Another needless golf rule. Literally did not affect the outcome of the hole. Even Day was arguing against the speith disqualification from the next hole.

Spieth stopped Oosthuizens ball while it was moving (after having passed the hole). Jason Day had already been given his putt so Oosthuizen couldn't improve once he missed, but the ref ruled it a lost hole for US because of the stoppage.

day was conceded a birdie. louis must've been trying to chip in an eagle, he missed, ball was going way past the hole and while it was in motion spieth just stopped the ball and threw it back to louis (since day was already in for a birdie). the official ruled that spieth was trying to affect the outcome of a swing (or the hole can't remember) and he was disqualified from playing the next hole.

(minusEV much better with words, than I )

If the rules were written for every single possibility, the book would be 10k pages thick. In this exact situation, it would not affect the outcome. But, let's say Day has a meaningful putt along Oosty's line as it goes by the hole and is stopped by Spieth. That could affect the outcome as Day is robbed of an opportunity to see the line of his putt. That is why the rule is in the book.

So yes, there is a reason for the rule to be there. It was broken. Proper penalty was assessed. Just like there was for Anirban when he practiced from the bunker on Friday. DQ'd from the next hole. Would his actions have affected the outcome of his next hole? Probably not. But the rule was broken and proper penalty was assessed.

dont really disagree with any of this tbh (especially the part about writing a rule for every situation being tedius/dumb), just a sucky situation.

Well, if you don't know the rules ...

When "it's clearly not right, but it's the rule" is the best defense one can come up with, it's probably not a good defense.

Pointless rule-mongering isn't doing anyone any favors.

weren't the players ragging on this course before when it hosted a fedex cup event? (one unamed caddie remarked "they ruined a perfectly good landfill" lol). were the changes since then that extensive? or do the players still not love it and the "media" is mum about it?

Yea, sorry it was probably what IWSN said.

I stopped paying attention once it was clear that it was going to be a ridiculous ruling (partly because I had to go on golf forums and do my bit (and by that I obv mean: pointlessly whine)) and didn't pay attention to the penalty and just assumed it would be a loss of the hole.

The jaguars play the jets. I'm sure there are probably tickets available for that one.

I'm being serious here, they should do like Pirates of the Caribbean and make some of these rules more like guidelines. Give officials the permission to apply common sense.
