hendrix23,

I'd suggest trying out the feet-together drill and just swinging the club back and forth...back and forth. Momentum should be taking the club back on a natural plane, and gravity with a hip turn should be pulling it back until you start to provide more power with your upper body turn through impact.

Also, I've never seen those eHow videos, and maybe you like them (to each his own), but I would suggest checking out Shawn Clement's videos on YouTube. They go into much more detail and I think he explains things better than anyone else I've seen online. They are also longer with less ads.

Here's his video on the feet together drill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AXReWUx4Cg

And here's a list of all his videos: http://web.mac.com/shawnclement/Site...ube_Shawn.html

arbuthnot.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out when I head out to the range today. I've watched a few of Shawn's videos before, he helped me a ton with my putting, but I just stumbled upon these vids yesterday.

Last night I was swinging in my computer room, and noticed that I could see my reflection in the glass patio sliding doors behind me. So I taped up a shaft line to the glass, and I think I found the correct plane. I was actually doing it correctly with my 90% of my clubs after putting the shoulder dip in there but I was right in that I was leaning forward with the driver quite a bit for some reason.

Was playing in a tournament on saturday. Long par 3, thick rough on the leftside of the green. One of the guys I was playing with hit in there. He walks in the rough, steps on his ball, immediatly picks it up, places it back and plays his shot without adding a penalty stroke.....is this correct?

He said the ruling changed as of last year, I didn't hear of it.

Quote:
Rule 12 Searching for and Identifying Ball

12-1. Searching for Ball; Seeing Ball
In searching for his ball anywhere on the course, the player may touch
or bend long grass, rushes, bushes, whins, heather or the like, but only
to the extent necessary to find and identify it, provided that this does
not improve the lie of the ball, the area of his intended stance or swing
or his line of play.

A player is not necessarily entitled to see his ball when making a stroke.
In a hazard, if a ball is believed to be covered by loose impediments or
sand, the player may remove by probing or raking with a club or
otherwise, as many loose impediments or as much sand as will enable
him to see a part of the ball. If an excess is removed, there is no
penalty and the ball must be re-covered so that only a part of it is
visible. If the ball is moved during the removal, there is no penalty; the
ball must be replaced and, if necessary, re-covered. As to removal of
loose impediments outside a hazard, see Rule 23-1.

If a ball lying in or on an obstruction or in an abnormal ground condition
is accidentally moved during search, there is no penalty; the ball must
be replaced, unless the player elects to proceed under Rule 24-1b,
24-2b or 25-1b as applicable. If the player replaces the ball, he may still
proceed under Rule 24-1b, 24-2b or 25-1b if applicable.
If a ball is believed to be lying in water in a water hazard, the player may
probe for it with a club or otherwise. If the ball is moved in probing, it
must be replaced, unless the player elects to proceed under Rule 26-1.
There is no penalty for causing the ball to move, provided the
movement of the ball was directly attributable to the specific act of
probing. Otherwise, the player incurs a penalty stroke under Rule 18-2a.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 12-1:
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

-----------------------------------------------

Rule 18 Ball at rest moved

18-2. By Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment

a. General

When a player’s ball is in play, if:
(i) the player, his partner or either of their caddies lifts or moves it,
touches it purposely (except with a club in the act of addressing it)
or causes it to move except as permitted by a Rule, or
(ii) equipment of the player or his partner causes the ball to move,
the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. If the ball is moved, it must be
replaced, unless the movement of the ball occurs after the player has
begun the stroke or the backward movement of the club for the stroke
and the stroke is made.

Under the Rules there is no penalty if a player accidentally causes his
ball to move in the following circumstances:
• In searching for a ball in a hazard covered by loose impediments
or sand, for a ball in an obstruction or abnormal ground condition
or for a ball believed to be in water in a water hazard – Rule 12-1
• In repairing a hole plug or ball mark – Rule 16-1c
• In measuring – Rule 18-6
• In lifting a ball under a Rule – Rule 20-1
• In placing or replacing a ball under a Rule – Rule 20-3a
• In removing a loose impediment on the putting green – Rule 23-1
• In removing movable obstructions – Rule 24-1
It doesn't seem to be correct what your mate is saying.

He is not in an abnormal ground condition or in/on a obstruction.

I took a trip to N.Ireland over the past two weeks for a wedding, so obviously the clubs travel with me.
I had a tee-time booked at Royal Portrush, probably one of the toughest links courses in the world. It was an expensive day, but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Anyway, I pull up to the course and i'm absolutely elated that i'm there. Reach in my bag and pull out the camera to take a picture of the first hole and my camera flashes a message across the screen "Please change your battery pack". F*ck. I had just charged those batteries, guess they're duds now. So I hop in my car and drive up to a gas station and purchase 4 more gold-top energizers. I get back to the course and load them in my camera, "Please change your battery pack". The guy sold me duds! I golfed on a course *this* close to heaven and don't have a single picture to prove it.

