Blows my mind that someone who had covid is not getting a negative test before going out with other people. Okay after a decent while I guess no prob, but why would u not get the neg? Very weird. And yea that would not go down well in my groups.

If I was in charge of running a somewhat busy group of couple of dozen golfers I´d prolly go mad. Or at least be a dick bunch of times.

I can't imagine ever playing with that guy again.
And I've had quite a few real *******s in regular groups before.

just by this phrase alone i wonder if you have a history with SW&W, and specifically with a particular wise old barrister that i've heard frequently use it.

Moving conversation from "What'd you Shoot?" thread....

Scott posted this pic of a line he took:

Redeyes posted this one, with commentary about how yellow circled house has signs complaining threatening a lawsuit for damage on their property:

I've made this post a long, long time ago, but the conversation reminded me of this hole on the course I grew up on:

On my image, tee box is green "x". Hitting a decent drive down the middle, you end up around the yellow dot. Alternatively, you USED to be able to hit over the tree marked with a red "x". If you were aggressive but somewhat conservative, you could go for the landing spot marked 2, which is a heavy downslope that can kick you down towards the green (it slopes a lot starting around the bunker). If you were feeling reckless, and many, MANY players did, you aim for one, purposefully trying to hit the road. If done on a relatively straight path, the curvature of all things would more than likely kick your ball down to the green or on it. This was a somewhat busy road and you could only see part of what was coming.

Connecting to the ScottC and Redeyes post, in my 100,000 foot legal opinion, if ScottC were to take that line and the ball somehow flew into someone's back yard and killed them, he is arguably liable because he made the conscious decision to take that line, and was negligent in doing so. Same with my hole: if you try to cut the road but ended up hitting a car and causing an accident, I'd argue you're liable. (Of course, in both scenarios you'd need proof it was a conscious decision...without more, ScottC just says he missed it; ignoring testifying under oath and the like).

However, if Redeyes were to aim for the fairway and shank one into Yellow Houses windows, I'd argue strongly he's NOT liable. As one court has said, a golfer is not "negligent" or liable if all they did was "make an inept tee shot."

Anyway, my remote access system is down and I can't access the things I need to, so here's this random post on golfer liability.

I’ve hit a fair number of houses in the past 10 years but it’s not often I flight my ball over a house intentionally.

Red eyes’ post doesn’t make sense if that layout is dead straight, they have signs warning people not to hit a slice? Lol

My understanding of the general liability is you have to act negligently like Hey Porter said meaning you don’t exercise the standard of care that a reasonable golfer would. Intentionally hitting it into the street might even be reckless (worse than negligent) unless you’re playing a top flite that won’t get scuffed.

When I get the pic from the tee box you will be able to see basically the 4 results that happen when I take that line.

1. It turns out like it did yesterday.

2. The same line happens like it did yesterday, but right before you "land back on the course" you hit the giant trees that are along the OB line and drop down in the scrub or a back yard.

3. I take the same line and cut the ball that ends back on the golf course.

4. You hit the top of the tree right off of the tee and it drops on a back yard early or it takes all of the steam off of the ball and it lands (relatively softly) on a roof.

Lol at a road being a tempting spot to aim at, can def see people taking that line too.

It's the way the road feeds that makes it inviting. It's a pretty wide road, especially at the corner, and the way it angles it is always bouncing right towards the fairway, or straight. The straight bounces will keep bouncing, with a very good shot off at least bouncing back in bounds.

Speaking of hitting over (or into) houses.

Second last round of the year for me the other week, coworker teed off first on 18 and sliced it high and right into a very strong wind. Houses line the right side of the hole. We saw the ball head into some backyards, unsure exactly how far it went, but it definitely caromed upwards and left, almost like it hit the top of a patio or an awning or something. I hit second and hit a low bullet up the right fenceline, but it appeared that I didn't get into a backyard from our vantage on the tee.

We get up there and a lady was already in the backyard, phone and notepad and pen, and several golf balls in hand, looking distressed and asking for our information. Her lower basement window definitely had a golfball come through it and she was agitated. She clearly had grabbed a few of the golf balls that were lying in the backyard -- some of the neighboring yards had several in them too, no surprise -- but she wasn't holding my coworkers golf ball that he could identify. Anyways she claimed it just happened, and it is quite likely it was my partner that did the damage. My coworker gave his information to be nice and by the time we checked the clubhouse to discuss the situation the pro had already had a call from her.

Seems pretty easy to pull a fast one. The window could have been hit at any point during the day, and someone could just be waiting for a golfer to finally hit one in that general vicinity and then pin it on them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the course doesn't really get involved, if any compensation passes hands it is between the golfer and the homeowner. The RCGA in Canada includes window insurance with a small deductible so in the end it's not a big deal but I had never actually been in a group where somebody plunked one into a window (supposedly).

I always wonder about this too. Could easily have been someone else. I mean, you live on a golf course, you gotta expect this to happen.

Living on a golf course where my backyard is in reachable distance does not seem appealing to me.

We have a course here with houses very much in play along the right side and there is an old woman who I swears just sits outside all day to yell at anyone who comes even remotely close to the house lol

lol, there was someone on the right side of a hole that sits right in the driver range at mu course. Someone was looking for their ball and he pulled a gun on them. Cops called, etc. He ended up selling the house and the person living there now is friendly as can be. He doesn't care if you search around, lol.

No clue about Canada, but my take is nearly anywhere in the US your friend isn't responsible (per above). She lives on a damn golf course. Her insurance will cover it.

That was my thought too, home insurance while living on a course must include some sort of reasonable deductible for window coverage.

