Pro tip I should have mentioned earlier about Quintero: there is a speed trap near the Lake Pleasant turnoff when the speed limit drops from 65 to 55.

A few years ago after playing I had my friend drive us back because I'd been drinking. It's not like I was wasted, but that's such a long-ass drive that I didn't see the point in risking it since I had a guy with me who had had maybe one beer, whereas I'd been on my steady drip of Jack Daniel's for a few hours.

Well, we had a guy in the car who was on a tight schedule so the driver got a little bit of a leadfoot and got caught in the speed trap. I felt kinda bad seeing as I probably should have been driving, then again it could have been much worse for me since I'm sure those cops out by the lake are trained to look for impairment. The pig actually seemed bummed that I wasn't driving when we told him it's cuz I'd been drinking, and then proceeded to lecture me for not renewing my tags...even though they didn't even expire until the end of that month.

Anyway, keep an eye out for the speed limit drop and keep it to <10 over.

thanks Tuq, but I don't speed anywhere anytime....

usually have a few beers in me and/or blazed so I basically peg myself at the speed limit, make sure my tags are good and I figure my odds of getting pulled over go down to almost nothing............assuming it's during the daylight hours LOL

FWIW I'll be out there Wednesday (yeah, the day when it will be really f'in cold), but I'm not sure if they've relaxed their cell phone policy or not or whether I'll have to smuggle it in. Unless they've stepped up to a full pat down that shouldn't be too hard since I'll be dressing pretty heavy.

I'll be in skybox 16T, which is presumably code for "16th tee", and will probably be there from around 11AM until 4PM or so - a person I'm going with wants to get out there early. If anyone else is in that skybox send me a PM and maybe we can meet up. There will be some prop betting going on, I'm almost positive of that because it's the main reason I want to go.

Anyway, I played Papago yesterday. The fairways and dormant grass was unmemorable, but two things stuck out: the sand is fluffier than ever - I had a fairly wild round and was probably in 5-6 sand traps and IIRC all but one was a buried lie. Annoying, but I resolve not to complain about bad lies in bunkers considering they are hazards and all.

The main feature of the course was the greens. Holy m'fing god, I have never, ever putted on greens this fast before. Not really unfair except for one hole where they put it right on a crown (I was the only one not to three putt from close range iirc), but just really, really, really fast. We all generally agreed it was fun even if it was humbling and even if it cost each of us several shots.

Myself and a few friends are heading to phoenix for a golf trip the first week of march. We're staying in Glendale, any must play courses in Glendale? Not sure what kind of transportation we'll be using but I imagine we could get to Scottsdale if necessary.

Price range 40-80 dollars?

We're all scratch golfers fwiw.

Thanks.

meeloche, I would check out Trilogy at Vistancia, Raven at Verrado, Quintero (if you can get out there)

^ He said $40-80 though, which in March really limits his options cuz that is one of the peak months.

For West Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide, you may be able to get that rate at Verrado, but really Scottsdale isn't any farther from Glendale than Verrado is. I'd look at Vistal, Aguila, Golf Club of Estrella, Coldwater, 500 Club, and Legends at Arrowhead. I'm sure there's others too (I hear good things about Coyote Lakes but have never played there), but those are the ones somewhat close to Glendale that are worth a look in that price range.

Its not set in stone at that. I could probably talk the others into going to 100-125 but I doubt they'd go much higher than that.

Thanks for the suggestions so far I'll look into those.

Also the head pro at the club I'm a member at mentioned we'd be able to get out as a reciprical at Blackstone Country club in Peoria if we pay a green fee.

Anybody played there?

You can search this thread for "Blackstone", someone highly recommended it. I haven't played but if you have an in via reciprocal and the rate isn't outrageous, it seems like a must-play.

Also, if you talk your guys into one expensive round, I'd recommend the haul out to Quintero. It will be worth it. You can probably get some of the other rounds on the lower end of your range to help offset it. They really want to consider themselves private but are getting raped by the economy so you should be able to get out there. If you are having any trouble let me know cuz they have been allowing Troon pass holders out there so I may be able to make a time for you.

Vistal golf club is garbage right now - do not play there.
Terrible service, terrible condition, packed with terrible golfers.

Quintero is the nuts. Go there if possible.

meloche, I played Quintero like 2 weeks ago...see above pictures and was it absolutely sick. If you can get off at Blackstone for any kind of rate I would highly recommend that as well. The course isn't anything special but for the price you will likely get out it will definitely be worth it. DO IT

cool tyty

How much is Quintero likely gonna be? Whats the best way to try and get a time there, just phone and ask?

I'm not sure, just call the golf shop and see what they can do. It's kind of semi private I believe where you have to be a member of the course or a Troon Golf Pass holder...something along those lines.

Bumping this thread because I am tilting that it's supposed to rain on Saturday. I am M-F full time job grinder so I try to play golf Sat/Sun and of course it's supposed to rain almost all weekend.. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Yeah, pretty happy I have no golf planned for this weekend.

Once we get into April and May I'll start pushing harder for a local 2+2 golf meetup at someplace where we can get a rate, or use the Troon pass to play a decent track once prices drop a bit. Maybe 36 at Whirlwind since the second round is only $10 each, and people who can't stay for the second 18 are free to bail.

tuq I would be down for that, I have some connections at some places around the valley.

I used to work at Orange Tree for 5-6 years during high school and college so I still know a bunch of people that work there. Not the nicest course obv, but a fun little course when it's in good shape and free/cart fee.

I'm 26 years old btw and play golf just about every weekend.

Also pretty pumped up for a golf trip March 5th/6th. I am going up to sedona to play Oak Creek CC and Seven Canyons again, staying at Seven Canyons villa with my buddy who is a member.

I may have posted this before, but back around 2000, we had a back-to-back day trip planned, Oak Creek CC in the morning, Sedona Golf Resort in the afternoon. Well we get up to Oak Creek and they had just punched their greens the day before. This was frustrating given that we weren't informed and had driven up from Phoenix, but they were kind enough to let us out of our time. We were able to get a morning time at Sedona Golf Resort and then drove down and played the recently opened Prescott Lakes that afternoon. What an incredibly lucky break that aeration was because Prescott Lakes is one of the best courses in the state and who knows how much longer it would have been until we discovered it. Of course now it's private which sucks but like many other places aren't doing so hot so maybe it will be semi-private again some day.

I played it again a few months ago. Here are a couple of photos.

Third tee, looking west:

Fifth tee, looking northeast, this is a dramatically downhill par-3, the green is barely visible in the dark below:

heading up tomorrow on a golf trip with my buddies.

we got a 12:30 and 12:40 at Sedona Golf Resort for a cart fee because my buddy knows the director of golf.

Then we head over to Seven Canyons to stay in the villa Saturday night to degen obv and then wake up and play Seven Canyons at 10:30 and 10:40 on Sunday.

Trip should be a whole bunch of winning! I will take pics and post back here.

You won't be dissapointed. I played it years ago and it was spectacular. I thought the layout of the Rim was significantly better than Chapparel Pines for what's it's worth. Take some pics if you can.
