Whether lightning or COVID-19, the players' safety comes first on the PGA Tour.

A tip of the cap to Commisioner Monahan for having the players' best interest at heart. I bet commissioners from other U.S. sports have been reaching out to Monahan to discuss best practices during these crazy times.

You are just becoming really boring now golfnutt - go find some political thread to vent in.

These people are entertaining us viewers who are in various states of lockdown around the world, whilst they are going about their normal jobs - thanks for giving us a diversion guys!

I see Frittelli tested positive also. On quarantine, out of the field next week.

CROMWELL, Conn. -- Dylan Frittelli became the fourth PGA Tour player to test positive for the coronavirus and had to withdraw from Rocket Mortgage Classic next week in Detroit.

After conducting contact tracing, the tour said its medical advisors are not recommending additional testing at this time.
Thoughts and prayers.

The show must go on though because that’s leadership. We’re not going to let a once in a century pandemic keep us away from playing our game in hotspots. Only the weak would play golf in an area that has very little cases.

America #1.

At least so far no one of note has become sick. The tour released a group photo of the last 3 players to test positive.

Good news, golfnutt, this week is Detroit and we are no longer a hotspot. If the tour can stay away from the bars in East Lansing things will be OK.

They should be going to the least populous areas of country and reducing travel. We will watch them on tv. It still is golf.

This weekly attempt at creating a pandemic-free zone for 7 days over thousands of acres in the middle of urban areas across the country is madness.

What a weird thing for the tour to come to your city but you’re forbidden to see them. It really is a top-secret operation.

Lol at flying into Detroit Michigan and playing on July 4th weekend. Just to shoot their tv show. Hanging out there for a week.

Go back to TPC. Finish that tournament. Play courses around there. Take it slow.

Americans aren’t very good at pandemics.

Mods - can you have golfnutt start a separate thread to discuss COVID-19 and the PGA Tour? I feel I speak for many that we are tired of him clogging up this thread with his non-stop COVID-19 posts.

Mods - Can we pretend this COVID-19 doesn’t exist?

Feel free to block me.

I only post when a player gets Covid. Oh, that is every single day.

This is history.

It also is a harbinger for the other sports leagues. What not to do.

I don't think this forum has any active mods. At least in a couple days we'll probably have actual golf to talk about.

Quote:
“While it’s disappointing to receive this news, as I feel healthy, I’m pleased that the new safety protocols we have in place worked this week,” said English. “I fully supported the TOUR’s new rule of not allowing anyone on the tournament grounds until testing negative, as protecting others in the field and everyone affiliated with the tournament and the community should be the No. 1 priority as a result of a positive test. I appreciate the TOUR’s support and I look forward to competing again after I’m fully recovered.”

English is the fifth PGA TOUR player to test positive for Coronavirus since the PGA TOUR’s Return to Golf on June 11.
Hmm, five positives in 18 days, not up to every single day standards.

Including withdrawals we are in double-digits.

PGA Tour must have a seriously slush fund in order to hand out these $100k payola to players that test positive.

Thoughts and prayers being sent to Harriss English.

The NHL has 15 positives and have only started doing small group practices. Not sure why anyone thought the PGA would be doing this without any cases.

How about Mon-Wed discuss whatever you want.
Thursday-Sunday discussion is tournament proper.

Only coronavirus discussion allowed Thur-Sun would be if there is news about it.

I am sick and tired of hearing about it too. Blame the PGA Tour for making it a far bigger situation than was necessary.

Can you also post when those players are completely fine and just chill at home for a couple weeks like literally every athlete in the world who has gotten this so far?

No I mean like every athlete who has gotten this hasnt even come close to death. They've been perfectly fine and recovered.

Or the tests are either wildly inaccurate or Cam Champ recovers like a boss!

Rudy Gobert was the first NBA player to test positive for coronavirus back in March -- and over three months later, the Utah Jazz star says he still hasn’t fully recovered.

Gobert told L’Equipe he hasn’t recovered his sense of smell.
That’s not good.

I think you’re downplaying the serious nature of this virus.

And, perhaps even more importantly, they can (and likely) spread it to older people who do die.

Yeah I don't really think most people are that concerned about young, fit pro athletes dying or having long-term effects from COVID. But does that mean taking steps to protect athletes (and by extension anyone they may come in contact with) are unnecessary?

Simply staying in one location and having players use carts or carry their own bags would have been big improvements (with all due respect to caddies, I think most professional golfers should be able to manage playing their sport temporarily without an on-course helper).

Not to mention, some small but non-zero percentage of young, healthy people do get seriously ill, and some die. And the numbers start going up past age 40. Golf has plenty of players in that age group, unlike many other sports. They are not all 25 year olds.

They tend not to have the issues that the general population has that causes the increase in hospitalizations and deaths, though. Not much obesity among professional golfers and not that many preexisting heart and lung issues given that they are required to walk miles daily.

Sure there are additional things that could be done to reduce risk. But at some point it stops being golf. If the players, caddies and tournament workers are willing to accept a certain level of risk, let them play.
