If the rules were written for every single possibility, the book would be 10k pages thick. In this exact situation, it would not affect the outcome. But, let's say Day has a meaningful putt along Oosty's line as it goes by the hole and is stopped by Spieth. That could affect the outcome as Day is robbed of an opportunity to see the line of his putt. That is why the rule is in the book.
So yes, there is a reason for the rule to be there. It was broken. Proper penalty was assessed. Just like there was for Anirban when he practiced from the bunker on Friday. DQ'd from the next hole. Would his actions have affected the outcome of his next hole? Probably not. But the rule was broken and proper penalty was assessed.
