what am i looking for? sort of the old vegas strip "desert inn" type experience. i like the idea of golf, dining, casino, sports betting, pool etc. being tightly packed together and easy to navigate. i don't like the crowdedness, rip-off feeling of the vegas strip. but i will have a car and will go to strip once when i'm there (wherever that is)....

also, are any reasonably quality golf courses within the vegas metro area really really crowded?

thx..... basically looked for relaxed old casino experience.. golf course doesn't need to be on property. also, 2.5 stars minimum. preferably 3 stars.
I love staying off strip. For price the Southpoint is great and if you can get a deal the Red Rock is my fav. Use Golf Now and you will may get some last minute deals.

laughlin would be fine for what you are looking for. they have some older, but bigger casinos there that are all close together and sportsbooks in many of the casinos. and it is cheaper than vegas.

there is a golf course at the avi resort in laughlin. you can walk to it if you stay at avi, it is right across the street and it never looked crowded when I've driven by it in the past. there are probably some other courses nearby in bullhead city, arizona (right across the river from laughlin's main strip) but I have not seen any of them.

mesquite would also be fine although fewer casinos and more spread out and the golf courses there are often crowded from what I've seen.

thanks 702guy (and lozen),

as you probably guessed, i meant are any LV courses not really crowded in the fall/winter/spring? and i pretty much knew the answer before i asked... i assume that there are tons of retired people in LV, including retired military, all of whom love to golf.. add in the whole tourist trade and it gets bad.

can you play golf all winter most years? sorry if i already asked.... not sure about further south but we've had real winters the last 2 years whereas we hadn't had 1 in a long long time.

In Vegas in a week and deciding whether to bring the clubs or not. Gonna be mid 50s with mornings in the low 40s. There is a deal going on where you can play Cascata and Bali High for the same price as Cascata ($299). Always wanted to play Cascata just not sure playing that early with that temp is worth it or not.

oops just saw this...hope u didn't bring your clubs unless u were here over last weekend (rain today and all week they're saying)

the wind this time of year is typically the deal breaker for golf. 40s & 50s is OK here when it is not windy, but that isn't often the case this time of year. it is truly miserable outside here when we get those 48 degree 20+ MPH windy days in the winter/early spring

Just arrived today. Plan is to play Rio Secco (mistakenly thought it was Bali Hai) Wednesday and Cascata Thursday. Wednesday looks OK right now. Thursday absolutely miserable. If I play Wednesday then I am playing in any weather Thursday as it will not cost me anything extra at that point.

But yeah it's miserable out right now.

Rio Secco is definitely a trade-up. Hope the weather clears at least for tomorrow.

not yet, there is still a legal battle going on developers vs. homeowners in that area. course is still closed.

I was able to cancel out of Cascata for tomorrow.

Rio Secco is a fun course for sure. I was green high in 2 on #9. Game Golf says

Driver - 352y
3 wood - 273y

#18 they had the pin in the front that balls funneled to. Mine rolled out to a foot for a tap-in birdie.

Also hit Top Golf on Thursday. Always fun. What's even better is the company picked up the $160 bill.

Just bought a monthly range pass. Should be up and running and playing ok within 2 weeks. Anyone interested in meeting up for a round? Have a couple stipulations.....Green fees have to be under $40 and would prefer to play mon-thursday as i like to avoid the crowds.

Does anybody know what you get for a discount as a diamond member at cascata/rio? And does it work for the double down thingy?

Thanks

I highly doubt you would get any break on the Double Down but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Been in Vegas for about a month, and plan on being here at least another three weeks. Anyone want to play? I'm horrible, but keep pace, rake the bunkers, and repair ball marks. Not looking to pay the outrageous prices for the extrvagant courses. I've played a bunch of courses through Golfnow for no more than $30.

Just got back from Vegas played [LIST][*]Boulder Creek nice shape $45[*]Mountain Falls Pharump First Time Loved the course and clubhouse $36 and $55 two days later[*]Rhodes Ranch Great shape[*]Sienna 30-40 MPH winds cancelled and Golfnow refused refund $69[/LIST

I miss the fact we could not play Badlands drove by it on the way to the Red Rock weird the one fairway was now gravel. You think while the fights going on they would still keep it open

Vegas golf just not like it used to be Deals are hard to find . The drive to Pharump was worth it. We all loved Mountain Falls

One of the guys said no more Vegas golf. May try Tucson

sorry to hear your experience wasn't so good this time.

not sure if you've ever tried some of the other courses that are outside Las Vegas like Mesquite / Coyote Springs / Paiute. worth checking out if you've never tried before.

