New thread is generally fine. You'll get better replies too.

Yeah, I've been up to this yearly trip twice so far and did 36 last year, so I've played the course 3 times now. I actually had a really good back-18 last year and shot an 81 (or 83, can't remember). It's definitely up there as one of the best tracks I have ever played and definitely the top of the best conditioned.

Unfortunately it's the only Muskoka course I have played, so I don't know anything about the rock at all. Actually I know one thing about the Rock and that is apparently Faldo was absolutely livid with the end result the first time and the club ended up spending another 6 million dollars to restore it just a year after it was built.

We're really close to bailing tomorrow though, 40mm of rain predicted and I don't want to drive 2 hours for a rain cheque.

Well I tried, I really tried going the whole year without wearing shorts, but it's just too hot to wear pants in 80 degree weather.

Basically I'm trying to figure out just how bad the odds are on the circle par 3 betting holes that go on during scrambles where some "charity" offers you 3:1 or something to hit in the circle.
Broadie, who wrote Every Shot Counts likes to use "Median Leave %" rather than proximity to hole. Median Leave % just tells you that half your shots end up inside X distance.

The Tour average from 100-150 yards is 5.5%, meaning from whatever distance they hit the shot from, half of their shots will be within 5.5% of the starting distance from the hole.

For example, from 150 yards it would look like this.

150 yard shot * 5.5% *3(to convert from yards to feet) = 24.75 feet.

From 125...
125 * 5.5 * 3 = 20.6 feet

For the typical 90's golfer their Median Leave % is 12%. So from 125 yards they hit half of their shots inside 45 feet.

For reference, I am a + handicap and I've basically ShotTracked every round I've played this year, and my Median Leave % from 125-150 yards is ~7%. To take it a step further my top 25% of shots have a leave % of 4.7%. This number gets us a little closer to helping with the charity deal.

So from 150 I will hit 50% of my shots inside 32 feet and 25% of my shots inside 21 feet.

Based on the above, if Tour players and 90s shooters follow roughly the same relationship between their Median leave and 25% leave as I do then from 100-150 their 25% leaves would look something like

Pros- Hit 1 out of 4 shots to 3.7% or from 125 yards 25% would end up inside ~14 feet
90s- Hit 1 out of 4 shots to 8% or from 125 yards 25% would end up inside ~30 feet

So Pro's being offered 3 to 1 to hit it inside 15 feet from 125 yards is a losing proposition. For 90s shooters it is a raping. Move back to 150 yards and it's even more brutal.

The breakeven offer for me would be ~6 to 1 to hit it inside 15 feet from 125 yards. For a 90s shooter it's likely 10 to 1 or more.

So, I'm playing spyglass this afternoon and Pebble Beach tomorrow. I got a caddie and am going to walk the course at pebble. Never had a caddie before trying to figure out a reasonable tip.

Just ask at some point during the round.

If he's working for just tips and does a good job at least $100 IMO.

Personally, I would probably be in the $30-$50 range depending on how good he is, but I have nothing to base that on other that gut feel.

That's for sharing this. What is your average strokes gained putting?

I've been keeping a lot data my last 6 rounds and I have an overall median leave of 8.3%, average and median approach distance is ~150, SGP is -1.71, and current handicap index is 2.8.

In that spot, I always ask them 'what is the minimum you expect, what is the amount that makes you say 'hey, thanks man!' and what would you be super happy with?'

Then tip appropriately according to his or her services.

Keep it simple, if you're in the rough you probably need the 60 and just play the most basic shot you can. Actually I kinda take that back, you probably shouldn't be carrying a 60.

And why would anybody carry both a 54 and 56? My stock numbers with those two would be a whopping 6-7 yards difference.

i totally agree with what you're saying here. keep it simple. also--i spend a ******ed amount of my practice on short game so i'm never out there just guessing. mainly my advice would be to get out there and practice all the possibilities that can come up--then you'll know what shots work for you/you can make. if you're standing over the ball around the green just guessing at what to do....might be a good idea to spend some time practicing...just saying

Ok, so when are we having the 2+2 Open? We all throw in $100, and we play a tournament using 80% of our handicaps. Top 10 get paid out. Who is in?

Front 9 was okay, but the back 9 we decided to play $5 a skin and I saw a totally different side to these (former friendly) players.
I'm okay with a little friendly smack talk but these guys would say stupid **** like 'watch out for the water' just before we would start our backswing. Gtfo.
Wow **** those guys. I would definitely say something if they were talking after I've already addressed the ball.

This is exactly what I did, His response was $40-$60 he expects, $60-$80 makes him happy, and $80+ he is super happy.

I gave him $100 because he made my experience super enjoyable. If you've never played pebble the greens are quite deceiving. there were quite a few times I was looking at a put and thought it went left, he'd look at it and tell me it went right. He was correct every time.

On that note, Shot 90 which I am super happy with. Birdied 7 and made Par on 18 with 2 other pars.

Everyone has got to play it once.
