True fact no matter where you are in Oregon. Just read a pretty ****ed up story from my neck of the woods: commercial fisherman lets a guy cut some wood on his property while he's fishing. Comes back, and the guy had put a trailer on the back 40 of the property, and was cooking meth. Turns out guy is a informant, and local cops wouldn't do anything about him cooking, and since COVID makes evictions difficult, took forever for the guy to get an eviction decree. As of now, guy hasn't followed it, and is in contempt and still on the property.

Anyway, rural Oregon is great....

Silvies is in Grant County, which is about 300 square miles smaller than Connecticut and over twice the size of Delaware or Rhode Island. Grant County's population was 7,445 as of the 2010 census (0.2% of CT, 0.7% of RI, and 0.8% of DE) . the population density is 1.6 people for every square mile.

it's beautiful country out there, mostly forest service and BLM land, lots of it wilderness area including parts of four national forests. also includes parts of the John Day, which is the fourth longest free flowing river in the US.

Would not have predicted he would win. Any idea where they are going for season 7?

Would make sense for it to be domestic with the inability to really travel internationally. I’d like to see them stick near home and do winter in FL. Texas would be another good option for them.

i've played Old Mac every year since it opened but had to choose between OM and Pacific and i chose Pacific. i have to stick to the group tee times so i can't try to chase two rounds a day in January. i'm sure we'll get out on Shorty's at least once in the evening and goof around 'til the sun goes down.

1/6: Trails/Preserve
1/7: Sheep Ranch
1/8: Pacific
1/9: Bandon
t-minus 2.5 days and counting.

current forecast doesn't look that bad, but of course i won't really know until i ask Shoe each morning

drove down from Portland Wednesday morning with a 1pm time at the Preserve. Wasn't able to get down there early enough to join the few guys that played Trails at 11am, but that's probably a good thing.
We had a 4-5 club wind and it rained constantly almost every hole. Full gore-tex was no match for those conditions, even Shoe gave the day a '1'.

We played skins as a five-some and I won two skins. I think I had five pars, maybe just four. Nobody in the group remembers ever seeing that much standing water on Bandon greens. There were rivers on at least half the holes so we were moving balls around to give ourselves a dry line to the hole. Here's a view of the Bandon 18th green and putting green from the lodge right before sunset when the rain finally calmed down a bit.

Luckily the weather was a bit different Thursday morning before we played the Sheep Ranch. Sunrise at the practice facility:

Spoiler:

I'll give my thoughts on the SR later, but until then here are a couple of beauty shots:

10:20 time at Pacific this morning so I need to get some food and hit a few balls.

I hear there is a driving range at Sheep Ranch now, confirm?

Yes there is a range at S|R but I haven’t seen it so can’t speak to how big it is. Didn’t find out until after I went to the practice center and showed up at the course for our time. You can’t see it from the clubhouse, but it’s down a gravel path north of the clubhouse about 120 yards, or so I heard.

Booked my first group trip. April 2022 as 2022 dates just became available with the new year.

6 people; 3 first timers. Staying at the inn.

Preserve arrival day.
Old Mac/Bandon
Sheep Ranch/Preserve
Pacific/Trails
Bandon/Pacific

Wild to book 16 months out but here we are.

woke up this morning at 6am to the sound of sleet pounding against my windows, of course it wasn't sleet...just a really heavy rain combined with high wind. roll over and pick up my phone to look at the weather radar and it is a really small isolated cell passing over us, appears to be clear after that.

head to the range at 9am and another light squall comes through. just enough to make me pull the coat and pants out of the bag after getting wet for 15 minutes, but once i did it went away in another 15 minutes. take off the gear and head to Pacific for our 10:20.

we had one or two holes early with the wind up around 15 mph and a bit chilly since the clouds were still around, but from around 5 or 6 to sunset the wind sat down and the sun stayed out.

a tale of two nines: played the front 5 or 6 over net, played the back 2 under net after finding my swing (especially the driver) and not three putting for bogey like i did three times on the front.

