well my dad plays 98% of his golf there, so i tell him he should always try to buy everything off the pro (and i do too) especially since it is usually the same prices as golf galaxy or etc. I worked in a golf shop but never had purview of those kinds of issues of shop credit etc. I also feel kind of bad because everytime there is a tournament the pro offers a game on a shortish par 3 that if you hit the green you double your money ...I.e. you put 75$ down you get 150$ in shop credit if you hit the green if not you just get 75$ in shop credit. i always feel bad about doing this and then buying balls or something.

We did this in high school. Our JV and Varsity teams would pool together to do 27 holes of a Ryder Cup format. Good fun

Not really sure what to think of this. I guess props to Gary Player for doing this?

I use my 3 hybrid here about 90% of the time. Quick little punch with pretty good control.

Completely standard.

But on the sideways punchouts I've always tried the lob wedge pitch (if I can keep it under tree canopies) or just putted it if the canopies are low. I'll try the long to mid iron next time and just try to pop it out. As I said, controlling distance through grass is not easy and this will probably help me.
Just use a 7 or 8 iron and play it back in your stance with your hands forward. Will have the effective loft of a much longer iron. Then hit it about as hard as you would the same shot with the putter. The benefit of using an iron is you get the loft to get it traveling in the air and not through the rough, even if it's only for a short period of time (like a bump and run chip).

Totally standard marky. Shop is still making $ off of the purchase so there is no reason to feel like a dick.

The greatest putter who ever lived told me he wished that he had my putting stroke at my age.

Spoiler:
Beat: He was the self proclaimed goat putter and I have no way of confirming this fact. I, for one, choose to believe him.

I have played in a Ryder Cup style event every year for the past 10 or so with 16-24 people. What questions did you have?

I have determined that there exists a mental block in my brain with regards to Par 3's.

Put me 160 out on a par 5 and I can hit the green the majority of the time. Put me on the tee box of a 160 yard par 3 and the ball sprays right the vast majority of the time. Distance is right but I just cannot hit the green. I would shave 2-3 strokes a round if I could just figure this out.

1. Take out your change and put it in your left hand pocket
2. Tie your left shoe in a double knot
3. Turn your hat around backwards
4. Stick your tee behind your left ear
5. Hit the damn ball

You're welcome.

If you tee it up, try not teeing it up

I do tee it up, just barely above the ground though

I was going to suggest the same thing. Just pull it out of your pocket, drop it on the deck, and find a good spot for it...just like you'd do on the range.

Or make sure you complete your backswing (or do a mini-pause at the top of your backswing). Sounds like you are anxious on par 3s and probably rush your swing. I speak from experience.

Guessing some sort of confirmation bias vs a real difference in quality of shots hit.

I don't see what a tee might have to do with this.

Something like this. I know when I miss right, it's usually because I'm trying to guide it to the target instead of taking an aggressive swing through the ball towards the target. It's a tentative swing so everything's a little late and the club face stays open.

trying to replicate the feeling of being on a fairway and not the 'formal', potentially over-thought shot of being on a tee box.

Problem is sometimes this isn't enough to get out and other times it pops out and skips across the fairway to the other side.

Should I be hitting this shot more like a chip? Feet close, open stance, ball back in stance, and have more of a popping stroke down on the ball? I'm thinking this may help the ball check up a bit if it wants to scoot across the fairway. And the pop may help it traverse more of the grass rather than trudge through it.

Advice appreciated.
I don't think popping down on it is going to give you any sort of check on it that makes any real difference. I assume you putt it because it's a lot easier to "not chunk it 5 yards or blade it 100 yards", so I would just stick with the putt. I think putting from all over the place is a great idea. It's another club in the bag so why not take advantage of it?

I putt from weird spots quite a bit and I think half the battle is accepting mentally that what you are doing is not stupid. It's just like any other shot...if you practice it/accept it, you can become very good at it.

Yeaaaa, I don't buy it. Either he's overestimating the amount of times he puts it on otherwise or is taking a different approach on par 3's.

Meh depends on the person. Id bet I hit more greens on par 3s without teeing it up. Im also no hack either. I just dont practice hitting irons off tees on the driving range so Im not as comfortable doing it on the golf course. Definitely a personal thing but for sure can potentially benefit others

If you are doing something different when the ball is teed up, you're doing it wrong.

I have a question about GIR, I landed softly on the green in two on this par 4, my friend just off the green, on his third shot he worm burned it knocking my ball off the green. Do I lose my greens in regulation?
