Just saw this - we played Sunrise / Canyon in that order. Not sure if I had seen it in time if I could have influenced the outcome.
Anyway, trip was good. Unlike last year I actually made money, our team won the Ryder Cup style bet on day two, and the weather actually wasn't that hot. Between some cloud cover and mostly morning tee times the weather was fine.
TPC Canyons - greens were punched probably a week prior so were disappointing. They were just like nitBO likes his women - slow and bumpy. I enjoy the course; it's been in the rotation three of the four years which I'm ok with but it's not a must-play.
Badlands (Outlaw / Diablo) - greens were better than TPC. Layout is of course pretty tight and at times goofy, particularly with all the forced layups off the tee on Diablo. I don't know if Diablo is just that much harder than Outlaw or if I just can't play it because both times now I've shot about 8 shots worse on that nine. Our three hole shootout was on Desperado, which appeared to be a lot like Diablo. I get the idea that Outlaw must have been added later because it seems stylistically different. It rained during the afternoon shootout and barely missed getting dumped on a lot harder. Could take or leave this course as well.
Paiute (Wolf) - greens were nice, course was nice. By Paiute standards it wasn't particularly windy, which is to say that it was just "windy". Probably two clubs. The shootout was on the first three holes of Snow Mountain, which looks to be every bit as strong as Wolf. This course is polarizing; some of the guys wanted to play two days out there to experience one of the other courses, others thought it was too windy and want it dropped altogether. I probably think one day is about right but wouldn't mind trying one of the other two courses next year.
Spanish Trail - the course is clearly by a large margin the oldest of the designs, as evidenced by the classic layout, green styling, and type of grass. Sunrise reminds me of a lot of courses in Sun City or other retirement communities, and that's not exactly a complement. Fairways were baked in spots and grass around the greens was a bit dried out as well. Driving range was hitting off of mats (otoh Paiute had amazing range grass). Greens themselves were nice and rolled true. Others seemed to be more complementary of this course than I was. It just felt a bit outdated. Not in a hurry to come back, would rather play Bear's Best or Bali Hai again, which were final day courses the two years prior.
