I actually hit my short irons pretty well for a bad player, its a pretty rare occurrence to shank or miss hit anything lower than my 6 iron (might not always go where I want it to but distance is almost always good).
imo two biggest things which prevent me from breaking 100 consistently are
a) I suck ass off the tee, I've basically abandoned my woods and just hit irons now and while it seems to help a little with my accuracy problem, I'm obviously losing a lot of distance
b) I 3 putt almost every green
Here is how a typical approach goes for me. Hit 9 iron from 150-160, it lands 20-30 yards to the left or right of the green, chip on, 3 putt.
