Problem is sometimes this isn't enough to get out and other times it pops out and skips across the fairway to the other side.
Should I be hitting this shot more like a chip? Feet close, open stance, ball back in stance, and have more of a popping stroke down on the ball? I'm thinking this may help the ball check up a bit if it wants to scoot across the fairway. And the pop may help it traverse more of the grass rather than trudge through it.
Advice appreciated.
I don't think popping down on it is going to give you any sort of check on it that makes any real difference. I assume you putt it because it's a lot easier to "not chunk it 5 yards or blade it 100 yards", so I would just stick with the putt. I think putting from all over the place is a great idea. It's another club in the bag so why not take advantage of it?
I putt from weird spots quite a bit and I think half the battle is accepting mentally that what you are doing is not stupid. It's just like any other shot...if you practice it/accept it, you can become very good at it.
