Sick brags: hit a 261y 3 iron off the tee on Saturday, landed on a downslope but probably carried 230y. It's my accuracy and short game/putting that costs me rather than average strike so I'm not sure really. Would hybrid be more accurate than 3i? Would a 5w give me more utility? I would loathe to get rid of GW too as my SW carries about 110 and PW 135-140. Big gap there. I'm only getting back into golf after a long long break so tbh I'll see how it goes for a while first before experimenting too much. Way too much improvement out there with some basic easily practiced stuff.
most non-competitive players (including me) aren't striving for minimum score, even if we aren't self-aware of that. we play for minimum score subject to personal enjoyment.

i love the feel of a nicely hit long iron and even fairway wood. i don't enjoy the feel of a nicely hit hybrid.

When I was fit, he fit me for a 5W. I asked if he considered a hybrid for he and he said no way because my spin rate is already very high.

Some people like spending money on new clubs every year and trying their own thing, but I'd highly recommend getting a fitting.

just don't get fit by using trackman indoors.

How come? Are you suggesting not by trackman at all, or trackman outdoors?

trackman estimates spin and in an indoor setting, it has much less data available to perform that estimate.

i don't nerd out on the numbers like some of our sim guys do, but it has been beat up enough that people just accept now that camera based is much better for fitting indoors. GC2 or Quad would be best bet indoors.

I was hitting out onto a range inside essentially an open garage, so the data should have been correct, shouldn't it? And if not correct, I was still able to see the results so that's what really mattered to me. I don't think I'd ever get fit if I was hitting into a screen.... Unless there was no other choice

Got really discouraged last time out 2 weekends ago after not being able to hit anything on the fairway. Didnt play last weekend and kind of losing interest after playing a lot. Hitting good tee shots and adequate short game but barely making contact with the ball from anywhere on the fairway is not fun. Taking my 2nd lesson today and playing tomorrow so hopefully this goes well and at least gets me making contact with the ball. The frustrating part is on the range it's no problem likely because the mat is forgiving but on the course its brutal

Best advice ever given to a new player... Learn to hit the ball well with a swing that is 70% of your full power or less. If you can't do that, you'll never be able to consistently hit the ball well at full power and you will be nothing but frustrated. In fact, if you get decent at making contact at 70%, you can play a full round of golf at 70% and you will score way way way better than you will right now at full power.

Yea I dont even feel like I'm trying to crush the ball or anything. And again on the range it's not a problem at all. It's got to the point where the only way for me to make contact is to just use 9i pw gw with the tiniest backswing as if you're just hitting out from behind a tree back into the fairway

I also make much better contact out of the rough v the fairway

Start a new thread and put up a video. I'm betting that you're swaying and not keeping your center ahead of the ball but without seeing it... No way to know. Are you hitting it thin mostly or fat? Both? Taking a divot at all? Topping it?

You said you were getting a lesson today, so disregard that. You'll get much better info from that than any computer chair pro like me . Just make sure you stress what your main issue is with contact on the fairway.

Meanwhile I shot 25 over today with 9 (nine) 3 putts and 3 OBs. I may be the worst putter on planet earth. 38, 38, 43 putts my last 3 rounds. I am now much much worse since I started practicing it a few weeks ago than when I felt I was terrible with no practice when it was 33-36 putts per round. Getting worse to get better is a thing right?

curious how far your first putts typically are?

Really appreciate that!

He basically told me I got back into all my old habits my previous (first) lesson with him and was able to show me the difference on video. This makes sense because when I cant hit the ball I take the shortest backswing and just do anything to make contact even if it only goes like 70 yards.

I was bending my knees way too far, which is something I naturally want to do because I'm 6'3" and don't trust the club to get there right now, but obviously it's me not the club.

The lesson was a little frustrating because we spent so much time correcting my **** and the mechanics of the swing that I never even go to hitting balls off the fairway which I hoped was the point of the lesson. Very discouraging but the lesson was still productive. Spent the majority of it getting me to shift my weight from my back foot to front foot during back swing to front swing and rotating my body instead of just thrusting my hips back to front. Got better by the end but nowhere close to what it should be. Ended up slowing my swing wayyy down and was making contact fairly consistently off the tee but when he left I hit some off the grass (actual grass not a driving range mat) with little success. Playing tomorrow am so expect to be fully frustrated by like the 5th hole again. At least I've been driving and chipping/putting pretty good.

Google recommend an article from golf magazine about Sam Snead. It was awfully entertaining and I'd like to read more about him and his life. Can anybody recommend some good books?

I'm going to pick up, "golf begins at 40" tomorrow. It sounds like a fun read.

Massive range, but generally somewhere around 20-30 foot if it's a GIR. Average closer if not (which is most holes). I bought a new putter. Hopefully gives me some confidence. Also waiting to get my handicap now, expecting somewhere between 18-20 to start.

I also picked up, "Ben Hogan an American Life" by James Dodson and "Golf course designs" by Tom Fazio. I was planning on going to college for golf course design originally. Heck, I'd still love to get into it, but as I'm also reading "Golf begins at 40" it's probably too late 😅

I'm doing such a fine job quoting myself I figured that I might as well continue. The Sam Snead book, golf begins at forty is already pretty outstanding and I've only read two chapters which are extremely short. These 17 pages would probably help everybody, regardless of age.

I'm caddying on the web/Korn Ferry tour this week - no TV

Practice rounds went well - he's not in the pro-am today because he's pretty far down the points list so it's a day off which is good as I don't carry a golf bag for a living and it's a beast of a course. 7,991 yards (at 5,000' elevation) - there is a 773 yard par 5 followed by a 273 yard par-3.

The amount of talent and resources on the web tour is incredible. During the practice rounds I was audible giggling a few times at the lines the guys were taking off of tees and the amount of spin the green-side shots had on them. I told the boss I'd knock off the giggling for Thursday He found it funny. I'll keep his name private in case he'd care that it be known he's using a local caddie.

Oh and he's a DECADE/Ship--this disciple.

Shame Scott doesn't post anymore. I saw him posting some.of his old 2+2 posts on twitter recently. Speaking of golfing forummers is Michael Weaver giving up as a touring pro? He's not listed on Korn Ferry even anymore?

Did an iron fitting at Club Champion today. Looking forward to getting an upgrade from my old Taylormade Rocketbladz Tour to the P790's with Oban shafts. The trackman numbers are set for Denver. Blue is the old 6-iron and purple is the new 6-iron. I was getting a little higher smash factor with the new ones and spin rate in the 5000's instead of the 6000's. I just need to aim a little more right and I'm all set.