3 tee

4 tee (one of my top five holes on property)

5 tee (playing 195 today)

i've played Pacific close to 20 times and this is only the second or third time i've played the lower green on 9 and the lower tee on 10. 10 was playing 175 flag

11 in all its glory.

don't let the flag in the pic fool you, it was a light wind from right to left with a sucker pin on the left. i aimed middle, hit a beautiful baby draw that landed right of the pin but the kicked hard left and kept going. this is all that was between my ball and the death bunker on the left. shoved an 7i into the grass three inches behind the ball and made the 12 inch par putt.

14 tee

15 tee

17 tee

once again some after round fun at the Punchbowl. less than an hour after i took this pic every hole was full of at least four people.

it was a very unusual day for this time of year. the little wind we had was from the north (summer wind) and not the usual winter wind from the south. temps later in the day were probably in the low 60s...just an overall extraordinary early January day on the Oregon coast.
@ShoeGolfBandon gave yesterday an 8, and i'm guessing he'll give today a 10.

Awesome photo dump. Interesting about #9; I’ve got 9 rounds at Pac and only played to the upper green once. lol variance.

Trails tomorrow?

KJ, I heard today you can play Sheep Ranch holes 1-11 as a same day re-route for the same price as the Preserve (~$50 this time of year, not sure about April). Since you're playing the Preserve the day you arrive I strongly suggest you try to play the SR 1-11 re-route since you're already at the course and it is a majority of SRs best holes. totally understand if your group would rather play the shorter course and gamble it up, just thought i'd mention it.

Interesting. And we’ve got Preserve on day 3. Will remember that. I may even look into booking it if possible.

it is really odd about the variance on high or low greens on #9. the upper green on 9 is tougher than the lower (if you get your drive in the right spot on each), but the upper tee on 10 is much easer than the lower. it's a great balance between each, and who the hell thinks to have a golf hole with two different permanent options for a green?

the OG tomorrow. don't get to play Trails this trip

having Preserve after SR the same day is the reason I mentioned it. thought it would make sense to play the 1-11 re-route after playing the full SR 18 first round the same morning. i was told about the re-route from someone in our group that has already been here 4x this year but i haven't confirmed it with any actual Bandon staff. i'm guessing he's correct and it's a valid option.

Same for me too. I have probably played Pacific 5 times or so and have never played the upper green.

looks like Shoe only gave Friday a 7.5, possibly because there was some brief showers in the morning for the folks that started at dawn...i suppose the man has been around long enough to know what a 10 truly is this time of year.

he predicted a 9 for those who played yesterday and he wasn't that far off.

coldest morning so far. the car said 37 on the way to the practice center before sunrise but there was zero wind so it wasn't that bad. just put on both gloves for the first couple dozen swings until the finger circulation got going and the bees went away.

started at 8:10 on Bandon and the sun wasn't quite out for the first couple of holes, then the clouds passed for the drive on 3. the wind picked up after sunrise but wasn't much more than 10mph from the E to start and swung around later in the round to the SSE.

looking back down 1 fairway from the green

3 tee

only posting this scuzzy pic of 5 because i birdied it for the first time ever
that's a damn hard hole

12. sadly did not recreate my previous two 'closest to an ace i've ever been' experiences. bogey

15. it struck me how much they've tamed this hole over the years. the bunker short right has had it's upper third filled in, and the mound left of the green has been shaved down and seeded to give you a chance if you pull your tee shot.
was playing 175 uphill to a forward pin yesterday with wind helping right to left.

the infamous 16. wind into us from left to right, guy in our group somehow stops his drive 3 yards from the devil's ******* greenside bunker.

+3 net with a birdie and five pars. really had to scrape it around and make putts to even get that score, but sure the hell had fun doing it.

Nice. Twelve on BD is feast for famine for me too. I’ve had two kick-in birdies and more than a few tap in bogies.

Nice birdie on 5. I find myself too far right too often.

Sounds like a solid trip.

Just booked May 2022. 3 nights and 7 rounds. Doubled up on Sheep Ranch and Trails. Was originally gonna do this May 2021 but postponed a year. Wife and myself are gonna do a 2-3 week driving trip.

Edit: Still hope to get out there in August this year on the tail end of a work trip.