Anyway, the golf course was fantastic but a truly challenging 18 holes of golf. It was a good thing I had a caddie, as I only lost about 3 balls, but it probably would have been a dozen if I didn't have him with me. If you're ever in Northern Ireland, don't pass on an opportunity to play it!

Random equipment question:

Although I will probably not change my irons anytime soon, I've lately been curious - thanks to this forum - about how I'd hit something with less offset than my Eye2s.

Any suggestions for what to check out? Can be current models or a few years old. The only criterion is minimal offset, I really don't have any defined preferences otherwise. I hit the ball well enough to not need super game improvement clubs but am probably marginal for blades (since this is a goof, blades are fine).

Replying to myself because I'm bored:

I've read on a couple other boards today that Golf Galaxy has some pretty good closeout deals right now - demo sets of Mizuno irons for less than $300 etc. I might have to go over there & check it out.

On a completely unrelated note, I actually got hit by a golf ball recently. I can't remember the last time that happened. Playing #12, a par 4 on the back nine at Arcadia Bluffs. We had a group of young douchebags re-rounding behind us and were planning on letting them go through on the next hole. We spent a couple minutes looking for a wayward shot to the right of the green - no way we were clear. I found the ball and walked over to the cart to pull my putter, incoming - one bounce off the cart path right into my chest.

Lucked out, though, no "Titleist" tattoo left behind.

Talk about MISC/RANDOM/BS...I was trying to read through the stripper thread in BBV4L. She said her implants were 400cc. I'll never look at my driver the same way again.

Question.

I've been working on my short game around the green lately. I'de consider myself a pretty solid chipper when I'm close to the green. But by far my worst shot on the golf course is when I have a mediocre lie in some sticky inconsistant rough about 10-15 yards from the green and only have 5-10 yards to work with on the green.

I hardly ever seem to get consistant contact on the ball there. A lot of the time it comes out low, or left right and end up short still in the rough, or well past the hole on the wrong line.

Right now I have a PW, and a 52* wedge. Today I experimented opening up my stance, and some flop shots, but I couldn't aim that well (70% 2 putt territory) and still ~20% ended up not making the green. But that was perfect conditions with nice grass around the chipping green. Not a thin-ish lie.

Anyways. Hopefully someone has some advice. Kinda sick of putting up 4 strokes from 10-20 yards out. I looked around for some video's, but every single one shows easy chips 1 yard off the green propped up nicely on the 2nd cut with tons of green to work with.

blade a sand wedge for this shot...pretty much auto two putt...basically take a putting stroke with a sand wedge and hit it at the equator of the ball.

this

and for those shots out of the rough, get a 56-58* wedge and open the face, open your stance, and use a long flowing swing. John Daly does this perfectly imo.

What kind of bounce rating should I be looking at for lies that are down in the grass kinda thin, but in chunky-ish rough? Lie seems to come up often at my regular courses.

Or turn your putter (if it isn't a mallet) 90 degrees and use the putter-toe-jab-shot hah

If you frequently get "thin" lies I'd def go with lower bounce (less than 10*)

FWIW, I sent a question to The Wedge Guy who has a blog over at oobgolf.com and asked him how to aim open-faced wedge shots. This was his reply:

in the beginning i got regular lessons and now i get about 1 lesson a month when i need advice on things to start adding to my swing / my game and more stuff to practice.

equipment -- need a new driver to match current swing speed etc etc, but other than that is fine.

basicly im a complete golf fanatic. when i get a bit more money around xmas ill buy a video camera and start posting swing for help.

for now i worked through shanks by shifting weight to left foot...for whatever reason i was keeping it all on the back and my arms would go through but nothing else (random as *** as this is suppose to lead to a pull hook, but i guess i was doing some scoop action or something to make up for that and it was causing me to shank)

its been a bad bad bad bad two weeks, but i have a good match tommorow and feel pretty good.

flop shot

on thin lies, use a club w/ less bounce. Go get a 60 for F sake!

Whats up, golf cheese thread! I'm a gholfer now! My company bought me a set of golf clubs for my 10 year anniversary, which I got around Christmas time. I'm taking lessons at GolfTec and have played about 6 9-hole rounds on public courses in Chicago so far. I'm obviously terrible, but getting better. I can actually hit the ball sometimes!

I'm digging the golfs so far.
