How would you like to be stuck behind him? Good thing is you could play through him and be gone before he even played a shot.

Maybe it's just a drill type thing

Someone posted this on another site but it is worth the read about golfing at the only golf course in North Korea.

Would anybody buy a longer than standard (+1-2") driver shaft to use in a scramble?

I know they are harder to hit than a std length, but given the scramble mindset I'm wondering if a handful of people per tourney would plop down $50-$100 dollars for a shaft they could just swap out.

Thoughts?

I don't think the benefits would outweigh the costs (and likely rewards). Just go buy some Pinnacle Golds for off of the tee.

unless you practice with it a ton, which will probably have a good chance of ****ing up your normal swing you will get more yards hitting the center of the club face of the standard length. That said if someone handed it to me and said try it I would take a few swings with it. No chance I buy one, plus you will never get a good one for under a $100

+1 to just using a distance golf ball (though I haven't ever tested say a Pro V vs a Pinnacle and how much longer the Pinny is).

I doubt you'd hit a 1-2" driver better anyways.

Its been stated before but if you really want to win a scramble the key is to cheat.

Why does this keep getting said? I've won scrambles before without cheating.

I've won tons also, but it's true the vast majority of the time. I've watched "winners that shot -19" stride up for their prize and it's obvious none of them could break 100.

I was part of a four man team with two +5's and two scratches and we shot a legit -24. Maxed out everywhere, couldn't have shot any lower without holing a shot from 100 yards plus. Didn't win.

Did you talk to that team afterwards and ask them how they shot better?

-24 seems incredible. 5 par 5s on that course or a couple driveable par 4s? Or was there some gimmick that changed scoring? How the **** did anyone else claim to do better?

I've won one last year with a 58 and the second best score was 63 out of ~15 teams. Obviously not many good golfers, but would have been trivially easy for anyone to cheat and post a 60 and not be second guessed. I know two guys on one of the teams that shot a 65 are both legit mid single digit handicappers and the others were supposedly around the same so something in the 50s would've been more than believable for them, but they just said they missed tons of 15 footers.

I've been in the same boat.

Four scratch golfers and we shot -19. As always, while warming up on the range, you sort of scope out the opponents. Sure enough, a team that I distinctly remember hitting huge banana peels / duffs came in with a -23 and we finished 2nd.

No gimme rope. No mulligans. No honesty.

They should go the way fishing tournament went because of all of the cheating. You draw a name out of a hat for the prize.

Just as long as you understand the unwritten rules going in you'll be fine. Don't worry about what you can't control. Just have fun, eat, drink, and be merry with your friends when playing scrambles.

Another funny story, scratch buddy of mine who's a teacher gets us in this 2-man scramble every year with little real competition and decent cash prizes with a calcutta after the first round which pays out only the second round scores. We're leading after the first day and naturally paired with the team in second place. Well, the second place team had bought us in the calcutta and of course we took half. So any time we had a short putt, basically anything under 6 feet they kept trying to give it to us! Saying that there's no way both of us would miss and such. We putted each and every one of them of course and never missed one, but it sure was weird having to argue with our supposed opponents on whether or not we needed to putt.

So even though you get paired with another team doesn't guarantee cheating won't happen! Another year we caught the team we played with the first round cheating not once but twice! They did not get away with it.

In the end we legitimately shot -25 for two rounds on a simple 6000 yard course to win by 7.

My favorite cheating/scramble moment involves the head pro of a club that hosts a big pro-am every year. Pros play their own ball and the Ams 4man scramble.

Halfway through the round, I see the head pro driving back and forth over the course of 30-45 minutes (3 or 4 holes) checking on various groups for whatever reasons. He stopped by our group because one guy hadn't paid or something because he was replacing whoever was supposed to be there. My initial thought was "that's strange that he's not playing today, he always plays".

We get in and he has posted a 67 to win the pro side of the event by one. I never said anything to anyone, but in my head I'm like, there's no way he even played like 3 or 4 holes. What a crock of ****.

When I lived in Florida there was a local Rugby team who put on a fundraising scramble once or twice a year. It was mostly drunken rednecks playing and my Dad and I had a team of ringers that would win most of the time. That was great until this 10-12 year kid and his Dad's team came along and started winning every scramble. They didn't do it by cheating though.

Spoiler:
The kid's name was Billy Horschel.

All scrambles should be ran the same way. You sign up your team and just before go time there's a draw to see what teams play together. You should never get to pick what team plays along side you. I'm in the Midwest and I don't know if I've ever been to one where this wasn't the case. Not to say there isn't still cheating, but it has to lesson the chances some.
