The first Tiger fist pump I remember (and probably the putt people are thinking of in this thread) was the putt on the 35th hole against Steve Scott in the 96 US Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge.

Starts at like 3:00 in this video.

Maybe a "Major" should be defined not by its location, or by just saying so, but who is in the field. If the top, say 75, rated players are all competing maybe that should be called a MAJOR, regardless of what event it is.

4 Majors that's it. Amazing now that Tiger cant ship a traditional Major you want to add Majors?

That would mean the Masters, the British, the US Open, the PGA, the WGC events, the Players, and the entire FedEx series (plus probably more). That would be way too many majors. Plus, you wouldn't be able to compare across eras (the WGC and the FedEx series didn't exist in Jack's time).

The WGCs are majors. So the true count is:

TiGOAT: 35 (14/18/3)
JackWOAT: 20 (18/ZERO/2)

Dude didn't even win a WGC - what a HACK. Jack the Hack. Got a nice rang to it.

So you basically saying there is no difference between the majors and the other events you listed as far competition is concerned? Or does calling it a major make it more important?

I can see it now....

Here we are at the 9th major of the year, we've got the strongest field ever assembled in the history of the game. The greens are stimping at 19 and the primary rough is 15 inches deep.

What's this? George Coetzee has withdrawn after a recurrence of herpes? World number 73 is out! This is no longer a major! The entire tournament is for naught!

It's pretty obvious that calling it a major makes it more important.

LOL, Glad everyone caught on to the humor there.
Made my day reading the replies!! Thanks!!!

But seriously, Majors are special events regardless of who is in the field. The US Open would still be a major even if 6 out of the top 10 didn't show up.

That might be the first one you remember, but the one on #17 at TPC against Kuehne was the first one for sure. This is the still frame of it, but they showed the putt during this weekends coverage and it was so over the top fist pumpy.

Or we could just let people analyze for themselves the strength of fields.

If we used that definition then Jack would have like 50 majors because the fields were so incredibly strong back then.

The funny thing is that Jack tried to start counting his senior major wins in his major total. Eventually even he realized how ridiculous that was.

I remember when I was younger I saw my dad watching golf on TV. I said, "Dad, who is the best golfer ever?" He looked at me with that crazy hair of his and said "Jack. Jack Nicklaus is the best golfer ever."

This was 2 weeks ago, and oh did I mention my dad is comedian Michael Richards?

So I guess we are in agreement about what makes a Major, its not who you beat, its where and when you beat them.

Take a minute and go read a golf history book.

But make sure you don't read something published before ~1960 since there probably will be no mention of "majors"

No way, really? If so that is absolutely absurd.
