I have gone the last two years in March. I choose that month because I am out there for work. I always make it as cheap as humanly possible. I never take a caddy and I never even eat on property unless it's a quick lunch between rounds. For dinner I usually go into town and stop at Subway then pick up some chips, soda and breakfast at the grocery store next door.

I guess I would rather squeeze out another round in place of a nice dinner. I am skipping my annual trip this year and hope to get back in 2019. Still trying to convince my lethargic golfing friends to get off their ass and go out there.

resort guest greens fees are $100 from Nov 19th thru Jan with a $50 replay and $125 in Feb with a $65 replay.

My trip this Jan will be
Lodging: $100/night splitting a Chrome Lake Double
Golf: $100 a day
Breakfast: <$15
Lunch: mostly brought food, possibly ~$10-12 for a dog and beer at the turn
Dinner: ~$25-35 at McKees for a sandwich and a beer or two
Drinks: ~$5 for a beer
we bring lots of snacks/beer/booze so there isn't much liquid bought at the resort.

$300/day is easily doable.

just a couple of years ago the room was $85/night and golf was $75.

Got everything drying now for a couple hours until our noon tee time at old Mac.
from what i can see from the NWS forecast it looks like you lost the weather lottery for the next few days. curious to see how bad it actually was.

a couple of years ago a guy in our group aced the 8th hole at the Preserve (the ~65 yard one with the blind tee shot). his first ever and he didn't even get to see it go in. let's just say you don't want to make an ace and pay the bar tab when travelling with a group of 23 other people.

interesting story: our group has had one other ace at Bandon. one of the guys actually broke his 5i at the range before the round, and while standing on the tee at Bandon #2 said he would usually hit his 5i at that distance but had to use his 4i instead. you can guess the rest.

God I love Old Mac, and I totally agree with your comment about Trails. There's no doubt it would be the best course in Portland, but it has similar characteristics as other courses we can play. Old Mac plays unlike anything else around here.

correcting the "* instead of o" hack from yesterday because it's easy with Word. that second pic is great but i'm having trouble placing it...is that the 6th tee?

I really liked old Mac, probably slightly ahead of trails but that may be due to growing up in the pnw and getting to play courses similar to trails (skamania) and nothing really like true links at old Mac. Both were great though.

Teed off at 12:20 on pacific today, only got rained on at the very end, but had huge wind gusts all day.

Highlight was probably me chipping a driver on a 130 yd par 3. Got it pin high.

Played awesome and shot 89, +1 buddy shot 83, it was really really tough with the wind, and we had the non prevailing wind, so all the short holes were down wind and long holes into the wind.

Definitely my favorite, and our group's favorite, of the 3 so far. Incredible course and views.

Some pictures, we barely beat the dark.

Finished our trip off with a 1050 at Bandon dunes. Got really lucky with the weather again, 62 and dry, moderate winds. In total we got rained on for less than 9 holes for the whole trip! And every round was around 60 degrees, so we probably got a top 5% weather stretch for late November.

Shot my best round of the trip with an 82. I just couldn't get up and in enough and 2 putting from just off the green is incredibly difficult. Constantly putting 5-15 feet for par takes its toll. My long game was great, looked like I shoulda been in the 70s every round, but it's so easy to throw away shots around the greens, even as a low hc.

Final rankings are pacific >>> Mac > trails > Bandon.

It was nice to have the easiest course and walk for the final day before a long drive home. I drove the 332 yd par 4 14th today, big high cut down wind. Drove it 376 down wind on pacific yesterday, fun stuff.

Some pictures from our last day:

Great stuff and glad you finally got to make it down there.
I have a hunch if you made the trip five more times you would have three courses ranked in different places...
...and I have no clue which three.

the courses really play differently every trip. Not in drastic ways unless the weather is extreme. the nuances become more apparent the more you play.

the thing I appreciate the most about the first course is it reflects the original vision. such a balls move to carve that place out of a bunch of dunes and gorse in the middle of nowhere on on the oregon coast.

Did I overlook where you’re from? Washington based on your av? Have you played chambers or gamble sands? Any thoughts and comparisons regarding the golf if so?

From sw Washington originally, went to uw in Seattle, now live in Portland.

I haven't played chambers but went there for the US open recently. I can't really say... Trails reminded me of skamania a lot though, but obvious nicer.

If we could all agree on a date a 2+2 Bandon trip would be fun. Just think of the poker games we could have. It could be a very cheap or very, very expensive trip.

My forecast said 50-80% rain every day while I was there and we barely got anything.

I don't know how much you can count on an Oregon coast forecast, but looks amazing, good luck!

I live on the coast 3.5 hrs south so definitely know what you mean. It's sure a hell of a lot better than when we are heading up and the weather says 1/2-3/4 inch of rain and blowing 25-30 Bandon Dunes Trip Report

this is totally the Bandon containment thread...feel free to keep posting.

the first weekend of January 2018 will mark my 9th consecutive year of this particular group trip. i believe the rota is Preserve the day we drive down from Portland (with hijinx on Shorty's afterwards if it's open), Mac, Pac, and Bandon to close.

the grandpa that organizes the trip is old to the point where he only wants one course a day and likes to sleep in a little. we don't question him because he's played >200 rounds a year for the past 50 years and he books the whole thing for us. he's from coos county and we estimate he's played over 250 rounds at the resort since the day it opened (he played on Bandon opening day).
