that is all the info. what 3 clubs would you bring if you only can bring three?

we can discuss 3 club in general. my friend is bringing driver, pw, and putter. I think it is poor club choice, wondering what ya'll would bring?

Probably something like 4i, 9i, putter for me. 4i is fine off most tees, 9i is fine for short action and around the greens, and putter is, well, a putter.

If you felt comfortable putting with a driver (maybe practice briefly first), then D/5i/PW would be a good set also.

hybrid 3i, putter and either 7 or 8 iron can't decide.

how far do you hit your hybrid or 3 iron?

I'm not even golfing, I was just curious. I don't have a 3 because I left it behind once, no hybrid either.

Having a driver seems really bad to me. The extra 30 or so yards off the tee can't be more useful then a club you can also hit off the deck.

Is having a putter really necessary? I feel like bellying a wedge to give you more options on approach shots/chipping would be more useful.

3w-4i, 6i-8i, some wedge seems to make the most sense to me. It's hard to be more specific without knowing more about the course or player.

And who knows I could be way off as it is.

Put me in the 3/4i + 8/9i + putter camp. The potential number of strokes lost from trying to putt with something other than a putter makes it almost a requirement, imo. Other than that I think you kind of need two different length clubs you can hit off the deck, which pretty much rules out a driver. If you're really good with your driver I think you could justify carrying D/5i/putter, but I don't think it's ideal for most players.

agree totally with spgranger. two clubs for the fairway and i to think putter is necessary. what would be the 2nd best club to putt with, a driver?? thats what i would think but ya, a putter can save a lot of strokes so i think its a must

I'd do driver/7-iron/putter. Gives me the chance to get on in regulation on pretty much every hole since some par 5s are shaped to be extremely hard to get on in 2, and you are in contention to birdie almost every par 4 with this 3-club lineup. 7-iron is practical in a lot of chip angles, as well as also being a good punch-out club if you miss fairways badly. I'd also think if you land in green-side bunkers that u can open the face enough to hit the sand shot onto the green with decent accuracy

feel free to chime in golf-forum trolls.

I forgot to mention that in this format we should theoretically be missing more greens and that in turn should result in more chipping (obviously) but also fewer/shorter putts.

Maybe this is something you guys already considered and are still sold on going putter but I thought I should put that out there.

Excellent point. ^^^

Almost all tourneys I've seen like this are 4-club tho. They basically give you putter and you pick whether ou want driver,7/pw or 3w/5/9 etc etc

This is more interesting for discussion.

For true 3 club it'd have to be 3h pw and putter for me.

And 4 club it's driver 7 pw and putter.

You need your chipper and putter and it's not even close. Most of your shots will be you just slapping an iron up around the green and trying to get up and down.

The other club should be your most efficient long iron you can hit.

I'd use 3i, sand wedge, and putter.

Assuming flat slow muni greens, no putter. Hybrid, 7i, wedge you like most. I'd go gap wedge, but sw is fine if u prefer. Putting hybrid is pretty easy on slow greens. If the greens require a putter, then wedge, putter, 5/6i probably

seems there are some varying views, I can't knock what anyone has said. a putter could certainly not be a requirement the more I think about it, at the same time maybe driver isn't a bad selection either??

Think it depends on the layout of the course. If it were straight away par 4s all day Id bring driver and just bomb it close to the green every hole. If there were doglegs and such I dont see how driver would be a great selection and then its just a long iron (3 or 4) then something to pitch with (8-P) and then a putter.

Course dependant. I just went over the 6200 yarder I've played 100+ rounds on in my head and I'd go DR/56sw/ 7iron.

I only use 56 for everything round the green. I would love to have some skills with less lofted clubs... but I don't. I can belly the 56 and roll it pretty good so I would leave the putter at home and use sw.

I'd have to lay up on one par3, maybe be a club short on a par 4 or two, but thats no big deal.

Obv course dependent but it seems like a leak to have a club you can't use off a deck as well as a putter which you can only use on the green. Just my opinion though. I am fairly tempted to go out and try this for 9 holes though

I'm 99% sure it's mathematically correct to have your putter and chipper as 2 of the 3 clubs.

Playing normally, almost all golfers miss more greens than they hit. If you're limited to 3 clubs, even if they are all irons, you'll be missing all but a few greens.

People are fooling themselves if they think keeping a 7i in the bag will save them a bunch of shots. You'll be missing almost all of the greens anyways, you might as well pick a club that you can tee off with and hit off the deck, like a 3i or 4i.

3 club golf is all about how well you can get the ball near the green in regulation and get up and down. Proximity to the hole in regulation is going to be horrible and birdies will be virtually nonexistent. You need to worry about 3-putt avoidance as well, so putting with anything other than the putter is ******ed.

I think learning how to putt with a hybrid or belly a wedge is the best way to go.

As long as you're not bleeding strokes it would be the nuts.

Count me as a "no putter" vote. Bellying a wedge is pretty easy with some practice and I know for a fact I'm a virtual lock to get around in <36 putts using a 56* wedge on typical greens because I've done bets like this before.

I would take 20* hybrid, 8i, 56* SW.

FWIW it is also easy to putt with a driver.
