I stayed at the Lighthouse Cove Inn this past fall the night before my golf/resort stay started and it was perfectly fine and $100 or whatever.

Have stayed at the Red Lion in Coos Bay which was also fine as far as a place to sleep on your way to/from Bandon

one of our group also stayed at the Lighthouse Cove Inn and thought it was perfectly fine. i've also stayed at the Bandon Inn a few times and it was also perfectly fine, although i don't know what their rates are now.

I stayed at the Old Town Inn and it was a perfectly fine motel-style room. I'm the type where if it's not a really nice hotel/location (e.g., on property) I don't really care as long as the room is somewhat clean.

Staying in Eugene isn't a bad plan, but it only screwed me a couple years ago....left in plenty of time, but there was a wreck on Highway 38 on the way out there, about halfway. Once you're that far there really isn't a way to go around. Made it just in time to pay and walk to the first tee.

we showed up on Wed, most of us teed off at noon at the Preserve with ~15mph winds and no wet, but some played Trails and started at 11am. we were off the Preserve for 15 minutes or so, sipping drinks in the restaurant, and the rain and wind decided to team up and pound the folks playing Trails. their last 4 holes were a full rain gear beatdown.

thursday was Sheep. overcast and moody. wind felt like 25mph, but we were chatting with a marshal about the wind and he whipped out a wind gauge that showed us it was only around 15mph. according to him 25mph is when it starts to blow you off your feet when you swing. 15mph is still a two to three club wind unless you pure it.
temps in the mid to high 40s.

friday was Old Mac. actually had to put on the rain gear and gloves for 11 (Road) and 12 (Redan) when a squall came in, but took them off on the next tee. temps probably ended up in the high 40s/low 50s with wind in the low mid-teens when exposed (like hole 3 when you crest the hill and the approach to the elevated green at hole 7) but very low on the sheltered portions of the course.

saturday was OG Bandon, and weather conditions were mentioned above. after this trip OG Bandon is at the top of my ever-changing rankings

Those are some terrific pics! We are going to look into going here at the end of June.

Well, that deescalated quickly. Wife saw that it's walking only, so we won't be going. I guess we'll have to find something else in the area

otter - if there's a medical reason why walking isn't an option they will allow carts on the course. you can't drive it yourself (i think you need to hire a caddie to drive it), but carts are allowed under certain circumstances.
one of the guys in our group has a pulmonary condition that prevents him from walking more than a few holes, but he's made the Bandon trip the past few years with a cart and a caddie.

not knowing your particular situation, i strongly encourage you to keep Bandon as an option. they have done a fantastic job of setting tee boxes for players of all abilities. all five of the 18 hole courses can be played from the blue tees under 4,000 yards.

if carrying your own clubs is the hang up, you can rent trolleys for a few bucks to make it easy.

and the Punch Bowl putting course at Pacific Dunes is a blast for anyone, as is the 13 hole par 3 Preserve next to Bandon Trails.
you can also play Shorty's at the practice center in the afternoon when the flag flies green.

if you have any interest in golf, and find yourself anywhere near Bandon, please give it a shot. it's a special place.

Under 3 months for me before I am there. Decided to tack on three days in Portland in advance of the drive down to Bandon. Looks like Pumpkin Ridge will be happening then.

so you're headed out late april(ish)? the PDX courses show best later in the summer after the ground dries out and the fairways are rolling. iirc Pumpkin has poor drainage and can be a slog fest in the spring if there's been a spell of wet weather.

Pumpkin can really suck in the spring, and even into early summer. It's a mudfest.

Keep me in the loop, I'd be down for a trip into Portland to play (or if you don't mind the hour drive, a round at the coast).

2 months out, time is flying by. Kinda wish I could bottle up my driver swing right now and take it with. Getting much better at knockdown shots as well.

Starting to think this might not happen, unfortunately. I am still holding out hope. When there we are playing Pumpkin one day, just not sure which. Also on the list of things is some none golf exploring/hiking for a day or two. If that doesn't come through I will def let you guys know.

Two week countdown! Arrive Sunday the 17th and play the Preserve.

Then Old Mac/ Bandon
Sheep Ranch/ Preserve
Pacific/ Trails
Bandon/ Pacific

Have only played 3 rounds this year being busy AF with work and really won't get to play or practice much before going but whatever; it will be fun and I think my excitement level will help me push through the fact that I'm not at all in golf shape.

nice KJ.
i hear they'll let you reroute Sheep 1-11 for the same price as playing Preserve. you might consider it if you're already at Sheep and will have played Preserve the day you arrive

3 of the 7 won’t arrive in time for preserve Sunday so I think we’re gonna make a priority to see it all (4 first timers this trip, too). But I am bummed we are only playing sheep once so may try to work in another sheep round on the last day. Sheep > pacific at the end of a long few days I think.

4 days

5/9 - Sheep/Trails
5/10 - Old Mac/ Bandon
5/11 - Preserve/Pacific
5/12 - Trails

Hope to get into town the 8th early enough to either play 18 somewhere or at least get out on Shorty's

Edit: Have not played Sheep Ranch before. Worth getting a caddy or can I figure it out well enough from the yardage book? Not worried about saving shots with a caddy, just where is the next tee and the green.

It’s kinda confusing out on sheep as there are a few interchanges with a few tee boxes in one area. But based on how busy the resort has been and especially sheep I’d guess you’ll be in a group and the collective can figure it out or someone will have a caddie etc. but the next hole arrows in the yardage book will def work

Interested to hear your thoughts on sheep ranch. maybe if you can get an extra round in it’ll be Sheep Ranch. I’ve played 3 rounds now and my opinion changed after each one. All good but it’s so different that it envoked some thoughts

i think you can figure it out yourself. it's the green to tee transitions at the southern edge of the course (7-8-9-10) that can be a bit confusing but looking at the map ahead of time will help.
some nuances:

Hole 3 (par 3) - shared green with 16 out on 5 mile point. long will put you on the 16 portion of the green and the local rule says you pick it up and play from the drop area (i believe with no penalty).
Hole 8 (par 4) - dogleg right, cut the corner as much as the wind will let you. wide open once you get past the bushes on the right.
Hole 14 (par 4) - blind off the tee, and the line for your drive is just off the tree to the left (fairway bends left).

EAL annoys me at times but these are pretty good videos to give a sense of the course.

I like their videos but EAL is definitely an annoying twat.
