According to a complaint from the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees, Golf Channel hasn’t done enough in terms of testing to protect some of those crew members from a potential COVID-19 outbreak, even alleging that multiple infections have occurred due to lax standards.
I called this. Nobody cares about the others. Thoughts and prayers and no money.

Well, they made it through the year.

I guess why should they care when the rest of the country doesn’t seem to give a hoot.

This ain’t over. In America or on the tour.

*The Phoenix Open wants fans on site. The Tour should say, ‘No way*

But it’s also why the event should not welcome fans next month. Arizona is suffering like every other place. Only six states reported more COVID deaths in the last seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control. There were 43,332 new cases in Arizona during that period, and more than 9,000 residents have died since the pandemic began. And that’s before the anticipated post-Christmas surge manifests itself. Inviting people to a sporting event in this worsening environment is unwise.

Can we a stats update golfnutt?

I mean, to my knowledge there were a couple dozen positive tests and/or exposures among players and caddies, as a general rule not transmitted during competition AFAIK. No hospitalizations or deaths that I'm aware of among that group though I haven't paid that much attention. Do you have numbers?

How many positives, hospitalizations and deaths among the PGA Tour staff, tournament staff, event volunteers and TV people?

If we're going to wring our collective hands over this we need something to make the public aware that the PGA Tour is out there actively killing people.

It doesn’t matter how many. One is too many. You either do a total lockdown or you don’t. They didn’t. We as a country didn’t come close either.

We still know very little about this virus. Perhaps people that got it will have additional immunity. Or have negative side effects.

End of day, I’ll probably get the vaccine just to get back to a semblance of normal even though I think it is ok to question new medication. You are supposed to be skeptical.

We will see.

*Statement from Augusta National Golf Club:*

Quote:
Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, announced today that the Club intends to limit attendance at the 85th Masters Tournament, scheduled for April 5-11, 2021. The Tournament will be conducted with similar health and safety standards to those previously instituted in November 2020. With these protocols in place, efforts are being made to include a limited number of patrons, provided it can be done safely.

Preemptive thoughts and prayers. You couldn’t pick a worse location to start the season. Buuuuuut, nobody cares.

Los Angeles Times, Jan. 7, 2021: “Without urgent changes in behavior, L.A. County will lose its coronavirus battle, officials say”

Yahoo! News, Jan. 11, 2021: “‘It’s all fallen apart’: [Governor] Newsom scrambles to save California — and his career”

Beyond the headlines, the plight of the most populous state sounds even worse. Last week officials in Los Angeles County warned of a “human disaster.” There were countless stories of hospitals turning ambulances away because of exhausted resources and various government websites continued to reference 0% ICU availability at most medical facilities.

With this somber backdrop, the PGA Tour is poised to play the first of four events in California when the traveling circuit heads to La Quinta, for next week’s American Express.

While the pandemic rages at alarming levels in Los Angeles and much of Southern California, local officials had approved the traditional multi-day pro-am format at the former Bob Hope, but the Tour announced last week they would eliminate the lucrative pro-am portion “due to the current local climate in Riverside County caused by COVID-19, and considering national travel associated with the event.”

I initially read "traveling circuit" as "traveling circus." Seems pretty tone deaf to play in California right now where it's out-of-control.

As I was signed up for the qualifier, I got an email stating the tournament will be rescheduled for late summer. Really only 3 possible dates currently, August 6-8 (highly doubtful IMO as that's the week after the Senior British), September 3-5 sandwiched between Michigan and St. Louis, and October 1-3 the week after Pebble.

Frustrating but understandable they would postpone, but it's really irritating that the PGA Tour seems to be going right ahead with events at Riviera and Torrey Pines to be held before the scheduled Champions Tour event.

What would you have needed to shoot to get in? I would have watched you if you made it.

A friend of mine tried for Hawaii and missed by one shot getting in to the proper. He is trying for San Diego next. Needs to shoot -7 he said. And that’s the second day. Much tougher nowadays.

So sorry to hear this. I know you put a lot into it.

Yes, I am aware and was going to do a thoughts and prayers. I don’t even know how many have tested positive anymore. Nor have I closely followed how the players did after returning to the tour.

I haven’t heard any terrible stories though. I don’t want to say this was much to do about nothing, but it certainly isn’t doom and gloom.

Overall in all sports I am surprised we have not heard of one or two doom and gloom stories.

I see Patrick Reed has been hospitalized with double pneumonia. Doing better based on latest reports. It is natural during a pandemic to suspect it might be Covid, so far I have not seen anything specifically saying this. Of course people can get pneumonia for other reasons. Not sure if he was vaccinated. Regardless it sucks for him, wishing him a quick recovery.

Yeah, I'm no doctor, but my understanding is while we talk about "pneumonia" as a sickness unto itself, it usually evolves from another infection (cold, flu), and "COVID pneumonia" spreads faster, lasts longer, and has the potential for more sever long-term impact.

Guy from my club died last week from COVID pneumonia. He wasn't vaccinated, and caught it from an employee of his who knew he (employee) was positive and still came to work. Mid-50s, not in the best shape but what I'd consider "average." No other health issues before this.
