Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

I usually play from the whites. My recent outing was with my cousin, who played D1 golf, and he won't play the whites so I just played the blues with him. I was just comparing my last round saying how he has such a luxury of hitting it so far that he can usually have a short iron in hand regardless of where he hits it.

Cliffs: I believe the further you hit it off the tee, the more room for error you have.

The trackman numbers for what I bought were definitely better than anything else I tried except for a few shafts that were too expensive for my taste (the driver shafts DJ and Spieth play specifically).

I was concerned going into the fitting about hitting off mats because I never hit well off mats so I worry that that caused me to get a bad fitting due to not striking the ball the same as I would off grass and some of the better club fits appearing worse.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

driver overrated. i've made it to 2nd overall in net standings and 6th in gross with only a 208 average off the tee, although its up to around 220 with a recent online lesson from the guy i posted before. I think I am like 50th of 55 on our simulator tour in driver distance. we typically play 6200-6600 yard courses.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Went to range before a round. Tried to swing more flatter, which would be more on plain for me. Hit a bucket of 35 balls, woulda liked to hit more but had the round to play. Some good hits, some bad. Was not expecting much for the round. Irons and wedges were great in the beginning and pretty good all the way. Driver okay. Did not melt down at any point and hit top-5 round of summer, even though went 2 for 9 from 8-13f range, two lip-outs, the other being a full 360 damit.

Had some luck too, and pretty sure there will be some problems with the new swing, but nice first round for sure and fun to see what will happen going forward. Now I know I should hit the range and try to get reps and figure things out. Prolly will skip that and get rounds in (winter is coming).

Not sure how old you are, but based on my experience playing hundreds of rounds at munis, 240 driver probably puts you in the top 30% of recreational players. You can chase more distance but I'm not sure how much it would help your overall handicap.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Found this interesting article about how far players really hit it... a lot less far than most people think. For ex median drive for 5-10hc is 231 yds. Even <5 hcs is only about 250.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Does that include all tee shots or just drivers? if it's all tee shots I can easily understand and 240-250 is very solid. I guess I just play with younger people but I don't know anyone who can't hit a driver at least 275ish (30 year old range). I'd imagine with olds 225+ is huge. My own average is probably around 250-260 when you account that I hit hybrid or 4 iron at least half the time and 3W the other half.

Yeah, I have no problems with distance with my driver...and I'm 53. I'm still going for some par 5s in two...

I also find people have no idea how far things actually are. I average like 265-270 off the tee and people always say I must average 300

Nothing's more fun than blowing a drive by one of you "youngs."

My favorite golf pic I took after me and this guy got to our drives and I had out-driven him by ten yards. Of course, he's my age, so it may not count.

It's driver distance only. I think you must play with much better than average players, if they all hit at least 275. That certainly hasn't been my experience, even when I'm paired up with younger guys.

Yeah same here. I think that's because my drives might average 30 yards further, and they are convinced they hit it 270, so mine must be 300. In reality they are hitting it 240.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

My driving distance varies widely based on how well I hit it, ball flight, and wind/hole conditions. I can hit driver 75+ yards longer on one hole than I did on the last even in relatively benign winds if I mis**** the first and crush the other one with a draw.

I do think people tend to throw out all their bad drives when talking about distance and consider the best one they hit all day to be how far they hit their driver. Like sure I hit some drives 340, but I hit more of them 260.

When I play in work related events though it seems like whoever I play with always talks about how far I hit it, but they forget that ~2/3 of my drives actually go less than the average which is skewed upwards by a few tee shots I really get a hold of.

I do find it hard to judge actual driving distance though because I never really trust the tees to be the distance listed on the card and without knowing the actual distance of the hole its all guesswork rather than basic math.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

we all have those Garmin golf watches that measure out shots. I wouldn't say anyone in my group is particularly good at golf.. the best are probably 10-12hcp and nobody is very accurate. I guess we can of swing hard and hit far for pride because we all suck at everything else.

Working on the rest of the game this year though! Hopefully can get below a 10 by the end of the year.

Notice he didn't say average here, so perhaps at least once the people he plays with have hit the cart path with a 30mph tailwind.

LOL. Good stuff.

Or perhaps OP plays at 8000ft altitude.

I wonder if there is anybody on the planet that thinks they AVERAGE less than they actually hit it.

But the above distance chart should be considered by Eddy here among others.

I'm not bragging about being good at golf because I'm not, but I can swing a driver upwards of 120mph (117-118avg). I actually got fitted for irons yesterday on trackman and averaged over 240 carry with a 4i in the i200 and g400. Had a 208 carry avg with a g400 7i with nippon shaft. There was no wind and it was pretty close to sea level. Just used to play hockey and baseball.

Yea I think the problem is everyone overestimates out of pride + only think about their top ☓% of drives and ballpark that "average" without considering all their big misses that go 120 yds.

definitely don't count the pop-ups and the chunks lol. they probably account for 20%. another 50% are out of the fairway and who knows where, they don't go quite as far either.

Wow...practice your short game 20 minutes every day for a year and you'll be unstoppable

I had literally never practiced a chip/pitch until last year and a putt until this year. I'm basically happy gilmore lol. Been hitting the short game hard and got fitted for wedges and putter this year. Should be able to get at least 15 strokes below what I was 2 years ago by end of year. Actually enjoying the short game practice too which I've always thought I would dread!

so you don't count the bottom 70% of your drives in your driver average?
