I don't know if they'll ever change, this crap has been going on for years.

Best part about that is Stadler not wanting to get his pants dirty. They didn't call him The Walrus because of his good looks.

Amazing that Ryu went from not speaking Engrish when she won at the Broadmoor to speaking it so well.

This formerly spontaneous pond jump has gotten incredibly lame. Build a special pond area for the occasion, have the player announce who is jumping in with her (which these days includes family and AGENTS), and then finally jump in. Way to ruin a good time.

Man, that was brutal.

Happy for So Yeon but that rule needs to be fixed.

Lexi Thompson was informed that she received a four stroke penalty as she walked off the 12th hole on Sunday at the ANA Inspiration.

An email was received by LPGA officials from a viewer about a possible rules infraction during the third round.

Building a stance!

Such a poor PR move by golf.

What other sport takes phone calls and emails from home viewers? What is the phone number to call? Do you just call the pro shop at the course?

In another way, it's a decent PR move. When was the last time women's golf led the late sportscenter? No controversy, no lead. In this decadent age, the lpga couldn't buy that publicity, even if it's for the wrong reasons.

Good that they got the ruling correct, but unfortunate they haven't figured out a good way to deal with the incorrect scorecard thing.

Are there any players on the pro tours that aren't capable of marking and replacing their ball correctly every damn time without even thinking about it? No.

Was it strange that she marked such a short putt? Yes.

Does it look like the ball may have been resting in a small indent and that she may have deliberately improved the position of the ball? Everyone can decide for themselves.

In any case, I don't feel too bad for her. Lots of people choke. If her form of choking is not being able to mark her ball properly, LOL. But the alternative is much worse for her.

Watched some more of the footage and my sympathy for her has gone from very little to zero. I don't buy for a second that it wasn't intentional. And if it was intentional, the penalty should be DQ.

Also, the difference between golf and "other sports" is that other sports have referees/judges/umpires that make subjective calls that become a part of the score.

In golf, your score is governed by an objective set of rules and the player is responsible for reporting it correctly. Officials can't "call a penalty" on the spot, after the fact, or ever. The penalty strokes were a part of her score under the rules of golf as soon as she failed to replace the ball correctly and putted out. When she signed an incorrect scorecard she added a couple more penalty strokes to her score under the rules of golf.

She's actually incredibly lucky the golf world has turned into a bunch of pansies. She should have been DQed. Though on the other hand I think it's pretty unlikely she would have even moved her ball if the DQ penalty was still on the table.

After watching it more i agree. Theres no way she didnt know what she was doing. Still a total joke how thhey handled it but she clearly wanted it marked in a different spot.

These girls play with each other all the time. They know which ones fudge on the rules and which ones don't. By all the accounts I've heard Lexi plays the game straight up by the rules. To be penalized 4 shots a day after the infraction occurred is ridiculous.

it's really stupid that the officials taking an extra day to alert her cost her 2 more strokes for the scorecard penalty.

disagree completely - imo she was just trying to line the ball up with the logo or whatever her routine is and the difference in placement is miniscule.

Apparently the complaint email came in half way through the final round. There are rumours that someone was laying her heavily on the betting exchange prior to the official announcement.

Why would she chance gaining a tiny advantage (whatever it might be there, no idea...bump between her ball and the hole?) in a spot where she is almost certainly going to be on tv? I don't know how smart she is but she's probably not that dumb.

It's hard to speculate on the reasons without more information. If it's something she makes a habit of doing, maybe she didn't think about the potential consequences of extra scrutiny.

I find it way harder to believe that she'd miss by that much on replacing the ball than that she wouldn't have fully considered and accurately assessed the probability and consequences of being caught.

Whether it was a mistake or not, the penalty belongs on the scorecard. Letting it go would set a terrible precedent. There's already massive incentive to cheat, especially in the majors.

The two strokes for incorrect score card 24 hours after signing for what every person involved in the tournament deemed a correct score card at the time is just insane. I really do not understand how that is a thing.

Any publicity is good publicity?

It seems people are overwhelmingly saying this is bad for golf and the LPGA. I would concur.

I don't see a ratings spike for the LPGA coming out of this. I think it will just turn off more people who just will think the golf is archaic.

i'm thinking this is great for LPGA ratings and lexi's star power.

your argument does give me pause to think i.e. that my attitude is not right - controversy = ratings. but is there a line that shouldn't be crossed?

curious to what people would think if it was proven that lexi was doing minor manipulation of rules. which i think it was.

I don't know. Lexi supposedly moved the ball. I think she isn't getting off scott free.

The LPGA was in the news after the Solheim Cup with that putt not being given.

The ratings will remain low regardless. This just doesn't help perception. Newbies thinking of playing will look at distaste at this entire episode and some will think this isn't the sport for them.
