Are there really players here with +2 etc. Although, my friend who is a PGA pro was given a handicap of +4 if he wanted to play club competitions.

There are a few ex-PGA, ex-Nationwide and ex-minitour players here, so I would think so. I ain't one of them.

Did they tell you in class that 36.4 is the maximum handicap?

I probably need to update mine in my handicap program. FWIW I am a pro and no longer have an official handicap, but I use a stat tracker that uses the same exact calculations as the USGA does. Haven't entered any scores this year, but won my first pro-am with a 66 in the rain and wind. Unfortunately have also shot 81 at another, which is why I teach for a living now vs playing anymore. One of these days when I have time I will try to do a thread about playing for a living (or at least playing full time lol) and going to q-school etc...if anyone is interested.

Nope, I thought the US / EU handicaps were pretty much directly convertible? We've got a max of 54, the default for beginners.

Hi Orca, also in Denmark you will be limited in playing Green Fee rounds with a hdc above 36 (as goes for most of the world AFAIK).

The HDC are in general accepted as directly convertible, but they might be slightly off (not that you have to be concerned about those details).

That's correct, we're not allowed on the course until we're below hdc 36, as well as having passed a series of practical tests and at least 5 guided rounds on the main course. That's only fair & good though, shouldn't be too tough to get below 36 once I get started

When i started 8 years back, we had a 9 hole course of less quality and lenght than the "big one" and this was the beginners practise course.
After a lot of practice the local pro would say if we were suited to try to qualify for the "green card"(acces to big course with a starting hdc of 54)
We should then go 2 rounds on the 9 hole course and shoot what was better than hdc 54 index and pass some Bunker test and shot test and so on.

When passed we had acces to the big course with hdc 54 (limit at that course for home players) and try to get down from that.

"Green Fee" is the fee we pay for playing other courses than our own (that is what it is called in Denmark)

Number7 pretty much explained it. We have to play at least five rounds on the course alongside a pro - these rounds count towards your hcp, although most don't improve their hcp on the first rounds. After having played these rounds, we're allowed on our own home course with hcp54, we cannot play on other courses before we're below - usually - hcp 36.

wow, i can't decide if i fully endorse this system, or find it too restricting. i hate that i wouldn't be able to play anywhere, although at my current HCP it doesn't really affect me. still, it's an interesting idea and certainly promotes better effort from amateurs.

I haven't noticed too much difference in my play, but I think the course I've played a bunch in April is rated wrong. Its def not as long as the scorecard indicates. Its lists at 6300, and I'd say its a good 175-200 yards shorter than that....this would give me a better handicap than I deserve, correct?

the max strokes given in an event in the US is 40.
