Anyone have any suggestions on good, not too pricey irons?

Also, do irons also need to be stiff with high swing speeds?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Anything over 95mph with the driver you will want stiff most likely in all your clubs. Id check out golfwrx in the classifieds section. You can probably get a better deal there on used irons than anywhere else.

edit: How much are you looking to spend. Here is a great set I feel like for 319 brand new

So I'm not sure what to do. Every time I go out to play it takes me 3 or 4 holes to really get my swing right, but after that I have been doing very well. This is an especially large problem because I usually only have time to play 9 holes at a time, so a lot of times almost half of the round is wasted hacking the ball around trying the feel for my swing back. My home course does not have a driving range, so that isn't really an option. Anybody have any tips that seem to help you deal with this stuff? It's just really frustrating to me- I can't even get myself to actually keep score because of it. A lot of times I would be taking either a triple or quad on the first couple holes, which just totally ruins the notion of keeping score for me.

Before you play, take the time to chip and putt, I'm sure there is room for that. Then after stretching, imagine the shot you are going to hit starting on the first tee and rehearse and make that swing. Change to your approach club and do the same. Play a few holes like that and that should get you in the groove a little quicker when you start your round.

Didn't feel like cluttering up the Masters thread, but my Mom's boss went to the Masters and my Mom decided to have him pick up an early (five months early) birthday present for me:

Apparently The Masters' famously low concessions prices don't extend to the merchandise. $65 for a shirt!?

Thank you breakyourneck. Yeah, i have a stiff driver, so i guess i should go with stiff irons also. What i meant was, does iron also have a stiff flex,( like, its iron, how can that be of different flex?) That set looks nice, unfortunately i am in europe. So golfbidder is my best option i think.

I see alot of cheap mizuno and titleist or ping irons also. What are the lines for lower handicappers? Like i have no idea if the i20 or g 20 is better for low players.

do you do practice swings?, and yeah, probably try some pitching/chipping, its not a full swing, but at least it gets you the feeling for hitting something solid.

i guess theres not mucht you cant do accept, maybe go to the range more often instead of playing, so you will develop a better feel without warming up first?

Yeah they make stiff irons and reg flex irons and there is a noticeable difference for sure. You are going to want something forgiving. Ping makes a pretty forgiving club. You want to stay away from blades and even probably forged clubs. If you find a set you are thinking of, post it here and we can let you know. I will go on golfbidder today and see what I can find. How much are you looking to spend?

Pelican, this isn't meant to take away from the gift, just add context around prices, but that was likely the cheapest shirt they sold. Their brand in a solid ftw. I would guess the average shirt price (this is coming from someone who has never been fwiw, although am very familiar with merchandising these type events) was north of $75-$80.

From everything I have read on wrx and talking to my local pro that just got back I heard alot of shirts were priced 105$

The cheapest golf shirts were $70, some were above $100. Standard caps were $24. All soft goods were marked up considerably, the rest of the merchandise seemed to be priced fair.

Thinking of stuff we carry in our shop

Cheapest shirt is like $55(Oxford, great shirts) and most expensive is $95(Ralph Lauren)

So $65 doesn't seem all that ridiculous to me.

Standard policy at our golf shop on soft goods is 100% mark up. I assume it is probably the same for you guys

Keystoning all soft goods is standard. But I was thinking the Masters apparel was a bit above that, could be wrong.

Can you give me an idea of highest / lowest marked-up items in a Pro Shop?

clubs, specifically drivers have pretty low mark ups

soft goods are the highest

our course marks up all clubs 15% over cost. If its been there a while you can haggle for lower price. Like most mentioned soft goods marked up close to 100%. Good end of the year sale is when I buy the soft goods. shirts go down from $55.00 to $20.00

Thats very kind of you. Will let you know if i find something. But those taylormades look really nice. Might even go for that. Think my budget is somewhere between 200-350. But to be honest i might even spend less because i can get new clubs faster. Im a broke student so i have to save up some money first. Hoping to buy some next month or so. Especially with the weather getting better now. Thanks for your answers.

PS: one more question haha, i saw some very cheap clubs for only 150 euros or something, but they were from 2004, how wise is it to get clubs that old. Have clubs changed alot or do they have the same forgivingness?

I am actually playing these irons right now. For a slight cavity back, they have a nice looking top edge on them, for those who want the look of a blade, but still want a little forgiveness. I originally bought them used at Golf Galaxy for $300 about 4-5 years ago and they were in great shape, but they have seen their days in the past year or so.

As for the technology, I think iron technology has changed, but not to the degree that drivers have in the past 6 years. I think investing in something maybe a year or two newer like 08 or 09 would be better. You will also be able to get these for pretty cheap as well. As always try to get fit for your specs. before buying too.

Good Luck.

Either of these would be fine. 160 euros and 164 euros. Can probably find you something cheaper too that would be similar just older

Question showed up to the course today junior golf pro asked if I was going to go play.

Told him i was going to practice.

He later came down to the chipping area and gave me some pointers on my form. Should I expect a bill, should I have tipped him, just no idea what the etiquette is in that spot.

Definitely don't expect a bill, doubtful he expects a tip. It's up to you if you'd like to tip him. Would say the standard is most don't tip in that scenario.

Thanks. I figured a bill would be an outlier but not sure about tip.
