Estimate the number of shots you would instantly shave by henceforth using properly fitted clubs.
If you are struggling to break 100 regardless of clubs, then the actual clubs aren't going to make much of a difference.

Take a scratch golfer and give him a hack set and it might have a bigger impact.

I think proper clubs given the statement could save 3-5 shots. You'd be amazed at what properly fit clubs can do. Older clubs were designed for older balls. Modern balls have different spin rates and dimples so the old drivers are particularly bad....especially if they are dented. Instantly getting better off the tee due to equipment could/would make a HUGE difference.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on my irons. I hit the old Cleveland TA-1s. Love them and hate to part with them.

They're quite a bit older (manufactured in 2000). Do you think that I'm hurting myself by not playing something newer?

It's not as big of an issue with irons, the technology hasn't really changed that much. Multi-layer balls vs. wound balls is part of the issue and they have been engineered to work with the irons, but the drivers have evolved.

It could be worse, I have a friend who still plays with these bad boys:

He's obviously not a serious golfer though and plays once or twice a year.

My first 800 or so rounds (ages 12-25) were played with a set of McGregor irons that were made somewhere in the era of 1977 (according to my father... I can't find a pic of them, but they don't look as old as that according to google... I'll snap a pic off next time I'm at my folks' place), and were given as a gift to my father sometime in the late 80's by a head pro of a course he ran the range for. The club head of the 3-iron came off probably 5 times, the 6-iron is offset, but the rest of the irons aren't, the 7-iron is significantly heavier than all others, especially the 9-iron and PW, which no longer exist, and maybe never did for all I know.

Pretty much spent all of my money as a teen saving up to buy my membership and maybe have a little bit of spending money, then stopped playing pretty much at all from 17-25, mostly due to going to school and not having a big college fund or anything, or being broke from going to school, so I spent those summers working and grinding poker in order to support myself.

I'm doing a bit better now, so I decided it was time again. Bought a used set of Titleist 762s off an acquaintance in March and got back in to golfing a lot this summer (26) after playing 5 or so rounds a year since age 17. Played closer to 25 rounds this past year, plus some trips to the range and simulator. I have absolutely no short game, but I'm hitting the ball better than I ever have, with more control, workability, and distance. Those odd days that the short game does come back around, I'm threatening some nice rounds before having late meltdowns, but I also had my two best 9's ever this year.

I was an 11 hdcp at my best at age 17, and plan on being back to that by fall, but I'd be lucky to be an 18 right now. If I had known that a set of irons from this century was that important back then, I'd have probably just whored myself out for a night or two to a catholic priest and gotten a set of sticks and got a scholarship to play in the states or something.

So I guess that my main point is that I've been anywhere from high-80's to low 100's the last couple years with no short game feel, old clubs and a light bag, where a new set of irons but the same wedges and woods is likely saving me a handful of shots a round. Just not wiring a second shot on a par-5 in to the woods and making a 9 once around is a lot of shots, imo.

Why hasn't anyone ever thought to put a big driver head on a shorter shaft, to use like a 3-wood? Obviously it would be harder to hit off the ground, but I would think even just from the tee box, you would gain a lot by having a 250 club that's easier to hit, particularly if a certain course dialed you back off the tee a little.

Guy on reddit switched 3-wood and 60 deg heads and shafts one day. I'll link it whenever I get my fat ass out of bed and to a PC

Kinda figured that was the case but I thought I'd ask anyways.

Thanks

Bryson DeChambeau practices natural golf and one swing plane. As a result he has EVERY CLUB in his bag from the 4 iron down the same length. He then puts the exact same swing on every shot. Pretty interesting idea really. He's a GREAT player.

Yeah, I've researched that idea. One-Iron golf is a company that sells clubs of all one length. Seems to me the average golfer would benefit from this a lot.

Him and Carlos Ortiz and couple other pros played at the club I work at couple weeks ago and I was their forecaddie.

His irons are also super upright and have giant grips on them, very strange.

TaylorMade has sort of done that with their mini-driver. 2 inches shorter and about 260cc head size. see link.

Oh nevermind... I remembered that I had commented in that thread. Thread is deleted for some reason, but the video is still there. I think I remember him mentioning that he'd make another hitting some with the 3w on the 60* shaft, but I never saw it.

Last year I bought some Ecco's and I love them. They're expensive but well worth it IMO.

Question about rangefinders:

I'm a hack, so don't really need to concern myself with getting a yardage to within 2 yds to a flagstick, but do the newer models work on more or less any type of object? IOW, say I want to know how far it is to the end of a fairway and then how far I need to carry a hazard, can I shoot a rock or a hazard stake or something and still get an accurate reading?
