the worse ball. the better ball lets you know well you can hit it, the worse ball gives you opportunity to improve.

I would think you would be way lower than 5 since you get 2 cracks at every putt.

I think I would just miss twice as often

I've always wanted to play in a tournament where you get the option to hit a mulligan after every shot - but if you do take the option, you must play the 2nd ball and not the first.

I know I'd shoot a 66.

Course I grew up on started doing this in one of their annual tournaments. Never played it, not sure how much I'd improve over normal score.

drove my tee ball into the pond on 11. found it on the edge, dropped it, and as i was taking a practice swing, my 4H flew out of my grip and sailed into the pond. f*ck! playing partner came over to commiserate/laugh his ass off, pointed into the pond, said 'hey look.'

the grip of the club was just visible about an inch below the surface. it was standing vertical, grip up, head in the mud, about eight feet in. yeah, ok.

off went the shoes, socks, and shorts. he hands me his ball retriever. i wade in. it's all goo, black sludge and golf balls. three steps in i am sinking over my knees, and i can feel dozens of balls slipping around under the muck. reaching way out, hoping not to topple, i lie the ball retriever over the top of my club's shaft, it drifts down about 10 inches, i twist the handle, get a grip, and haul my club to safety.

partner tosses me a towel. i wipe down my legs, find my shorts, clean my club. we let the two ladies following us play through.

One time my friend threw a club in anger and it got stuck way up in a tree, probably 20 feet up in a group of those trees with thorns. He proceeds to throw about five more clubs into the trees to try and hit it out before giving up and start climbing. We must have spent an hour watching him and strategizing where to climb. His clothes were ruined and he had scratches everywhere. But he got every club outta there.

Any recommendations for swing analysis apps? I videoed my swing last night and it is ugly.

I highly recommend getting a coach vs doing it on your own. Way too easy to go down a rat hole and tie yourself in knots.

Yes, way lower depending on your HC.

Around me these tournaments have become quite popular. one-man best shots and you get to hit twice from every shot and pick the best one. I average between even par and +7 on any given day playing straight up and when I play these tournaments I average -6 to -12 depending on how well I'm playing. Generally 6 shots better minimum up to 15+ shots better.

These are by far my favorite tournaments to play.

I would love to play one of those events on my course. Hit one in play then let em rip, or vice versa.

Edit: I might actually do that tomorrow if I am a single first off. Perfect chance to use the new driving iron.

i have seen some reference recently to split strong/neutral grips being popular i.e. palms don't face each other.

but i get confused as to announcer's analysis. they mention right and left hand but i'm never sure if it's viewer's or player's perspective.

i'm thinking it's top hand - closest to grip end - neutral and bottom hand - power hand - strong. but not sure... my theory is top neutral hand controls path, bottom hand manipulates clubface relase and and adds power.

note: it could be the opposite though as i sense that's what one teaching pro i went to was espousing.