Played them all but were so pricey this time. The Non Resident rate for us CDN's is just ridiculous and Golf Now and Tee Off Times just didn't have much for deals. Still enjoyed the golf we played as slow as it was

Played Wolf Creek Saturday and Shadow Creek Sunday.

Wolf Creek was visually mesmerizing and definitely worth making the hour+ drive from Vegas to see/play. For me it's a one-and-done experience as wild, desert, target-golf isn't my preferred style of golf.

This time of year the rack rate is $190 and they were hopping on a Saturday morning. In fact with the shorter days they split the tees and send everyone out. Decent clubhouse/restaurant. The range is irons only and then we started on 10 and it's a big uphill tee shot with like 220+ carry or something.

Conditions were good; very lush. Greens were okay, they get a lot of play so they had a lot of marks and weren't the most consistent with regard to speed. But overall a fine course and certainly spectacular to look at.

Shadow Creek is as amazing, and ridiculous, as its reputation. We got picked up from Aria at 7am in a limo; it's true they don't have a parking lot for guests so you need to be picked up and dropped off. The road from the front gate winds through the property but except for the par-3 5th hole you don't see any of the course as you drive up. Just a bunch of pine trees and other bushes they are totally foreign.

When the limo pulls up to the clubhouse a host and your caddie for the day is waiting to unload bags etc. and make the introduction show you where to go. They take you inside and point you toward the restaurant (seemingly all the food and booze you want is included; outside of pro shop stuff we weren't charged additional for anything all day), pro shop and locker room. The locker room doesn't knock your socks off; it's very nice, and it's huge with big lockers with a ton of famous golfer and celebrity names on them.

After checking in and looking at some stuff at the pro shop we put on our shoes and headed to the range to warm up. We teed off around 8:30 and couldn't have had a better weather day. About 65 to start, warming to 75; not a cloud in the sky and you never more than a breathe of wind.

The course is tough; there is room to spray it around but it will require a chip or punch out if you're way out of position and there is a lot of water on the course, too. Greens were pretty severe; lots of break and undulation. They were fast, but not out of control and they were very smooth and pure.

The rough was thick, not crazy long but I had a few that sat down and were tough to advance. The routing is very cool; each hole really is separate from every other hole. Lots of variety in hole length, shape and design. Really cool and fun experience; definitely worth doing as a bucket-list day and I'm going to try to make it something I do every couple of years.

Highlight for me was holes 10 and 11. I hit it in a fairway bunker on 10 and caught my approach heavy and had a wedge left in, but got it up and down hitting it inside a foot. Then 11 is a short par-4 265 to the flag yesterday and my drive ended up in the front bunker; it's about 8 feet deep and I was kind of short sided - could only see the top of the flag but I splashed it well and it went in for the 2. I couldn't see it but it's always good when the caddie and playing partners start going wild.

And our caddie, John, was great. With 3 of us (two carts, then) he had to work hard to help us find balls, get yardages, read putts, etc. but he made it look easy and kept us moving but never rushed us. His goal for the day was definitely to make sure we had everything we wanted and had fun.

As we were playing 18 John asked if you're going to stick around and have lunch, etc. or get-going as the cars come from the strip, so if you want to leave immediately they call for your ride in advance. I was driving back to Colorado after and one in our group was flying out late afternoon so we finished up only hung out longer enough to get some stuff in the pro shop and change our shoes, etc.

Amazing experience and certainly not over-hyped. It's a fun, challenging course and the service and attention to detail is unrivaled. I did not have to pay, so I also go to enjoy the experience without swiping my card for $500 - but I'd gladly pony-up based on this experience and can't wait to go back.

Agreed Wolf Creek was on of the nicest courses I have ever played. The back 9 of Entrada in Mesquite with the lava fields was also a spectacular visual.

Just cant justify $500 for a round. How much do you tip a caddy out there?

Yeah the hole time at Wolf Creek you just look around and say how did this place become a golf course.

Caddies at Shadow Creek get $100+ per person per round based on what I was told. As always with caddies depends on the level of service and personal preference, etc.
