Heading out with some friends for 2nd weekend of March Madness this year. We're looking to rent a car and play a couple rounds of golf before games start.

Any recommendations for mid-level courses in the area? Prefer greens fees under $100 but as nice a course as you can get for that price. We're staying on the strip but would be fine driving a ways if the golf is worth it.

Chimera has always been in pristine condition when we visit in April. It's also very playable even for hackers with wide open fairways and fairly large greens.

Rhodes Ranch has been similar to Chimera with Chimera being slightly nicer IME.

Payute has 3 18s and we usually head out there for a round or 2 when in vegas. Good food at reasonable prices too.

Yeah they have a Lolopooza deal I do believe 36 holes and lunch. Great deal and some of the best courses for the buck.

Got a schweet deal for hotels and flights down to Laughlin, thinking of heading down in March.

We know what we're getting into with the scene there, it's not Vegas, etc.

But would consider bringing the sticks down. Are there any decent courses in the Laughlin/Bullhead City area that you would recommend? Worth it to bring the clubs to play a couple rounds?

The only golf course in the Laughlin area I've seen before is the one across the street from the Avi Resort. Googling shows it's called the Mojave Resort Golf Club. It's been a few years since I've driven by there, but from what I remember it looked nice from the road and always looked empty.

I know there are a few courses in Bullhead City, but Bullhead City is kind of a meth-head infested craphole. So I would be shocked if they are anything better than your local municipal.

would love to see a TR for this region tho, maybe u can be a pioneer?

There's a guy at my work who goes to Laughlin every spring to play golf, I will ask him where they play. I guess it's crazy cheap to travel and stay there

i love laughlin, but haven't played golf there............ primm/jean/etc. on the highway from LA, just inside the state border, has what looks like a nice golf course on the cali side. not that close to the towns.

i didn't realize wynn reopened....... seems kinda steep fee as they took some of the land and redesigned alot of it........ apparently, they realized that more of their ancilliary revenue related to golfers than they realized i.e. i'm thinking asian whale types... makes sense in some ways. and not in other ways (not great practice facilities etc.)

my bad on primm/jean. they are not that close together.

but primm is on cali border on way to LV..... a few casino hotels. and a nice looking golf course very close, just over border in cali.

there are tons of golf courses within driving distance of laughlin. most look either like cow pasture or condo development courses (i.e. very tight to condos and often built partially as condo marketing lure)... the one mentioned by the ava casino (name?) looks good. and looks like nice one across river in arizona, not too far away........... EDIT, note the large number of golf courses near laughlin are generally south towards needles, california

primm and especially laughlin need better, more aggressive marketing. i loved the vibe of an older strip place like the desert inn. and i hate the whole linq/flamingo/harrahs mega-complex... laughlin looks more consistent with old vegas model....... i guess it's kinda far to drive to LV for the day (every day)

Played both courses in Primm and loved them. Two totally different setups and had a great meal in the club house.

As for Vegas Golf I think it has become like Vegas overall overpriced. Man you cant get on Chimera for under a $100 as a tourist. Golfnow used to be great now you rarely find a good deal.

We did Vegas golf last year and everyone in our group said no more. Frick they charged us parking at the Outlet mall

Anyone have input on Las Vegas National? I found a few comments from 2010-11 in here that seemed positive, but curious if anyone had current comments on the course. Planning a corporate tourney this summer and based on price point and proximity to our hotel this looks like the spot. Is there anywhere else I should be looking at that would be comparable?

vegas has cheap hotel rooms (at least the posted rate).. and then it's just like you get chiseled to death after that. often with things they could easily include in the room rate if they wanted to (don't get me wrong, the room rate would be higher but i think most would welcome the transparency).... and of course, when they need more revenue 3 years from now i bet they hive off internet access from resort fee.

i should ask in main vegas thread, but if i'm willing to walk, is there cheap (or "free") long-term parking remotely near the strip? thx for any answers.

ok, it looks like "no-conditions free parking" is a marketing tool of casinos off-strip (but somewhat nearby)

http://www.travelvegas.com/blog/free...e-vegas-strip/

no idea how old that commentary is. nor do i know if all his legit free parking places are reasonable walk from the strip.

Don't get me wrong I want to stay on the golf topic but my main point is Golf in Vegas is no longer a deal or that great.