We were playing the course via a corporate booking, our company has passes at the course so it wouldn't have been a good look for us if we tried to argue with her and not give our information. But like others above I haven't even been sure what those "Golf balls are the responsibility of the golfer" signs really entail.

In legal terms golf courses can print anything they want on the receipt like "golfers are responsible for and and all damage to residences" and it doesn't mean ****. Similar to baseballs flying into the stands. They cant get rid of their liability by just writing words.

OK time for a list. Name your 5 best shots you have ever hit. Mine are:

1. I guess my #1 is 5 iron from 206y for the albatross.

2. 17 on Bethpage Black - Hit 3 wood from 220y dead into the teeth of a 20+mph wind to 1 foot.

3. 5 iron tee shot on Bandon Trails hole #6. Playing downwind I flew the crossbunker sitting about 200y off the tee and found the speed slot that rolled right by the next cross bunker 275y off the tee and stopped just short of the bunker along the left side leaving myselfwith bout 60 yards to the green after the 305y drive.

4. Sawgrass #17 tee shot to about 7 or 8 feet.

5. Tee shot at Soldier Hollow in Utah. Caught the downslope around 340y off the tee and had a 30 yard pitch left into the 450y hole.

Dunno if I can pick five, but I'll give it a shot.

1. Tee shot on a par 3 at my former home course. About 145 yards, very elevated tee. Flew a short iron into the bottom of the cup. Unfortunately for me, it came back out, deflected off the stick and off the green. Closest I've ever been to a hole in one and I ended up with a par.

2. Second shot on #18 at my former home course. Brutally difficult hole, 420 yard par 4, dogleg right, tight and forested off the tee. I hit a good drive but still had 190+ left to a back pin. Stuck a long iron to 6 feet so I had two putts to shoot even par for the first time.

3. Long iron on a par 5 that stopped one single revolution short of an albatross. Closest I've ever come. Dead on line the whole way.

4. Tee shot, 17th at St. Andrews. Striped over the corner of the Old Course Hotel just like they say to do.

5. Tough to choose another. I can think of a few hole outs from the fairway for eagles, chip ins that meant something, near misses on holes in one, especially good drives. Dunno. It would be easier to come up with the worst shot I've ever hit.

1. Hole-in-one when I was, eh, 16. The 16th on the course I've played the most: a 145-160 par 3 with a very difficult sloping green. Yardage varies quite a bit due to swirling winds. I can't even remember what I hit; was either a 6 or 7 iron. I was playing with another kid, and had the guy hitting on the tee in front of us verify so they'd believe me. Small town, so you got your name in the paper for a hole in one.

2. Driving a par 4 at my current home course. It's one where there are a few players who can get there every time, and several who can get within 10-15 yards every time, but I'm usually 20-30 out. Wind was blowing strong at my back, but that happens a lot....I just happened to hit the perfect drive. So perfect, in fact, that I definitely wasn't expecting it, and hit it right in the middle of a group on the green that was playing a practice round for a PGA pro-am. They were really good sports, and had a good time heckling me when I missed my eagle putt (yeah, I know).

3. Tee shot and birdie on the floating green at the Coeur d'alene Resort. It was playing 160 and the wind was blowing hard; the shuttle driver said that few had hit it that day. Hit a beaut, made birdie.

4. A best memory more than best shot: on golf team in high school it was always a pure competition to qualify for the next week's tournament. Team had 15 players, top 5 made varsity, 6-10 made JV. I was always comfortably JV, but towards the end of freshman year I sank a 10-footer on the 9th (played nine) to qualify for my first varsity tournament. I was very excited.

5. Earlier this year I holed out from 135 with an 8 iron, and it was truly a good shot; nice and smooth, played the cross wind, landed it where I want, it rolled like I planned. Mentioning since this the question is best shots....it was NOT my best hole, as the hole out was for par, heh. Drive was behind some trees, over punched to heavy heavy weeds, hacked out, then the one good shot.

It's hard to come up with the top five, I have a feeling there are some better ones I've forgotten about.

1. Holing a 7 iron for an albatross.

2. Holing an 8 iron for a hole in one in a tournament. Was paired with someone I worked with at the time who had an odd sense of humor. We couldn't see it go in because the pin was over a bunker, but there was a guy near the green who raised his hands. My friend turned to me and said, if that went in I'll let you butt **** me. Didn't take him up on the offer.

3. Hitting a thin, low, kind of slicing shot with a 7 iron that his and rolling about 30 yards and ended up 3 feet away and I made my first ever birdie.

4. Holing a full SW from the fairway for a bogey in a high school sub-district tournament after getting screwed up in some palmettos. Thought I was going to make a 20 and really needed that at the time.

5. Hitting a PW out of the rough through a 3 foot gap high in a stand of trees and onto the green.

probably not the best, but the ones i still remember (in no particular order):

- 180 yard par three, stone cold top the tee shot to the next tee box, second shot is a one hop jar off the deck for birdie from 165.
- Par 4, 185 left, 5 iron approach lands on the right side of the green and rolls on a downslope all the way across the green for my first eagle. we could hear the ball hit the pin from where we were, so it must have been moving. my first eagle
- Par 5, 245 left, tried to play a 3w cut through the chute with a lot of run at the end and actually pulled it off. made the 5 footer for my first eagle on a par 5.
- Bandon Dunes 12th playing 155ish into a bit of wind, pin is up. hit a great 8i that bounces twice, rolls for a bit, and curls behind the hole stopping about a foot away.
- Bandon Dunes 12th playing 155ish into a bit of wind, pin is up. this is one year later and on the tee box i'm telling the guys about how similar this is to my shot from last year (understanding this is probably the kiss of doom). same club, two bounces, the ball rolls for a few feet and lips out, stopping 2 inches away. still haven't had a hole in one.
