I'm digging the golfs so far.
I'm in Chicago and I'm just learning, so if you wanna play sometime, let me know. Same for you, DrOldSchool.

Today I played in the yearly 'breast cancer awareness' match, abtly named the pink cup. Until the year before last, it has been a women only match, but they may have discovered that they get more money by including men. Scored beyond horribly, didn't win anything in the lottery. But I ought to have gotten a prize for using a pink pen for the scorecard. Played with two other males and a very cute female. Unfortunately she later played the husband card. Sigh!

This is hugely significant. If your shaft can't keep up with your swing on the driver, you will baloon them right even with great swings.

You really don't need a video camera, any digital camera that can record video will handle your swing no problem. Just get a friend to take a couple of shots.

Get those videos up and let's discuss some more of the specific problems with your irons and driver, although it seems like there is an obvious fix needed for your driver shaft. Start a new thread when you get this together as well.

Beat: Cotton.

I was late getting on the "performance fabric" bandwagon, but I bought a bunch of Dri-fit type shirts at the end of last year and have liked them.

Wore an old cotton polo today. WTF. It wasn't even hot and it was still disgusting. I used to wear these all the time?

Never again, at least not when the temp is over 65.

I jumped away from cotton as SOON as possible. From my competitive badminton days, we were all really happy when the new fabrics came out...they took a little longer to get into golf. But, as soon as they were into golf, it's the only type of shirt that I'll wear unless it's the winter.

City Couple's tournament came and went today without my participation. My wife " hurt her wrist." She even made a doctors appointment for Thursday and got a steroid shot to prove how "hurt" she was. Bitch.

I've bought a Layertech sleveless shirt to wear under a polo to help keep you cool, not sure about it, though. Has any of you guys any experience with these?

Be carefull, her wrist may come back in better shape, allowing her to slap your face harder

hey guys,

i just took my first lesson ever borrowing a friend's mizuno irons. as a beginner, what kind of clubs should i be looking for? a pre-owned cleveland/taylormade set of irons and add woods/putters as i get better is what ive been told by people so far. theres a golfsmith 15 minutes away from my place but judging from this forum ebay is probably better? i also have heard borrow/steal is even better. all advice is welcome

thanks

Brand doesn't really matter. Just get "game-improvement" clubs. Like hybrids for your long irons and a draw-biased driver if you slice.

Have a small question that I might as well ask here since I don't have a lesson for a bit.

I finally figured out why I was slicing like 1/2 the time with my driver. It's weird I don't do this with any other club. I would take it back on a good plane, rotate shoulders hips etc... But right near the end I was actually moving my hips laterally ~6 inches towards my right foot. Then when I started my downswing from there I was coming down on a differnt plane all together that was outside/in. Hit a bucket of balls today. Zero slices, and was maxing out around 300yds with the majority coming in around 260-290. I did hit about 20% weird though, getting under them or something, and only going 150-200yds. Dunno why exactly yet.

To my question. Should I keep my hips completly still laterally on the backswing? or is it ok if I move them that 6 inches laterally, and make sure I get them back to where they started before I begin my downswing, and hip turn?

I wouldn't say keep them real stiff or don't move them at all. But don't be moving 6 inches, that's a lot.

I mean, an inch or two is ok, just so you don't feel like you're stuck in cement.

Thanks, I started trying that near the end. At the start I was just doing my normal backswing, then getting my hips back before begining the downswing. I'll keep trying not moving them much.

I watched some of Tiger woods swings. And man, his lower body doesn't move at all. Looks like his legs are set in stone.

Thanks. I found a pre-owned set of TaylorMade R7 XD for $399 from golfsmith. The condition is okay. I've read some reviews and said it's a good set and very forgiving. What do you guys think?

I would just like to post that I hit my new 47 inch fubuki xstiff callaway ft-9 tour 9.5 degree well yesterday for the first time and it is sooooo awesome.

There is a reachable par 5 on my course that is usually a driver/5 wood, sometimes a 3 wood, or every once in a while if the wind is behind, I can hit a hybie.

I hit Driver to 225 (pin was in front so 206 to the front) and hit 4 iron onto the fringe from there. No wind what so ever.

Then there is another hole where I usually hit driver/456 iron to. I had 148 to the center.

Or another hole which is usually driver/8 iron or so is now driver/gap wedge.
I really must be about 25-30 yards longer than with my other driver and the only thing I have to remember is that the power is within and there is no reason to try and kill it everytime.

Have any of you ever read Tommy Angelo's 'Elements of Poker"? I find a lot of the topics very applicable to golf.. It has helped my golf game more than my poker game.

So I randomly met a couple of guys while playing a practice round a few weeks ago at Coyote Creek here in San Jose. It turns out that one of the guys is responsible for shooting varmints on the course like wild pigs and squirrels and gets free golf for him and his friends there and at Boulder Ridge, which is a pretty swanky private course in the area. So I guess I come across as a fish because they invited me into their regular skins game and I've since gotten 3 free rounds at Coyote out of the deal, (well almost free as I've been a loser for $25-$30 every time.) My game's starting to come around though as yesterday I had 3 birdies in the 24 holes that we played, hopefully having something to play for regularly will force me to continue to improve my ballstriking and short game.

Today we're playing at Boulder Ridge, which should be awesome because the course is closed the last Monday of the month for maintenance and we'll have it all to ourselves....