We usually stay off the strip. South Point we really like has all the stuff you like and clean and comfortable and free parking. Though they have a $21 resort fee I do believe now and $100 a night is the norm. It used to be $69 Problem is the golf. We always used to play Tuscany as it was a nice layout fair for all the handicaps. We would book most of our golf on Golfnow. Sadly you are hard pressed to get a round under $100 it seems. Less than 5 years ago $69 was the most we paid. We have used other online booking apps but still the same.

So the last 5 years we have done Vegas golf twice and St George, Palm Springs and Phoenix. Those destinations we rented a house and the golf courses were better and cheaper. Our next venture will be Tucson.

We have agreed Vegas will not be on our list of places for a golf vacation. There comes a time were you just price yourself out of the market.

Can you talk about St George's for a bit? Recommendations, courses, etc. It seems the biggest detractor is that it is potentially a little annoying to travel to from Canada.

Our annual boys trip is considering doing that this year.

We rented a gorgeous house there and played the following

The really nice one was Sand Hollow.

We also played Coral Canyon, Sky Mountain (2X), The Ledges and Sunbrook

All the rest were good. We have played Entrada and its gorgeous bur private and Wolf Creek in Mesquite is a must.

Drive from Vegas is Ok about 75-90 minutes

Played Cascata a couple of weeks ago. $300 is a steep price to pay and if I had to say it was worth it or not, I would say negative. Don't get me wrong, it's a great course in really good shape, but not worth it IMO.

One thing they really do well here is the personal touch. It is gated and you have to hit the button on the call box to get in. You drive up to the clubhouse and they take your keys from there. When you first walk in they have complimentary snacks (bananas, muffins, etc). They direct you to the locker room where they have a locker set up with your name on it.

After you check in you go downstairs to meet your forecaddy for the day. My tee time was 7:42am on a Wednesday and I was the only person there. Driving range is good and obv have really nice range balls. Forecaddy is at the range cleaning clubs and throwing you golf balls. Since I was going out as a single it was more like a caddy.

The course reminded me a lot of Wolf Creek, just nicer conditioned. There are number of (fake) waterfalls on the course. I asked the caddy where the water comes from, They pump it up the mountain.

Course had a good variety of holes, drastically uphill and downhill. On a windy day I could imagine the course would be a bear. The 18th hole is a 520y par 5 with a nearly 90* dogleg. Caddy says hit your normal layup to the corner at 250y. Then he game me an angle to cut the corner for another tee shot. Where he pointed was at a palm tree in the distance that seemed like it was in the middle of the desert. I hit the exact shot he called for and when we drove up to the dogleg it was sitting in the middle of the fairway. Had 149y to the pin. Of course from there I pulled a wedge so far right I had a 70 footer for eagle. 3 putts later I am in for par.

Any suggestions for a Par 3 course for my 8 yr old son and I? Staying near Flamingo/Decatur. Ideally with a choice of 9 or 18 holes and affordable club rentals

I do believe the Taylor made Experience center is your best choice

There really aren't many true Par 3s in the Las Vegas area. I can only think of 3: Las Vegas Golf Center (formerly Taylor Made Golf Center), North Las Vegas Par 3 (a dump but easy to play) and Angel Park Cloud Nine (actually 12 holes during the day, 9 at night). The Angel Park course would be what I would recommend. I see families playing there a lot and it's the nicest of the 3.

Angel Park is across the street from the Suncoast Casino on Rampart Blvd.

I have played Angel Park and the TaylorMade ones. I prefer Angel Park but both are fine.

Where would I go for a grass range and preferably a decent short game area as well this week?

Bachelor party planned for middle of June, I was put in charge of finding courses. Rounds ideally $100 and close to where we are staying which is just Southwest of the strip. Can I do better than Bali Hai and Las Vegas National? Also looking at Rhodes Ranch. Thanks.

just saw this for the first time 2nite, so not sure if this helps u now. the only grass driving range I know of locally is at Las Vegas Golf Club. but I mostly play low-end courses...can't speak for pricier public courses.

everyone seems to have fun at Bali Hai so that should be fine....even tho it is a bit pricey for what u get. I mean there are better courses around but not sure if fun vs. serious playing is more important.
