That's nutty. Honor system then? No thanks. I would never play that.

Yeah I almost never play in them but are popular where I grew up mostly for charity. Guaranteed almost always the last team to turn in there card always comes in 1 less than the leader on the board. Pretty much a joke but hey it is partially for charity so whats a little fudging on the score card. These are the same types that sell mulligans and all sorts of screwy ways to buy advantages.

I have played in a 4-man team competition at away courses 3 times in the past month, including one today.

Today it cost £60 for the team at a course which has a normal green fee of £40 per round on a Sunday. Yes, there are some cheats, but we usually have several teams from our own club, and we have our own bets, and play a nice course for a really low price.

That's the way you have to look at the team matches - most clubs have Open team matches once or more times per year around here.

If anyone wants to make a two-some with me along the following approximate itinerary, let me know!

9/13-9/15 Cleveland
9/15-18 Ohio, then central Pennsylvania on the way to Boston.
9/18-9/22 Rhode Island and Massachusetts seaboard
9/23-25 Upstate New York, Niagara Falls.
9/26-27 Across Canada, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee

Appreciate any advice.
Are you on the Canada side for any of the Niagara leg? I highly recommend Grand Niagara.. It's a really stunning Rees Jones course and my favourite in the area.

I have played in a couple of events where we played as a group of eight (two foursome teams), but it's certainly not common. I have also seen a requirement that each team bring along a fifth person who is randomly assigned as a scorekeeper to one of the other teams.

Charity events (or hit n' giggles as someone I know calls them) are never run seriously, so it's always just your group of 4 and the honor system. Plus whatever stupid revenue raising twists they throw in.

I've been in Europe and haven't touched a club for 2.5 weeks, I'm absolutely jonesing to play. I've walked 170 km since this trip started and have some serious blisters on my feet, I'm going to look like a cripple on the course

I bought these for my rounds:

Not from the PGA store but a local one had a buy 2 get 1 free on every glove. I will be getting the $1.98 gloves for the driving range and practice though. Might as well buy a few dozen of the mint ProV1x recycled balls as well while I'm at it.

I've never played a scramble that wasn't based on the honor system.

Around here that is how they all are run. 4man teams are paired up always. 2man teams are usually put as goups of 6 (3 teams per teebox). It takes about 5 to 5.5 hours to play a round, but thats how it should be run.

Great for a shag bag but careful with refinished instead of recycled, I have found refinished balls to be pretty hit and miss.

I'm in charge of picking out a full set of golf clubs for a complete beginner as a gift. What specific brands should I be looking at?

I'm thinking the bag setup will be: Driver, 3 wood, 3h, 4h, 5-PW, AW, SW, Putter and then add a bag. Anyone have ideas on good hybrid/iron sets and what sort of Driver/3 wood combo would work well for a beginner? Assuming about a 10.5 degree loft on the driver and regular flex on everything is probably what I am looking for. Guy is about 6' tall and 28 years old. Do I need stiff shafts instead?
