Currently I carry 14 clubs. I'm debating on dropping my 3 iron (its from my old iron set and I only use it if I'm under a tree and need to keep it low, can use my 5 in the same spot just fine) and getting another lob wedge.

Currently I have a
Pitching -not sure the degree as its not marked, but i'm thinking its 45 degree. I hit it about 135 yards
Gap - marked 49 (from same set as the P)- 125 yards
Sand - 55 - (same set as the P and G) - 105 yards
And Lob - 60. - 75 Yards

I do a good amount of approach shots w/ the gap as its my best approach club and I try to line it up. However I have been finding a few shots a round I'll be 80-90 yards away and will hit a 3/4 sand wedge. I'm debating getting a 58 degree to help fill that gap so I take a full swing.

My question to 2+2, is it worth it to carry 4 wedges? Does that 2 degrees even matter much? I've never hit a 58 degree and am assuming it'd be about 90 yards.

Thanks

Your issue is the odd gap between your 55 and 60.

For example, here are my numbers:

45 - 135
50 - 120
55 - 105
60 - 90

5 degrees difference and 15 yards between all wedges. Our numbers are similar except for your 60. How can you hit the 55 30 yards farther than your 60? That makes no sense.

If I had to guess, other than some sort of weird club issue, you don’t squeeze the wedges very well and can get away with it except for the higher loft of the 60 where it just rolls up the face and goes nowhere.

So while a 58 may or may not fill the gap, it won’t solve the problem. And if the ball slides up the face with the 58 like the 60, you’ll only hit the 58 about 81 yards.

However, 60 degree wedges aren’t for everybody, if you’re a double digit handicapper, it usually does more harm than good.

Thanks for the reply. I never thought of it like that but it’s probably true, I’m generally swinging easy and getting under the ball with a 60 and not attacking down on the ball like I would with my other irons. I’ll try that next range session.

I’m about 10.3 handi right now, I peaked mid to high 9s for the first time last summer and looking to hit 8 something at some point this summer.

Thanks

Definitely drop the 3 iron, what about replacing it with a hybrid?

Damn, this really hit home and makes perfect sense for me. I was a decent jr and player back in the day. But over the years between work and family I only get a few rounds in a year. I still shoot mid 70's because of my long game but any full swing I take with a wedge goes nowhere compared to my competitive days and longer irons. Will work on this, thanks!

My thought as well. Carrying 5 wedges seems a waste of bag space. I would echo Bo's thoughts too about the gap in your wedge distances. Seems OP needs to tighten those up a bit because that's a huge gap

yeah, the 3 iron is from my old iron set and i only use it when im stuck behind a tree and need to keep it low. I can use my 5 iron for the same shot basically. i already have a hybrid. I carry

driver
3wood
4hybird
3 iron
5
6
7
8
9
p
g
s
60 degree
putter

Yesterday I was hitting the 60 degree more like my gap and attacking the ball and less scooping it, and i did notice a difference. i'll keep working on it to dial it in. Nice call out Bo.

I wouldn't recommend putting an extra wedge in your set. I also would tell you to never make a full swing with a wedge. There really is no need to because you only want to get it straight and not far. You should work on creating a 3/4 swing for your shots inside 150 yards.

To hit wedge shots into the green, I would recommend making these few small adjustments:

Narrow your stance a little,
chock down about an inch on the grip,
start with 70% on your left foot and keep it there throughout the swing,
shorten backswing a little,
use your left side on the downswing,
and then restrict follow through (similar to a knockdown)
You want to try and keep the ball low as possible

This will really get you closer to the pin from 150 and in. As far as your yardage goes, all you have to do is change your backswing length for different yardages. Easiest way to is to use a clock as a reference. On the range take a couple swings back to 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock and see how far they go and practice a little. You'll be surprised at how much straighter and how much more consistent you will get when using this technique. There's no need to make a full swing with a wedge and that's why they are designed different than your irons because they aren't designed with distance in mind.

Hope this helps and GL GL

I love lee trevinos wedge follow through. Its as though hes tucking the club away into his left hip. Which prevents the dreaded flip wedge.

I agree there's no need for full swings with wedges. Right now my yardages and swing path with wedges are inconsistent because of temperature change and winter rust and the lack of real grass range work. I did figure out that I can get 25 shots in for 5 bucks at local fancy course that has a real range for irons only.

Last year in the fall(probably at the top of my game lifetime) even in the declining temps, I was hitting my 54 vokey about 105. Over the winter I added 58 dsv titleist, which is a fun club. My yardages so far on course this year have been pretty short for full swings anyway. So I've been taking lots of 3/4 shots taking an extra club or three. My wedges are decent(weak old grooves but no deformities) but My short irons are a joke right now. Spent too much time on long game over the winter.

I think these are my 50 degree temperature yardages: 58 wedge 3/4 goes about 70 yards but ive improved trajectory and path consistency by hitting a little low draw that stops pretty fast. 54 wedge 3/4 goes about 85 yards. I can get it to go 100 yards but its sloppy. Pitching wedge mizuno mp 30 (hello decade away from the game lolol) goes anywhere from 85 yards with a 5/8 swing or 100 yards with 3/4 swing. Again trying to hit farther is sloppy. 9 iron from 100 to 120(120 is getting closer to full shot). 8 iron powerbuilt Tommy armor cavity back replacement for lost club. Goes between 110 and 130(3/4 or full respectively) then 7 iron down is all mp 30 set, but this is a wedge thread.
