Any specific recommendations? I live up in Garland/Richardson. Firewheel is in my backyard but the membership is like $270/month and it tends to get crowded on weekends so I wouldn't really gain anything.
My parents are thinking of moving to that area so I've been checking on places.

Waterview is reasonable and nice. And much easier to get to now with the new bush turnpike completed.

Woodbridge is a little farther and nice.

Not really sure there's much else in the area though. Its all muni's with Sherrill Park, Pecan Hollow, Firewheel, etc.

Since I'm under the age of 30, I pay about $150 a month in dues with no initiation fee.

Obviously there are plenty of places that are super pricey but there are a lot of deals out there too. It's also a good time to explore joining because courses have little leverage / shrinking memberships and you might be able to negotiate a hard bargain.

Check out "public"/"daily fee" courses too. Sometimes they'll have memberships/annual plans.
We have a similar deal (although not anywhere near as good as UCB's deal). A lot of the clubs in this area have gone either public or daily fee/restricted access. The club we joined is still purely private and is, in my view, ahead of the curve on being aggressive with recruiting new members and pricing it in a way that makes it accessible. For about $300/month we get full family golf and of course access to the pool and other amenities.

They are running a "six month trial membership" deal as an incentive. We have no food minimum during the six months (savings of $60/month) and get a $250 statement credit and 3 golf guest passes. Altogether it is a savings of about $700 over the first six months. Also, no initiation fee unless you want to have a voting share.

Unlimited range access, carts, bag storage are extra fees which helps keep the monthly fee low. It's a very walkable course and most members either carry or use pushcarts and the average round is still under 4 hours.

If you don't continue the membership after the 6 month trial period, you can't join for 12 months, so they have protected themselves from that angle shot.

In contrast, two historically very exclusive clubs in the area that never waived their initiation fee have in the past year allowed public access to the golf course and restaurant and have "merged" so that members at one have access at the other. They are basically public now. Being a member allows unlimited golf and preferred advance tee times but the course is getting more and more crowded and two people I know are quitting there and joining where I just joined because they no longer have the freedom to play the course on a whim like they used to.

Weather is improving, [insert Bart Scott can't wait!]

The greatest appeal of golf to me is that it presents a lifelong challenge....the mental game is so important. I love that aspect of the game.

Anyway, I am thinking of buying new irons and have been searching craigslist. I found a set of Hogan Apex Steel Stiff irons for a very affordable price. The affordable part is important to me. Is playing this set foolish? I am about a 17 handicap I believe. I have been hitting my current CBs very well this season, and think if I want to improve I may want to get clubs with more feedback. I am totally willing to take a step back in scoring in the meanwhile.

Thoughts greatly appreciated.
I have a set of Apex blades. difficult to hit. However after using them for two seasons my ball striking improved dramatically. I have since gone back to CBs but they have minimal off set, a thin top line and have that blade look at address. Good luck.

assuming it was done well wrt handicapping/payouts/etc... would you guys do that?
sounds fun. I would participate.

I mentioned that to the pro and his response "call us first, but unless we have an outing, which will be on the calendar and almost always on Monday, we'll get you out there. Worst case we'll jump in a cart and drive you over to the 11th tee and you can play in from there if that's where there's a gap in the groups out there." If that plays out in practice I'll be in heaven. Very excited about this season.
cool, while I belong to a public course, I enjoy private courses in the area with members. none of the private courses take cash. So I like to get there early eat a nice lunch, get some beers buy a cuban cigar, and charge it all to my host. When he gets the bill he screams, but I keep getting invited back. I do take care of him when I take him to my course.

Yeah -- keep in mind that this is in a smaller municipality in Ohio so not a huge market by any means and cost of living is fairly low.

Of course, the genius in me lives full time in Chicago but belongs in a club back in Dayton 300 miles away :/

Anyone have views/experience on shortening a putter? Can you just remove the grip, chop off a bit and put a new grip back on or are there weight/balance issues to consider? (It's a blade (Ping Anser) putter if that matters).

I've done some googling, but that gives everything from "lol, doesn't matter, chop away" answers to "omg NO! putter will be ruined and unusable!".

When putting now, my bottom hand is on the metal rather than the grip, so I'm thinking I should either shorten my putter or work on changing my stance. Perhaps Garrigus will lend me his old one now that he's switched...

There is a weight/balance issue but I'm not exactly sure what your supposed to do to shorten the shafts where you don't run into that.

Yea, I was going to see my pro about getting new grips on my clubs anyway, so I'll ask about cutting down the putter at the same time.

i got mine shortened to 29.5 inches. the guy just removed the grip and chopped it off the end. if there are any adverse effects i haven't noticed any.

yeah just remove grip, cut it off, new grip.

If you cut off a lot, you could maybe add some weight back somewhere. Just try it for a while and if it seems really light, add some weight.

Cutting off the the top of the shaft will make the swing weight heavier thus changing the feel, mostly making the clubhead feel heavier.

Also, going down to Florida tomorrow to hang out with my Fam for the weekend.

Get in at 9 AM, play trump international in West Palm.

10:30 AM Friday play medalist (anyone played it?)

9 AM Saturday, lesson with my favorite instructor for 2 hours, then golf at what's formerly the Jupiter ritz (now owned by trump). Same course Sunday.

Really looking forward to playing... only played 3 rounds since the start of November

tough weekend.

Not overly daunting, but always in great shape

Not really sure what you are questioning?

The swing weight is "The measurement of a golf club's weight about a fulcrum point which is established at a specified distance from the grip end of the club."

If you cut off 1" at the top of the shaft, you alter the swing weight, the balance point in the shaft moves closer to the head thus making the head "feel" heavier during the swing.

Swing weight and actual weight of the club are totally different things.

Cutting the shaft will lower the swing weight, not raise it.

I'm not a club repair expert or anything but it is my understanding that the closer to the head the balance point in a club moves the heavier the swing weight is. So if you cut off 1" of the shaft, the balance point is going to move closer to the head(to offset the mass you lost from the cut off shaft) thus making the swing weight heavier. Is that wrong?

I'm no expert either, but I'm pretty sure shortening a shaft lightens the SW.

Nxt,

You're correct about the fulcrum moving closer to the head, but the overall length of the club being shorter more than offsets that effect. When the length of club is reduced, weight needs to be added to the head to keep the same swing weight. Another way to accomplish this is by going to a lighter weight grip.

Yea, looks like shortening does lower the swing weight. Seems a bit counter-intuitive to me bc it seems like that would make the head feel heavier aka more swing weight.
